The Weather is Great!!I can get my boat out of the barn without shoveling a big pile of snow. This is the time to make the repairs, get things tuned up, painted, polished and ready for a full summer on the water.

The same can be said for your Club, The Spring Clean Up is scheduled for April 16th. It’s time to clean up from a long winter, please reserve that morning for a few hours of fun and hard work with your fellow members, so put on your work cloths and bring the tools of your choice. SPRING CLEAN UP

Spring Clean-UpApril 16th 9:00am-12:00

Spring Clean Up, Inside and Out Saturday, April 16, 2016 9:00 a.m. – 12:00ish

Our dues have remained low and we have maintained a classy presence in the neighbor-

hood. We have no grounds crew or army of maids. We do have a talented membership

to whom we look for help every Spring and Fall.

Each member is encouraged to take ownership for and pride in maintaining our facility.

GTYC will provide basic cleaning supplies but we will need:

Leaf Blowers

Wheelbarrows

Rakes

Shovels

Garden Tools.

The job descriptions and sign up sheets will be inside the front entry.

Refreshments will be available.

If you cannot attend this friendly gathering, consider what help you can provide

before the 16th.

The Buildings and Grounds Committee will help you with additional information and

ideas. Contact Dietrich or Annie Floeter 231-929-0888

NEED A BOAT?Angela Schuler

As a new member of the sailing community I have struggled with how to get involved on Wednesday nights. Should I buy a boat and if so which boat? Is it rude to ask if I can sail with someone on Wednesday night or should I wait to be asked? While talking to other members about this I realized that I am not the only member who struggles in this department. So I thought that I would share an interesting option.Great Lakes Sailing Co. has a Boat Club for GTYC members and TACS graduates. Here are the highlights:

• The Boat Club offers seasonal memberships sailing on all new Marlow-Hunter 22’s and a Catalina 250.

• Members can reserve blocks of time and come and go as they please. You don’t have to use it on Wednesday nights.

• For those needing instruction, members are also privy to a 20% discount on ASA 101 as a prep course for the boat club and a 15% discount for further levels of sail training.

• Members are allowed to race GLSC Boat Club boats on

Wednesday nights. Some are equipped with performance packs with retractable sprits, code zeros, and upgraded hardware.

• A special code-zero course will be offered by GLSC for those looking to race.

• GTYC members can also take advantage of discounted beginner-to-advanced ASA sailing courses on boats 22’ to 40’.

Dave at Great Lakes Sailing Co. said that they have a fleet of 23 boats and primarily charter to people from out of town. I joined the boat club late last summer and had a great time sailing without committing to the purchase of a boat. I would still be nervous to sail on Wednesday night, but feel I am a little closer to being able to cross the starting line.

Stop by Suite 185 in the Center Pointe Marina, call (231) 941-0535 or send an email [email protected] for more info on the special discounts offered to GTYC and TACS members.

Added to the Calendar for August

A new sailing event has been added to the club calen-dar for August -- the Junior Hound Dog Regatta! With invitations going out to clubs and community programs throughout the region, the one day event on Thursday, August 4th will also serve as the Lake Michigan Sail Racing Federation Area V youth championship.

With starts offered for 420s, Lasers, Optimists, and But-terflies, the plan is to bring together youth sailors within a two hour radius for some friendly competition on West Grand Traverse Bay. PC Jordan Owen, who is also the LMSRF Vice Commodore for Area V, will serve as the coordinator for the event. Traverse Area Community Sailing has pledged their support and participation.

If you have the afternoon free that Thursday, we hope you'll consider volunteering to help what we hope will become our Junior Annual Regatta!

MISC. RAMBLINGSPC40

A couple of weekends ago Jeff Maier and I went to Chicago for the Advanced Race Management Seminar at Chicago Yacht Club’s Belmont Station. It’s located in Belmont Harbor which is a mile or two North of downtown and is an interesting facility. There are two buildings, both on barges in the harbor. The clubhouse has been there for some time with the smaller Junior Sailing building added recently. The seminar has been redone with a less structured approach, more input from the participants, and no test at the seminar. The test is now online and we had about a month to take it. It’s open book and you have 2 hours to answer 100 questions so it’s relatively easy if you paid attention during the seminar. Both Jeff and I passed and are good to go for another 4 years. In addition to teaching proper race committee procedures the seminar and the study questions leading up to it really force you to learn where everything is in the rulebook.

Our High School Sailing Teams will start on April 4th with dock-in day at the Cornwell Sailing Center on Boardman Lake. If you have a son or daughter or know of any kids in high or middle school that might enjoy sailing bring them down and let them experience the fun that these kids have. With 18 Club 420s now we should have all kids sailing every afternoon. AND a huge THANK YOU to the Boathouse Restaurant and to everyone that attended the High School Sailing Boosters Fundraiser March 2nd. A good time was had by all and it will help the Boosters organize and support the teams as they travel to regattas throughout Michigan, Indiana, and Illinois this Spring and next Fall.

We are hosting 2 regattas this Spring on Boardman Lake that will give you an excellent opportunity to witness small boat sailing up close and personal. The first event, April 22 – 24, is a regional per-qualifier for the Baker and Mallory Championships. The Baker is a team race event while the Mallory is a fleet race. The top 3 teams qualify for the next Baker event and the top 6 move on in the Mallory. The second event is on May 14/15 and is our own Cherryland Team Race. Last year we had teams from all over Michigan and a few from surrounding states as well. Viewing races at our site on the Boardman is awesome. You can almost reach out and touch the

boats.

New at TACS this season will be 10 O’pen Bics. These boats are exciting to sail and will be used in our Adventure Sailing Program. Here are a couple of videos that show how much fun they can be to sail. http://www.sailingscuttlebutt.com/2016/02/05/video-open-bic-world-open-cup-2015/

A few of you may remember Sail Plan. It took place here in TC back in the late 70’s and early 80’s for about 4 years. It was a Spring weekend gathering of racers and cruisers with seminars on a wide range of topics offered all day long for both days. I missed the first year but did get involved after that. One of the seminars I remember taking was led by a guy from the Pontiac area named Derrick Fries who was the Sunfish World Champion several times over. I haven’t seen him since, but his name pops up once in a while and I guess he has a brother that teaches here in TC. A few weeks ago Sailing Scuttlebutt had an article titled First Beat Cheat Sheet by Derrick Fries. Seems that he has logged every start and every weather leg for 47 years and has created an amazing reference database. Great read, enjoy here -

Team PRO has had some intense study sessions recently to get ready for the season finale of Team Trivia. Ask us about KBS at the VI Grill!!! We pulled out another win last month in a tiebreaker w/ Team Liberty and we’re hoping to take the season championship. If you haven’t taken part yet put together a team for April 20th or just sit in with one of the teams and have some fun!!!

I was disappointed that nobody got last month’s Puzzler!!! Oh well. This month’s Puzzler has to do with the above mentioned Derrick Fries. What interesting and very unique fact about him sets him apart from all others??? Hint: it has nothing to do with sailing. Remember – you must answer at the YC Bar on a Wednesday or Friday evening. And if you’re interested I have some great Derrick Fries stories that he told at Sail Plan.

EMPLOYEE NEWSRob Lovell

The Board is pleased to introduce our newest employee, Jordan Owen. You might recognize him as the host of our monthly Crew Trivia Challenge or remember the out-standing job he did last year as the Commodore.

To optimize revenue generation from our new asset, the Board came to the conclusion that it would be best to keep the management and promotion of Bluewater Hall in-house and not hire a potentially less-motivated outside entity to do that for us.

Commodore Cornwell directed the formation of an ad-hoc committee to identify the needs of the Club, devel-op a job description, and address any conflicts and con-

cerns that creating this new position could entail. Seeking professional advice when indicated, the committee and Board have completed their due diligence and unani-mously voted to hire Past Commodore Owen to serve as our club’s first Director of Member Services and General Manager of Bluewater Hall.

Welcome aboard – again – JO! We look forward to the positive results of your efforts!

If you have any questions about the process that lead to this decision, please contact Commodore Bob Cornwell or Rob Lovell, Chair of the ad-hoc committee.
