ONLY FACE A VERTICAL STONE STANDING 7 METERS

PONDER THE COMPLEXITY AND MAGIC OF SUCH

MYSTERIES.

CAM LOUIS MENHIR - PLOUESCAT

Megaliths are the work of the first sedentary communities living in the area during the Neolithic period, approximately 5000 BC. Standing stones (“Menhir” in breton) might have been territorial markers, or indicate the edges of a ceremonial space or burial site. Some megalithic tombs, “portal dolmen”, were originally covered by a stone cairn or earth barrow and used as collective tombs.

KOUGN AN DRE MENHIR KOUGN AN DRE MENHIR - PLOUESCAT- PLOUESCATAddress: Créac’h ar Vrenn (towards Saint-Pol-de-Léon)This 3,70-meter-high menhir was registered Historic Monument in 1970.

IRVIT MENHIR IRVIT MENHIR - PLOUESCAT- PLOUESCATAddress: Irvit (Route D330)Registered Historic Monument in 1921, this menhir measures 4 meters high. According to legend, like a clock it strikes time, but only at midnight and midday! Accessible on foot and by bike.

CAM LOUIS MENHIR CAM LOUIS MENHIR - PLOUESCAT- PLOUESCATAddress: Cam-Louis (along the GR34)Almost 7 meters high, this menhir is one of the highest in Brittany, and was registered Hictoric Monument in 1909. Legend says it stands on top of a treasure only accessible on Christmas day or when the clock strikes midnight! Raised on the heathland and bordering the shore, navigators also use it as a marker.

GUINIRVIT PASSAGE GRAVE GUINIRVIT PASSAGE GRAVE - PLOUESCAT- PLOUESCATAddress: Baie du Kernic next to the Kernic campingRegistered Historic Monument in 1960. This passage grave was used as a collective tomb by a family or a clan between the Neolithic period and the Bronze Age. It was once covered by a tumulus (“earth mound”) or a “cairn” (pile of stones). This grave, originally built on the lowland, next to the Kérallé River, is today submerged at high tide and is, therefore, an indicator of sea level rise.

KERGALLEC MENHIR KERGALLEC MENHIR - CLÉDER- CLÉDERThis 3,60-meter-high menhir is located in a field near Kerfissien Port. Legend says that every 99 years, during a full moon, Korrigans (small fairies) sneak out from under the menhir, leaving their treasure behind.

MOUGAU PASSAGE GRAVE - MOUGAU PASSAGE GRAVE - COMMANACOMMANALocation: Northern side of the Monts d’Arrée, Mougau BihanRegistered in 1909, this passage grave, situated close to the Mougau bogland, is one of the most well-preserved graves in the region. This 14-meter-long megalith holds an exceptional diversity of carvings: the Mother Goddess represented with two pair of breasts, polished axes, rowing oars etc. According to the legend, it was named “the Tomb of the Giants”.

KERANGOUEZ DOLMEN KERANGOUEZ DOLMEN SAINT-POL-DE-LÉONSAINT-POL-DE-LÉONThis 5000-year-old dolmen testifies to the presence of an ancient community in the area. Until the 20th century, many other menhirs and dolmens were present in Saint-Pol-de-Léon.

The museum exhibits the Saint-Servais native’s artwork, Yan’Dargent. He was the cantor in his country. True autodidact, he was acknowledged as unique interpreter of Breton culture. His most famous masterpiece “Les Lavandières de la nuit” (“The Night washerwomen”) was noticed by Théophile Gautier in 1861. He also made the Breton legends famous and consequently inspired Walt Disney with some of his artistic creations. More and more visitors guided through the Parish Close also learn about his talent as a painter of the Sacred. Ancient canvas paintings, wall paintings and stained-glasses are also a must-see.

SALTED TASTES… THE KIG HA FARZA traditional dish in our region… One you cannot miss! It literally means “meat” (kig) and “stuffing” (Farz). Authentic local “pot-au-feu” made with buckweat flour and a specific cooking technique blend the flavours beautifully.

Direktverkauf
