I always enjoy visiting with former students about their “learning experiences” when they were in school. There have been many changes in education since I first started teaching back in 1978. I remember using a manual typewriter and a ditto machine to create worksheets for my students and the only phone we had in our building was a rotary style phone. When the Kathryn School closed in 1990 I was hired by the Marion School District and I have been in this system ever since. I was a teacher/coach here for four years, principal/athletic director for thirteen years, and superintendent for ten years. I believe we have a great school. From the Desk of Mr. Steve Larson, Superintendent…

Dear Parents, Students, Staff, and Patrons,

It is with mixed emotions that I announce my retirement as the Litchville-Marion School Superintendent effective at the end of

this school year. It has been a difficult decision but I believe the time is right for myself and my family. It has been an honor to

work with so many great people over the years including school board members, teachers, and support staff. I truly believe that

these people always had the best interest of our students in mind. Thank you all for being such great co-workers.

The support that our parents and patrons have given our school over the years has been greatly appreciated and I want to thank

you for that. It is the caring people of our district that make our school such a success.

Most of all I want to thank the students of our district for making my career so enjoyable and memorable. Every day was an

adventure and you never knew what might happen next. It was the students themselves who taught me many lessons about life.

Each student had their own individual story to tell…some made me laugh, some brought tears to my eyes, but they always left

me feeling appreciative of my being a part of their lives. I always enjoy visiting with former students about their “learning

experiences” when they were in school.

There have been many changes in education since I first started teaching back in 1978. I remember using a manual typewriter

and a ditto machine to create worksheets for my students and the only phone we had in our building was a rotary style phone.

When the Kathryn School closed in 1990 I was hired by the Marion School District and I have been in this system ever since. I

was a teacher/coach here for four years, principal/athletic director for thirteen years, and superintendent for ten years.

I believe we have a great school. I know my wife and I always felt that our children received an excellent education here.

There have been many changes and improvements in our school system over the years and there will be many more in coming

years I’m sure.

Thanks again and I want to wish the best of luck to the Litchville-Marion School District and everyone involved. Thanks for

the memories!

Sincerely,

Steve Larson, Superintendent

By Miss Naasa: “I was born & raised in Jamestown ND with my two older brothers. While I was in high school I switched schools a few times. I attended Dakota Adventist Academy, Pingree-Buchanan HS and Jamestown High School. During high school I was involved in many activities including: basketball, volleyball, dance, acro-gymnastics, and student council. I graduated from Jamestown High school in 2012 and went on to college at Moorhead State University Minnesota. After two years at MSUM I transferred to Valley City State University, where I am currently working on my bachelor’s degree in Social Science with a concentration in Psychology. I plan on going to graduate school to get my masters in school counseling. My main priority is school right now however I do work as a waitress, cook and bartender at Paradiso Mexican Restaurant in Jamestown. In my free time I mainly watch shows on Netflix, when the weather is nice I like to be outside as much as possible.”

Litchville-Marion Career Fair a HUGE Success Article submitted by

Mrs. April Foth, School and Career Development Counselor at LMHS

The 2017 Litchville-Marion Career Fair, held on Wednesday, January 18th, was a great success! That success would not have been possible without the help of our LMHS students and staff, a number of community members and organizations, the LMHS Career Development Advisory members as well as the many career reps that traveled varying distances to share their careers with our area youth. This year’s fair included 42 careers from 15 career clusters. Students from 8 school districts, as well as our own, participated in the fair, learning about many in-demand careers! This included about 320 students total. Students were encouraged to visit with at least 6 reps, asking each three or more questions. After doing so they could put their name in for the door prize drawings. Students enjoyed hands-on activities which introduced them to a task they might perform in a specific career. One example, students used a spray paint simulator to try their skill as an auto body technician.

Many thank you’s are warranted in making this event a success. First, thank you to all the LMHS students and staff who helped with set up and clean up. Your help, before, during and after the event ensured a smooth and successful career fair! Also, thank you to the following organizations and individuals for your contributions: Wayne & Cindy Formo and the Litchville Community Center for generously allowing us the use of the center’s tables and for transporting them; Vicki Enger who allowed us to borrow a few tables as well; The Knights of Columbus Gaming Fund Organization out of Jamestown for grating us funds to cover costs of the hospitality room and door prizes; Scott Lynch—Hendrickson Farm’s and Job Service, Fargo, for speaking to our LMHS students about career related issues & skills; Dava at The Dickey Café for catering lunch for our career reps; John Deere, Banks in Marion & LaMoure for donating pens. The Bank of North

Dakota, NDSCS for donating bags. The Litchville-Marion Career Development Advisory Council members Kris Piehl, Tyler Lee, Kayla Kale—St. Rose Care Center, LaMoure, Ron Truax—Pioneer Seed, Robert & David Henry and Graci Miller for assisting with phone calls and making bars for the hospitality room. And last, but certainly not least, a huge thank you goes out to all our career representatives for taking time away from work to share their knowledge, experience and passion for their careers with our future workforce. As you can tell, it takes a large number of people and effort to pull off an event such as this and it is my hope I have not forgotten to thank anyone! If you helped with this event in any capacity, please know that your contribution, big or small, is greatly appreciated. The contribution you made to the career exploration of our next generation of workers has left a lasting impact on all our area students!

Tip of the Month: Encourage Job Shadowing Job shadowing is an excellent way for our youth to explore, at a deeper level, the careers they are interested in pursuing. It is more than words on a website… it is an opportunity to learn “in the trenches” so to speak. It could help a student make an informed decision that could save them the cost of time and money that many students spend pursuing a career that is the wrong fit.

As a parent, you have a lot of influence on what your student decides to pursue as they explore the many career options available to them. If you have a student who “knows” what they want to do for a career, encourage them to spend a day (or a ½ day) shadowing someone in that career field. Being on site, seeing what’s happening (not just imagining it) can be a very valuable experience! In fact, a story comes to mind of a young lady who pursued a career as a dentist, not knowing that she would faint at the sight of blood! By the time she learned this, she has spent years and LOTS of money on an education she would not use!! To schedule a job shadow, students need to contact businesses and/or organizations and let them know they are looking for a job shadowing opportunity. Once they find an organization willing to let them come in for a day, they need to schedule a time that works with that organization and the student’s own schedule. Students need to then let the school know and pick up a job shadowing packet, which contains the paperwork necessary for an excused absence. As long as all paperwork is completed as indicated in the packet, the student will not be counted absent for a day spent job shadowing. All juniors are completing a job shadow this year for a grade in History class. This is a collaborative project between Ms. Nelson and myself to encourage and promote the importance of job shadowing experiences. These job shadows will be completed by the end of 3rd quarter. Students in other grades are invited to job shadow as well, in order to further explore their career interests!
