From the Editor… Summer was a little late starting after a cold Spring, however we have certainly paid up for it over the past 5 weeks or so. Hope everyone has enjoyed it so far and we look forward to lots of nice days in August and September.

This is a short summer edition, to bring everyone up to date with the minutes of the last meetings, area representative reports, and notices of upcoming events. Len Stratton, Clarenville Area, has handed the reins to Joe Lowe, who has taken on the

task. Welcome Joe, and many thanks Len for your past contributions.

Enjoy the rest of the Summer and “Be Safe”. As the old song says, “We will see you in September.”

RED CROSS VOLUNTEERS REQUIRED….

(Forwarded by Div. Secretary Alex McInnis.)

The Canadian Red Cross require volunteers to assist in their "Community Transportation" initiative in the St. John's area. A brief description of the duties, as provided by the Red Cross is as follows:

"Volunteers provide clients with drives to and from medical appointments, the grocery store, bank and other essential activities. Shifts are scheduled to match volunteer availability and can vary from 1 to 4 hours. Volunteer shifts are during regular office hours, Monday to Friday between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm. Volunteers will have access to a Red Cross vehicle to provide drives."

It is my understanding a typical assignment would be to drop a client off at the hospital and go back following their appointment to pick them up. To assist in communications with the Red Cross, they will provide you with a cell phone each day you work. Volunteers will be required to fill out an application form which can be obtained from the Canadian Red Cross at 17 Major's Path, St. John's, NL., Ph:758-8404. The Red Cross will mail or e-mail an application to you if you wish.

If you have any questions on this program, please call Kate SMISSAERT, Community Health Coordinator at 758-8404 or Email: [email protected]

May Coffee Meeting:

In addition Cpl. Kelly Lee from the Clarenville Ident Section attended and it was decided we would donate $50.00 to her upcoming Bluenose Run in Halifax, NS, in support of Cancer. It should also be noted that Len Stratton has completed presentations on Elder Abuse, at Trinity, Hillview, Catalina and Clarenville, to approximately 90 individuals. Otherwise the meeting was

fairly quiet with only the local , around town issues debated.

June Coffee Meeting:

The Clarenville Area Vets met for coffee at 1000 hrs, on June 12th at Robins Donuts with the following in attendance: Hansen Dalton, Rupert Baker, Gerald Parsons, Graham Bursey, Len Stratton, Herb Goldsworthy, Al Bert, Elmer Ryzuk, and Joe Lowe.As you can imagine much of the conversation centered around the recent tragedy in Moncton, NB.

(Clarenville Report Cont’d)

The group decided that our local will donate $250.00 to the Moncton Memorial Fund. As well we will make individual donations and assist the Clarenville Detachment with a fund-raiser BBQ, being held at Walmart, Clarenville, on June 14th, 2014.

In addition four vets assisted detachment members in preparing a BBQ on June 7th in support of the local Autism Society Torch Run. The vets have also been asked to prepare a breakfast at the detachment on June 17th, 2014.

It should be noted that Len has completed his two years as the local representative and

the writer has agreed to take the position for the next couple, however at my age many would agree it’s too long a commitment, but I’ll do my best. We agree that Len has done an excellent job and deserves a sincere Thank You!

We will be taking the summer months off and will not meet again until September, unless some unusual circumstances arise. Hopefully we will get some decent weather so we can all have an enjoyable and safe summer.

Joe Lowe, Clarenville Area Rep.

Grand Falls District (by Artie Daye, District Rep.)

Our summer out this way started off slowly, with lots of rain and cold weather. However things have improved over the last while and I am back on the golf course. Not playing much better, but am enjoying it more.

During Police Week, S/Sgt. Les Brushett, invited area Mayors to a Breakfast at the Detachment on the l5th. The Vets were also invited and aided in setting up the tables etc. We also helped Chef Marsha, with getting the meal ready. Eight Mayors showed up and we enjoyed a great breakfast and lots of chatter with our guests. Vets in attendance were, Gerry White, Joe Young, Tom Shea, Dave Nichols, Lou Stuckless, Jeff Milner, Harold Nippard, Rod Taylor, GFW Police Dept., and Artie Daye.

On the 29th. May the Vets were invited to attend the Annual Memorial Service at the Memorial United Church, by the members

of the Legion. This invitation has been extended for the past several years. Veterans attending were Lloyd Goodyear, Lou Stuckless and Artie Daye. This Service is in honor of those from this area who lost their lives during past Wars. At 2:00 P.M. there was a parade from the Armouriies to the War Memorial, where wreathes were placed in memory of those who gave their all. Wreathes were laid by various organizations and individuals. Due to a shortage of man power with other parades in the area, I laid a Wreath on behalf of the RCMP.

On the l7th. of June the Vets held a Breakfast at the local A & W. We do this as there is less work involved in setting up and you can order your own breakfast and have it in minutes. This proved quite successful.

Eight Vets, Nine Regular Members,

Rod Taylor of the GFW Dept. and a relative showed. The relative was Howard Dornan's son, Dr. John Dornan of St. John, N.B. was down for a visit with his Dad.

On a sadder note, 3rd. of June, we received word from Vet. Lloyd Goodyear that his daughter Sharon Irene Skinner

(GOODYEAR) had passed away on Tuesday May 20th, at St. Thomas, Ont. She was 64 years of age. Cremation took place, and a celebration of Sharon's life was held at Trinity Anglican Church, St Thomas Ont on Friday the 23rd. May 2014.

That concludes most of our activites since our last report.

Regards,

Artie

Appleton, NL - Peace Park

The above two photos were taken by the Editor during a visit to Appleton, in July. The tree was planted in September of 2002 by RCMP and NL Firefighters to commemorate Peace officers and Fire Fighters lost on Sept. 11, 2001. While the tree does not seem to have grown much, it appears to be healthy. Appleton, has recently mounted the section of steel that was obtained from the World Trade Centre ruins. It is interesting to note that with all the Newfoundland Iron Workers employed on the WTC during construction, it is entirely possible that the section of steel now in Appleton, may well have been bolted in place by a worker from our province.
