THE DABBAWALA PHENOMENON WORLD BOOK DAY

INTERNATIONAL LABOUR DAY AT ROYAL GLOBAL SCHOOL

On 25th April 2016, Royal Global School ob-served World Book Day with great fervor. At

10am, the entire school put down their pens and be-gan reading in earnest. In order to inculcate a habit of reading and incorporate a comprehensive learn-ing ambience, the Management accompanied by the Teachers have undertaken a Book Reading Initiative wherein students would be provided with twelve books, each of which is to be read over a span of a fortnight. The students would then be encouraged to participate in a variety of tasks that are aimed at

assessing their level of comprehension pertaining to the given book. This exercise would then account as one of the parameters of Formative Assessment of the students. At the end of each book, an activity would be done to assess the students on how much they have read, the story line, group discussions and dramatization of the same. It is hoped that such an initiative would greatly aid in increasing the vocab-ulary of students, enhance their general knowledge and bring about a positive change in every child.

TRAVELS

On 12th April 2016, twelve girls from Gulmohar hostel accompanied by their Matron and Trip

Coordinator, clambered into two SUVs and headed towards the river island of Majuli.Majuli Island, a 450 square kilometers stretch of fer-tile land is situated right in the centre of the Brahma-putra River in Assam. Once a land mass of over 1200 km, the island has now been reduced in great vol-umes mainly due to erosion and constant flooding of the mighty Brahmaputra. The small population of the locals earns their living on scant tourism and tribal weaving of brightly colored fabrics, all produced in-house on very basic looms. The tourists are attracted here to the 15th -16th century old temple structures called “Satras” which have now been accredited a

Heritage status. One of the Satras, the Chamaguri Satra, is renowned for its artistry in mask making. The children visited a small room there, which held a number of different, breathtaking masks depicting Gods, Rakshasas, animals, birds and life sized male and female structures in dancing poses. The chief mask maker and organizer of the religious plays and dances that take place in the Satras during the fes-tive season, educated them in the basic making of the masks and called one of his actor-disciple to give an impromptu performance wearing the masks. The whole session was very enjoyable and educative. It being Bihu eve, the host invited a troupe of Bihu Dancers to entertain who entertained the children with foot tapping numbers and brightly colored at-

tire. On the second day of their trip, the girls decided to trek to the nearby village. Rough terrain, thick foli-age and strange flora and fauna kept them occupied on the two kilometer trek and finally brought them to a village resplendent with an array of bamboo huts, elevated to a height of four to eight feet, depending on the level of the ground and the rising of the river. The girls proceeded to acquaint themselves with the local culture and their lingo and soon joined the vil-lagers on a merrymaking spin. Upon their return to the resort, the guests took in the majestic view of the horizon and watched the sun descend amidst cool zephyrs of serenity.

The next day, the girls geared up for some cycling and exploration of the island. They drove into a village, borrowed some bikes and proceeded on a whirlwind tour of the island. and also into a shop-ping spree of local handloom merchandises. On their way back to the hostel, the children reflect-ed upon their experiences in the fleeting five days they spent in a remote island. They felt privileged to have journeyed to such an unheard of places and come back enriched with so much knowledge, wis-dom and unforgettable experiences. With Nature taking its course, this little island might not survive for long but it has left its indelible memories in these young minds forever.

On 18th May, 2016, the seventh Graders of Royal Global School embarked upon an Educational

Donella Meadows once remarked, “Biodiversity can’t be maintained by protecting a few spe-

cies in a zoo, or by preserving greenbelts or national parks. To function properly, nature needs more room than that. It can maintain without human expense, without zookeepers, park rangers, foresters or gene banks. All it needs is to be left alone.” With such pro-found thoughts, a group of Royalites from Grades VI-IX embarked upon an insightful journey towards the famed sanctuary of the winged creatures - Deep-or Beel. On 17th May, 2016, they attended a carnival organized by WWF to celebrate Bio Diversity Week. The theme of the carnival was “Save Deepor Beel and its Biodiversity”. The venue seemed apt for

such an event since it plays host to a rich gamut of flora and fauna. The carnival focused upon creat-ing awareness about the importance of wetlands as well as sustenance of an appropriate assemblage of rare, vulnerable, endangered and endemic species of plants and animals. Around three hundred children from ten different schools from around the capital city exhibited their keen interest for the same. The children participated in a walking marathon, plant-ed saplings and also presented street plays. Further, they indulged into an interesting interaction with the pride of Assam and Padma Shri Awardee Mr Jadav Payeng, popularly hailed as The Forest Man of India.

construction. They were also made abreast of its sig-nificance as well as with the fact that it is one of the few shrines across the country that edify religious tolerance and welcomes devotees pertaining to all beliefs, castes or creeds. At the heart of the temple premise lay a formidable dew pond where resides turtles of varying ages. This sparked off the chil-dren’s enjoyment further and their spirits were un-abated by the heavy downpour that otherwise played spoilsport.Their next destination was the Pua Mecca Dargah – a hotspot for tourists. Legend has it that a handful of sand( 250 grams to be precise) had been brought from the Holy Land of Mecca and then buried in this spot that instigated the construction of the Dargah. The children were bubbling with excitement as they travelled through winding, steep grounds towards the holy shrine. Once there, they gathered informa-

tion about the implication of this abode of sanctity offered their prayers with great piety. Thus conclud-ed yet another enlightening tour for the Royalites wherein children acquired wisdom amidst fun and revelry.

TREKKING THROUGH NILACHAL HILLS

On 20th May 2016, some nature loving Royalites embarked upon a trekking expedition to Nilachil

Hills. This venture was organized by an NGO called Eco Concept and initiated by Nilutpal Das, President of the organization. The trip was also attended by Profes-sor Dr. Gajen Sharma who is a faculty member of the Department of Botany, Guwahati University. The expe-dition served as an instrument to celebrate International Day for Biological Diversity (IDBD) 2016. The trek commenced with a short briefing about Bio-di-versity and the various topics it adheres to. This was done to sensitize the students with regard to their imme-diate environment. They were then divided into groups

consisting of 3 members. With the requisite ambience being set up, each group was allocated a task of putting up a presentation based on their observations and rele-vant questions that may follow. The excursion concluded with a small prize distribu-tion ceremony wherein the meritorious students were awarded based on their group presentations.A special prize was also given to the ‘Most Active Participant’ and this prestigious title was bagged by one of the Royalites, Prishita Nahata.

TRAVELS

On 28th and 29th May 2016, a medley of Roya-lites embarked on a fascinating trip to Kaziran-

ga National Park in order to explore the beauty and diversity of the earth that nurtures us. This initiative was a collaborative venture between some prominent schools of the city and The Ecological Concept Club to celebrate World Environment Day amidst the lap of Nature. The trip ensued with the theme “Go Wild for Life” and its prime objective was to sensitize stu-dents about the rampant illegal trading that has been flourishing on the fringes of this famed sanctuary for wild animals. On 28th May 2016, the campers set off on their jour-ney in high spirits. Upon arrival, they participated in a highly motivating interactive session with Mrs. Mubina Akhtar, a renowned Nature Conservationist. Post lunch, they were divided into several groups. The task entailed each of these groups to conduct a survey into at least six houses in the nearby villages followed by an impromptu interview of the villag-ers. The students put in their best into this activity and during the course of their interview they not only got an opportunity to get acquainted with the prevailing culture and lifestyle of these natives but

also get an insight of life as it exists within the con-fines of Nature. In the evening, they set off upon an exciting night trail during which time they were thrilled by the myriad sounds and sights one experi-ences inside the forest after sundown. The next morning, they set off upon a trekking ex-pedition at the completion of which each team was asked to prepare a chart based on their involvement and understanding. The trip concluded with a small prize distribution ceremony wherein one of our stu-dents Aratrika Tarafdar was acclaimed the ‘Most Ac-tive Member’ thereby bringing down the curtains on yet another eventful trip.

THE HONEST TOUCH

They say, “Childhood is the best part of one’s life. Well, mine was best maybe because it’s one of the rarest childhood in the world as there are very few people who get to grow up as a child in the premises

of an NGO’s office. My parents are social workers by profession and they run the NGO called “Sadau Asom Gramya Puthibharal Santha (A state level voluntary organization working for the development of rural li-braries). For this purpose, our family had to settle in the quarters of the office itself.Almost every one of us made friends right when we went to school as toddlers. My case wasn’t similar. I got my first taste of friendship neither with my school peers nor the neighborhood kids but with the little ones of the NGO. Unlike my family status, they were technically the children of the working class people and resided in the “Short stay home” (a government initiated shelter home) of the NGO. But when it’s about friendship, you don’t care about things like status and class. Because friendship is really priceless! What-soever, I always thank the Almighty for giving me such wonderful childhood buddies. When I look back at my past, the memories of my beautiful childhood reflect brightly in the core of my heart. This great feeling of happiness is “the honest touch” that they gave me to cherish forever. ‘Honest’ in the sense of its purity. There were no conflicts, no competitions to leave each other behind, no backstabbing. Only pure friendship. It reminds me of a thought provoking story.“One day,” said the PersianPoet Saadi, “I saw a rose bush surrounded by a tuft Of grass.”“What!” I cried. “Does thatvile plant dare to placeitself in the company of Roses?”I was about to tear theGrass away when it meekly addressed me saying,“Spare me! I am not theRose, it is true; but from my perfume, any one canknow that I have at leastlived among roses.”Everyone out there knew about our friendship. Not a single day went without us playing together in the campus of the NGO. If I had to go somewhere, I needed them; even at my eating table I used to fight with Ma to get them so that we could enjoy the food together until we reached the 4th standard when they went to their respective homes. Even now they come to visit me sometimes. I still remember how some people used to oppose my staying with them. The reason behind this is unknown to me till this very day but it never affected our friendship. It is indeed awesome that we were so united at such a tender age.The time spent with them, taught me a big lesson of life. Even as a two and half year old, I came to know about their lifestyle, their way of thinking, their importance in our society. It was not only about my friends but about all those working class people. Growing up with them for eight years of my life has shaped my views about the ‘Kings’ and ‘Commoners’ of the human civilization. Mingling with them may be judged by some as a needless venture, but I believe that it teaches us to communicate with as well as understand the so- called ‘sections’ of society. The best part is, these little things turn out to be the greatest joys for those who value them.In this context, I would like to mention Arundhati Roy’s 2002 Man Booker Prize awarded novel ”The God of Small Things” in which she explained how the small things in life affect us greatly. This is how I spent my childhood and each time I think about those good old days, the following words of Richard Bach mesmerize me, “Can miles truly separate you from friends for if you want to be with some-one you love, aren’t you already there?’….

The Beauty of Friendship

Friendship is a priceless gift,

It cannot be bought or sold;

But its value is far greater,

Than a mountain made of Gold,

For gold is cold and lifeless,

It can neither see nor hear;

And in the time of trouble,

It is powerless to cheer.

It has no ears to listen,

Nor a heart to understand,

It cannot bring you comfort,

Or reach out a helping hand.

My Mom

I think my mom is the best mom. Of course, all children think their mom is the best. Let me de-scribe my mom for you. She is kind of on the short side. She has shoulder length brown hair and eyes that look like blueberries. She’s not very strict and she sings very nicely. She gives me lots of gifts and takes me on trips all over the world. My mom and I have a lot in common. We both like travelling, baking together, reading, spending time outdoors and lots of other things. We also have glasses, spectacles, whatever you want to call them. Overall she’s an awesome mom. She’s my mom and I love her. Kiran E. Caskey

The Reason

The sky was cool and dry,It was easy to hear the nature’s cry,Though wind was sweet and clear,

I had something to try.

Thinking more and more made it lack,A feeling of getting it back,

Lost a time, was the love of mine,Leading me to the same track.

But something has a change,Inside me was a cage,

Where it was locked, a feeling totally blocked,Containing the stories of my past’s page.

Still it was not too late,To open the way to my heart’s gate,

Cause there was still inside, written inbright,The name on my heart’s slate.
