Summer 2016 PAT SENG | VP/GM NLOP From the GM H ere we are, nearly smack dab in the middle of summer. With more bikes on the road and people out and about on foot, we wanted to share some information about bike and pedestrian safety. I’d also like to share something that I care deeply about – motorcycle safety. I put hundreds of miles on my bike every year and see a lot of carelessness on the part of both vehicle and motorcycle drivers. So I’d like to share a few riding tips for both motorcycles and motorists: Motorcyclists • Wear brighter clothing and gear. • Be aware of drivers’ blind spots. • When you’re ready to stop, tap your brakes to signal your intentions. • Add reflective tape to your bike. Motorists • Stay aware of bikes near you – especially at intersections where most accidents occur. • Allow space between you and motorcycles. • Bikes are out at night, too, so stay alert at all times. Summer 2016

PAT SENG | VP/GM NLOP

From the GM Here we are,

nearly smack dab in the middle of summer.

So I’d like to share a few riding tips for both motorcycles and motorists:

Motorcyclists• Wear brighter clothing and gear.• Be aware of drivers’ blind spots.• When you’re ready to stop, tap your

brakes to signal your intentions.• Add reflective tape to your bike.

Motorists• Stay aware of bikes near you –

especially at intersections where most accidents occur.

• Allow space between you and motorcycles.

• Bikes are out at night, too, so stay alert at all times.

Enjoy the rest of your summer and stay safe! n

Celebrate Summer!

Children long for it. Poets write about it. Pop stars sing about it. Even Olaf, the snowman from the movie “Frozen,” has elaborate plans for what he would do in summer. No matter what you like

doing best, we’re sure you agree, summer in Minnesota is the most fabulous time of the year. In fact, you’re probably well into your summer plans already.

There are art festivals, music festivals, food festivals, parades, county and state fairs, auto shows and community celebrations aplenty. You don’t have to browse long on the Internet – www.fairsandfestivals.net/ states/MN – to discover weekend and even daily events that offer something enjoyable for the whole family.

Here at Normandale, we’ve got a few summer events planned just for you. We also encourage you to take your lunch break outdoors, take a hike to the lake and take in the fresh air and beauty all around you.

How to Protect Your Home While You’re on VacationWhen you’re on vacation, your time away should be as carefree and worry-free as can be. That’s why it’s important to take these special precautions to keep your home and belongings safe from all harm.

Pull the plug on electrical devices like TVs, dehumidifi ers and small appliances to save money and avoid fi re hazards.

Reach out to neighbors to bring in your mail, newspapers and keep an eye out for anything that seems out of place. Choose a trusted neighbor to keep a spare house key in case of an emergency.

Log off of social media while you’re away. Sure it’s fun to post photos of your amazing vacation, but wait until you’re home since you never know who’s watching.

Light up the night by adding timers to two or three lamps around the house that turn on and off at pre-set hours. Motion sensor lights are a great addition to the outside of your house even when you are home. Dark entrances could be an invitation to intruders.

Maintain your yard with the help of a trusted teenager or lawn service – especially if you plan to be gone for more than a week.

Stay connected by phone using smart technology to receive alerts for everything from smoke alarms to security systems. It’s a growing trend that provides great peace of mind.

Lock doors and windows and check them twice. Make sure the garage door is closed as you exit your driveway.

Stop potential leaks by turning off your main water supply in the event of a broken line or water tank.

Travel Safely on Bike or on Foot The rules of the road aren’t limited to motor vehicles alone. The Minnesota Department of Public Safety has published “Rules of the Road and Safety Tips for Bicyclists and Pedestrians” that are important for all of us to know.

For Bicyclists and Motorists• Bicyclists are allowed on all Minnesota roads, except where clearly

marked otherwise.• Bicyclists must ride with traffi c.• Bicyclists must obey the same traffi c signs and signals as motorists.• Bicyclists must signal their turns to indicate their intentions. • Bicyclists must use a headlight and rear refl ectors or a fl ashing light

when riding after dark.• Drivers must stay at least three feet from a bicyclist when passing.• Drivers must maintain safe speeds and be mindful of bicyclists; check

blind spots.• Drivers should use caution and watch for riders when turning corners.• Drivers should open doors carefully when parked on the side of a road.

For Pedestrians and Motorists• Drivers must stop to let pedestrians walk in marked crosswalks and

at intersections without crosswalks or signal lights.• Pedestrians must obey signs and signals at intersections.• Stopped motorists may proceed after pedestrians have crossed the

lane in front of them.• Pedestrians must not enter a crosswalk if an approaching vehicle

cannot stop safely. Stay alert and use caution.• When a motorist has stopped to allow pedestrians to cross, drivers

of other vehicles must not pass the stopped vehicle.Source: Minnesota Department of Public Safety.
