J2, Intelligence / Security: CPT Russ McRee The J2 team is modifying our approach for

J3, Training and Operations: CPT David Trujillo October was very a busy training month as

evidenced by the respective Brigade reports

and Section Chief reports. Such reports will

not be repeated here. November marks the

month where we restart our physical training

(PT) program. Studies clearly demonstrate

that participating in regular physical activity provides many

health benefits. Join us 3 NOV 2018 for PT at 0630 in front of

Building 20B; the program will be led by SFC Keliikoa. While PT

is optional, you are strongly encouraged to attend and partici-

pate to the best of your ability. Over the next few years, WSG

soldiers can expect to go on more emergency/disaster related

deployments so beginning in 2019, you can expect more train-

ing exercises designed to test our ability to deploy individually

or as a unit.

the preservation of peace, order and public safety

under competent orders of State authorities.

The Washington State Guard serves at the direc-

tion of the state’s Adjutant General. It is always

ready to provide trained personnel to support

civil government authority, provide for the pro-

tection and preservation of life or property during

natural or manmade disasters or civil emergen-

cies, and rapidly and effectively respond to

search, rescue, or recovery operations.

Additionally, the members of the Washington

State Guard effectively execute State Homeland

Defense missions and participate as active

members and contributing citizens of our local

communities.

During the end of September, several members from the 1st,

3rd, and 4th Battalions along with Brigade HQ staff participat-

ed in Tracker training (see photos, next page). The course is the

same one that is given to Special Forces, Law Enforcement, and

Federal Agency members. The course involved tracking

through forests, high grass, and wetlands, up mountains into

valleys in all weather conditions. All the Trackers were success-

ful in finding their quarry.

The course directors also mentioned that this was one of the

best classes they had taught in 25 plus years. The course posi-

tions these new Trackers to participate in Search and Rescue

(SAR), and Combat tracking. They are also ready to assist Law

Enforcement if called upon. The members who are now Quali-

fied to wear the approved Tracker patch are: COL Whippo, LTC

WSG SOLDIERS COMPLETE TRACKER TRAINING

See 1st INF BDE report from COL Whippo, previous page. Above: "Spoor Pit" training. On the first day of class students learned about track and sign (aka "Spoor") characteristics of people. This session also covered activity interpretation, such as:

• How many subjects are on the trail?

• Are they carrying heavy objects such as weapons?

• Are they trying to obscure or confuse their signs such as walking backwards?

• Are they carrying an injured colleague?

• How do you tell?

Lock Down Those Passwords!

Submitted by 1LT Isabelle Molamphy

Do you have too many different website credentials and are struggling to remember them? Do you find yourself reusing the same password for different accounts? Do your passwords look like “GoSounders123” or “2018ReignFC? Or, did you cre-ate a document specifically to store all your passwords? If you answered “yes” to any of those questions, please read on as you are a perfect candidate for the use of a password manag-er.

Password managers are user-friendly and allow you to man-age and securely store all your passwords, credit card infor-mation and notes, in an encrypted vault. It is convenient as you can access your vault via apps, browser add-on and the vendor website from your phone or computer.

Since you don’t need to remember your passwords, you can increase the length and complexity of your passwords and take advantage of a feature in most password managers which is the creation of random, complex and long pass-words. What’s not to like about this?

Quite a few vendors offer free subscription and/or trial so don’t hesitate to shop around until you find what best suit your needs.

Price varies from free to about $40.00 per year. Below are two review articles to help you make your decision in choos-ing a password manager.

The Whatcom County Division of Emergency Management hosted the Mount Baker Volcano Eruption Exercise 15-19 OCT. The exercise tested the various agencies in their abilities to respond to a major volcano eruption with a loss of communications, wi-fi and internet.

The Air National Guard, 141st Communications Flight out of Fairchild Air Force Base in Spokane, Washington and the Washington State Guard (WSG) were invited to provide the communication during the comms-down phase.

The United States Geological Service (USGS) started the exercise with a report of detecting a large seismic event at Sherman Crater and an explosive sound at 0230, followed by a plume of ash shooting 15,000 feet into the air. Shortly after, river sensors along the middle fork of the Nooksack River began to go offline, indicating a lahar moving toward Whatcom's riverside communities downstream.

Our Mission was to receive training on setting up and operating the JIISCC and assist the 141st Communications Flight Group.

Team personnel had many positive things to say about our participation and Maj. Charles Parsons, Commander, 141st Communications Flight said that our participation was critical to the success of the exercise and he thought we contributed as much as we benefited. OIC CW4 Goo’s experience in Domestic Operations, leadership skills and friendly demeanor paid dividends toward relationship building with Whatcom County officials. SGT Goo immedi-ately bonded with the team and jumped into operations, and Private Sullivan inspired the team with her positive

On 16 OCT 1LT Chatfield delivered the DPOV “2 Weeks Ready” presentation to approximately 40 members of Bellevue CERT. Chatfield tuned the delivery for a more knowledgeable audi-ence since most CERT members are themselves generally pre-pared to render assistance following a disaster. DPOV stands for Disaster Preparedness Outreach Program, and is a WA Military Department program to promote “2 Weeks Ready” personal and family disaster preparedness.

CERT stands for Community Emergency Response Team. The CERT curriculum is defined by FEMA and delivered and man-aged at the local level. Many WSG soldiers are also CERT quali-fied in their hometowns. In fact CERT members are an excel-lent pool of potential WSG recruits.
