The level of focus, intensity, and dedication from our students is where it needs to be to continue to pursue our goals. At the high school, success has been defined as “consistently giving our best effort”, and our students continue to apply that concept to every aspect of their band performance. I am extremely proud of our students and the great work that they have already demonstrated. The 2012 field production, “Once Upon a Rose”, tells a story of love, evil and triumph with compositions from Holdridge, Verdi, Mozart, Debussy, and Shostakovich. Come watch as the WHS Band unveils the story a little more each week . “Once upon a time there lived a beautiful princess who was to wed a handsome prince. The entire kingdom celebrated. All but one… The evil prince who secretly loved the beautiful princess would not allow his beloved to marry another so he disrupted the wedding. Upon giving the beauty a rose, he cast a spell putting the entire kingdom to sleep. He would finally get his wish. If he couldn't have her, no one would. But the prince's love was stronger than the hate of the evil one and his kiss awakened the princess and the kingdom. This allowed the lovers to defeat evil side by side! Finally, to be together forever.” We invite the entire WISD Band Family to join us on our journey as we once again travel down the road to excellence. The first marching contest will be on October 6th in Midlothian. The dates for all of our marching contests are posted online. Just a reminder that the WHS 2012 Marching Show Shirts are available for sale for only $20. This is a terrific way to let everyone know “you’re with the WHS Band” at football games and contests. They will be available at all home foot- ball games so stop by and make sure you’re “in uniform”!

The guard is off to a fantastic start this year and already looking incredible! Roman Montoya and Denise Armstrong have led the guard to a whole new level of sophistication and excellence. With new uniforms, the guard has added more elements

to the marching show including rifles. Tori Popp, class of 2008, has joined the guard staff by helping the students clean and perfect their work. The guard per-formed their first pep rally in many years and received a rousing applause from the student body. They also performed at the Finley Junior High Academic rally on Fri-day, September 21 and entertained the crowd with a great routine to the Michael Jackson classic “Beat It”. The guard staff wants to thank Dawn Langston and Gin-ger Kelly for all of their hard work and tireless efforts coordinating flags, uni-forms & props. They are amazing!!

Seventeen WHS Jazz Band students audi-

tioned for the Region 20 Jazz Band Satur-day, September 15. Ten students

earned a position in one of the two bands. Eight students qualified to tape for the All-State Jazz Band. We are extremely proud of these students and their great accomplish-ment.

Scott Quintana –Trombone, Jerrin Cas-tillo-Drums, Mr. Armstrong & Mr. Cook played a gig at the monthly meeting of the Waxahachie Garden Club on Sep-tember 7th and did a fantastic job swinging the standards.

The jazz band is beginning to prepare for the annual Jazz Café on February 2, 2013. The students are excited and the group is doing extremely well learning classic big band charts. Please come out and show your support on Tuesday, November 13 and Thursday, December 13 for Jazz Band concerts.

Letter from the President…. The beginning of school is a busy time for the Waxahachie Band Boosters. Thanks for all of your help over the summer with the parade, picnic, luau, ice cream social, registration & car wash! As busy as it has been, it is time to crank it up a notch and really get busy! Much of our band’s success over the next several months will depend on you and your willingness to sacrifice your time and energy to help bring it all together! We need lots and lots of volunteers. There is a place for everyone that wants to help so don’t be shy; jump in with both feet and let’s get moving. The Band Boosters are critical in funding the WISD band program with currently 1/2 of the program revenue coming from the boosters. Our band program needs these funds to operate, and it is our job to make sure they have everything they need to be successful. We are continuously working with the school district to increase funding for the Waxahachie Band Program, and we are making progress in that area; however, these things don’t change over night, and, while we continue to work to improve funding from the district side, it is our responsibility to fill the gap. Our students are the best and they deserve the best. One of our greatest resources is you, the band boosters. The tremendous successes of this band program would not be possible without our parents, directors and students all working together to continuously grow and improve the program.

Band Booster Meetings are the first Monday of each month at the WHS Band Hall at 7:00pm . Come be a part of new ideas, exchange of information, and planning of the various activities for this fall marching season. Just remember: Everything we do is for our kids - let’s give them our full support!

- Edward Quintana, WBB President

) Greetings from the Howard Band Hall!

For Beginning Band Parents

We have started our year and every student is beginning to get settled in. Thanks for your patience beginning band parents on getting instruments and supplies to our students. At this time your student should be turning in their practice card every Monday. We are asking for parents to check to see if they have correctly filled out their minutes and recorded them before they

sign on Sunday night. Students will be starting to get playing tests on Fridays. There will be a feedback rubric that will highlight areas for improvement. We will begin our Practice-a-thon fundraiser in the middle of October and will be communicating by letter soon on what that entails.

For Symphonic I and II Parents:

The All-Region section rehearsals have begun, and we have tried to work around any conflicts with other after school activities. Please help your student remember their

rehearsal times. We will also begin 15 minute listenings with students next week. In class we are working on music to perform with the High School Band on Friday, September 28th. Eighth Grade students will rehearse with the WHS band Thursday, September 27th, from 5:30-6:00 pm to learn the halftime routine. We are also planning to perform with all Seventh and Eighth Graders at Howard Pep Rallies and also at the Howard vs. Finley Game on November 6th. There are plenty of opportunities to help the band. If you would like to volunteer please see the directors at Howard or contact the Waxahachie Band Boosters.

Thanks

Greetings from the Finley Band Hall!

For Beginning Band Parents:

All our newest band members are starting to settle into our daily routines, and we’re excited about what we’ve accomplished so far! Many of them are showing daily progress on their instruments, and we’d like to ask for your help so they can improve even faster. Encourage your child to find a time every day that they can sit down in a secluded area for 15-30 minutes to

work on the things we’ve covered in class. Also please help them remember to fill out their practice card daily and to get it signed by you on Wednesday nights so they can turn it in for full credit on Thursday. Your band member will be having a playing test every week over something that has been covered in class, so they will need to practice that at home to ensure they perform to the very best of their ability.

For Symphonic and Honors Band Parents:

The All-Region section rehearsals have begun, and we have tried to work around any conflicts with other after school activities, as well as most non-school-related activities. Please help your child remember their rehearsal times. Band members receive a grade for attendance plus 2-4 pass-off grades in each sectional. Eighth graders will be performing with the WHS

Band on Friday, September 28, and will rehearse on Thursday, September 27 at the WHS Band practice field. All 7th and 8th graders will be performing on November 6, at the Howard vs. Finley 8th grade football game at 7:00 pm at Lumpkins Stadium. This is an exciting event that we’ll be doing in conjunction with the Howard Band Program. Speaking of performances, both bands performed at our first pep rally on September 21 and sounded amazing! We got compliments from staff members, parents, and even non-band students!

All Band Members: We are currently in the midst of our Practice-A-Thon fundraiser, which will be ending Friday, September 27. Money from pledges and donations will be due on Friday, October 5. We’re asking that each student raise $80 or more. If every student in the program does this, we will have additional $16,000 to work with this year to help our kids have the best experience we can provide.

There are plenty of opportunities to help the band. We will be having a Fall/Halloween party for our 7th and 8th graders on October 26 and would love to have many of you there to help out. There will also be a Holiday Movie Night for our 6th graders here at Finley in December and are looking for parents to volunteer to help out. The Band Boosters are also in need of volunteers for the concession stands at both the junior high and high school games. If you would like to volunteer please see the directors at Finley or visit www.spiritofwaxahachie.com. Thanks so much for your continued support!
