SNDT Women's University

S.N.D.T. Women's University established in 1916 heralded the beginning of formal

higher education for women in India and South-East Asia. The institution was the

fruition of the founder, Maharshi Dr. Dhondo Keshav Karve's vision for the

empowerment of women. The realization was possible with the financial support

of the philanthropist Sir Vithaldas Thackersey, The headquarters of the University is

at the Churchgate campus in Mumbai and the other two campuses are located at Juhu,

Mumbai and Maharshi Karve Road, Pune.

Founder of the University

Bharat Ratna Maharshi Dhonde Keshav Karke (18th April 1858 – 9th Nov 1962)

was a Humanist, an evangel of emancipation both for Hindu widows and for

womanhood at large. A pioneering figure moved by the magnificent instinct that

upheld the progress of womanhood as the purest and the surest test of the

progress of the civilization, the establishment of Shreemati Nathibai Damodar

Thackersey Indian Women's University was the culmination of an odyssey.

The founding father advocated women's education as instrumental in women's

empowerment by enabling them to be economically independent and to be able

to think for themselves. S.N.D.T Women's University was started in 1916 by

the eminent social reformer Maharshi Professor D. K. Karve with the aim of

educating girls for self-reliance.

SIR VITHALDAS THACKERSEY COLLEGE OF HOME SCIENCE

SIR VITHALDAS THACKERSEY COLLEGE OF HOME SCIENCE – Mumbai, established

in 1959, was the first institution in Mumbai to offer Home Science at a degree level. It is

also the first college of S.N.D.T. Women's University to be granted autonomous status

from the year 1995-96. Being an autonomous college, it is governed by statutory bodies

such as Board of Management, (chaired by the Vice Chancellor of S.N.D.T. Women's

University), Finance Board, Academic Council, Board of Studies of each department,

faculty committee comprising of teaching and non teaching staff and other functional

departments and committees. Sir Vithaldas Thackersey College of Home Science

(Autonomous) SNDT Women's University has been a proud recipient of “A” Grade in rd

the 3 cycle of Re-accreditation of National Assessment and Accreditation Council nd

(NAAC), 22 February, 2014 (2014-2019). The college has also become honored by

University Grants Commission (UGC) as 'College with Potential for Excellence' in

three phases (Phase 1 – 2006-2009 & Phase 2 – 2009-2012); presently phase III (2015-2020).

The munificence of Thackersey made it possible to have a separate college of Home

Science. It started with a modest enrollment of 23 students and a few dedicated teachers

who worked under the guidance of expert home scientist from India and the United

States of America. Under the Technical Co-operation Mission and the Government of

India, the College received equipments for laboratories, books on the subjects, technical

assistance through American experts and foreign training for its Home Science teachers.

In 1967, it was named as Sir Vithaldas Thackersey College of Home Science. Instructions

under the degree program were initially offered in three media – English, Gujarati and

Marathi. However, with the increasing demand and popularity of the academic field of

Home Science, the College switched over entirely to the medium of English in 1975.

With the rapid expansion of the College in the University premises at Churchgate, the

College was shifted in 1977 to the spacious 21 acre campus of the University at Juhu.

The impressive building boasts of large, airy well furnished classrooms, laboratories

equipped with the most modern apparatus / equipments, a modern and sophisticated

computer centre, a good library and a Students” Hostel, the spacious ground of the

campus for sports and other extra-curricular activities.2
