From the Acting Principal and Campus Coordinator The Winter Break As the Winter break approaches and we near the mid-way part of the year, let us encourage students to finish the term strongly. That is, giving and trying their best in all aspects of College life. Through their efforts in the classroom, in the playground, on the sporting field, wherever it may be, students are expected to give of their best. ‘Starting strongly’, ‘continuing strongly’ and ‘finishing strongly’ are terms that we enjoy using, as it delivers the message of living life to the fullest, taking advantage of each and every moment, being a life long learner and displaying Christ’s love to others. These are important attributes in anyone’s life. It was a pleasure to witness runners competing at the Combined Independent Schools Cross Country held last week at Eastern Creek Raceway. Josiah Beggs was the College’s first cross country runner to represent NASSA at the carnival and he should be proud of his efforts. All of the competitors gave their all and it was humbling to watch as each runner virtually collapsed over the finishing line after exhausting themselves as they ran. There was not a runner there who did not start, continue or finish strongly. On Tuesday, 18 June the College was visited by two players from the Greater Western Sydney Giants. Kristian Jaksch and Sam Reid spoke to the students about some of their experiences and life as professional AFL footballers. Students and staff alike enjoyed listening to both players. Academic reports for the first half of the year have been completed. Reports and portfolios are being sent home and there will be an opportunity for you to speak to your child’s teacher at the Parent/Teacher Evening on Wednesday, 31 July 2013. As always, if you need to meet with your child’s teacher beforehand, please contact the College. As we enter the Winter vacation period for three weeks, the College staff will be undertaking a 3 day Professional Development program from Wednesday, 17 July to Friday, 19 July at both Thomas Hassall and Oran Park sites. There will be a focus on the new Australian Curriculum, specifically the key learning areas of English. It will be a productive time for staff. In the Classroom with Mrs Finlay and Prep As a parent you are your child’s first teacher. You have seen your child learn many new skills before they started Prep. Your role is valuable and by sharing in the learning your child engages in at school you can enjoy the progress they are making as they begin their formal schooling. Our Writing Centre - What is it and what are children learning? Many of you would have noticed that we have a writing centre set up in our classroom. You may have also been presented with numerous creations from your child and wondered what learning is taking place at this centre. This experience provides children with the opportunity to develop and refine their fine motor skills while learning important literacy skills that will assist in providing them with the necessary abilities to enter Kindergarten. Children can independently choose what they want to do and can come and go as they please. They are provided with a number of open ended resources that can be used to create almost anything they choose. Below are examples of some of the resources provided. Pencils and crayons Assorted papers Scissors Glue Magazines Whiteboards and markers Alphabet charts Rulers and staplers Magnetic letters and alphabet stickers When students participate in this experience they are developing a number of important skills in their literacy development. They include: How to hold a pencil using the correct grip How to trace and write words How to copy letters and words How to form letters of the alphabet correctly How to write using a variety of materials including pencils, crayons, pens and textas How to write on a variety of surfaces such as paper, cardboard, chalkboards and whiteboards Develop good posture for writing Use their creativity to produce different pieces of work

In the Classroom with Mrs Finlay and Prep continued… How Can Parents Get Involved? There are many ways that you as parents can help at home to assist children in the development of writing skills. 1) Provide your child with a range of materials that encourage writing and drawing. Examples include pencils, paper, scissors, glue and old magazines. 2) Write together. Encourage children to help you write on cards for family, shopping lists and their own artwork. You can provide examples for your child to copy or even dot out the letters to be traced. 3) Demonstrate how to write for your child. Talk to them about where to start on the page writing from left to right and leaving gaps between words.

4) Identify letters and words around the house and when you go out. Encourage children to recognise and name letters of the alphabet and letters from their name. When reading books with your child point to the words and get them to join in with familiar text. 5) Praise your child’s attempts at writing. Talk to your child about what they have written and ask them to point to the words as they talk. Name writing Helping your child to begin to write their name before starting College is beneficial but do not worry if it is not perfect. Before children can write their name they need to be able to recognise their name. Here at Prep we have been working on getting the children to recognise their name and have provided them with name cards to trace to develop their letter formation. Parents can support this development by encouraging their child to trace and copy their name. Some simple tips include: - Place a star on the left hand side of the page so that they

know where to start - Dot their name for them to trace - Use foundation font as this is how they are taught to write

at College - Use lower case letters except for first letter - Always write your child’s name the same way - Praise all attempts (Please note: Foundation font can be downloaded free of charge from the internet)

In the Classroom with Miss Edwards and Kindergarten Over the last few weeks Kindergarten have been looking at different aspects of our community. We have spoken to our parents about the kinds of jobs they do to help others and have designed and made a new community in our classroom. We also went for a walk around Oran Park Town and looked at the kinds of places we could visit or use within our local community. We also decided that Oran Park Town was in need of a few more things such as a circus, a space station, an ice skating rink, McDonalds and a pool. It’s been great fun!

‘Giants’ in Oran Park The College was visited by two members of the GWS Giants on Tuesday ,18 June 2013. Kristian Jaksch and Sam Reid, who have both experienced strong seasons, shared some of their history with the students and fielded various questions. It was a wonderful opportunity to hear some insight of what it is like to be professional sportsmen. The students enjoyed listening to the players and were very excited to be able to get each player’s signature. Special thanks to the GWS Giants and the AFL for organising the visit.

Mounties Got Talent We would like to congratulate Claudia Howard on progressing to Heat 5 in a singing contest of Mounties Got Talent. We wish her all the best for the night.

Live Life Well @ School Crunch&Sip Our College is committed to improving children’s health through education and by supporting the Department of Health’s Crunch&Sip initiative. Crunch&Sip is a set break for students to eat fruit or salad vegetables and drink water in the classroom. We invite you to support your child to participate in Crunch&Sip by providing a clean water bottle and a piece of fruit or vegetable each day for Crunch&Sip. Research has shown that drinking water and eating fruit and vegetables is essential for good health and can help concentration throughout the day. Naked Food Day On Tuesday, 25 June 2013, Oran Park Anglican College will be holding an official Crunch and Sip launch. As part of this launch day students are asked to bring lunches and snacks that are not pre-packaged. Each teacher will keep a tally of points for foods that are wrapper free and the winning class will be given a prize! Glad wrap, aluminium foil and other necessary wraps will not be penalised. There are some great games at http://www.nudefoodday.com.au/schools/interactive-activities.php for you and your child to look at. Have a go at weighing up your lunch.
