ACTIVITIES THAT WE HOPE YOU ENJOYED OR YOU MAY HAVE MISSED!....... Sunday 17th March: Long Reining at Eardington Ten members took Wren, George, Billie, Colin, Hellie, Charlie, Sparkie, William and Frankie into Shropshire on Sunday 17th March for the Long Reining Fun Day The Hill family generously hosted this popular early season activity and made us very welcome. Several drivers seemed to work a lot harder than their equine partners and there were a number of pink faces, cast clouts and mutterings about having to get fitter for the coming season. The participants first faced a series of individual exercises which included walking over a tarpaulin, trotting over trotting poles, passing a tape of bagpipe music and concluded with a bran tub which concealed a tube of polos for the equine and a Cadbury’s Cream Egg for the driver.

Next were the gymkhana games which were not intended to be races, but which became more and more competitive as they progressed. A break for lunch included a “multiple guess” style quiz and then we moved on to Country Dancing with main caller Tony Gregory who was criticised for not having bells on his legs. After a short practice they all performed a very creditable version of the “Wolverley Morris” with the horses and ponies becoming more proficient at every stage, although some seemed somewhat bemused. (The horses or the drivers?? Ed)

Tony Cowles and Tony Edwards took the red rosettes and all agreed they had had a happy and social day. G&ARB Saturday 6th April: Indoor Training Day ‘Sorry about the weather!’ An indoor training meeting was held at Hartlebury Village Hall on what seemed to be the first real, blue-sky day of Spring!

The morning began with sessions led by Tony Bache, Claudia Bunn and Tony Gregory which focused on horse fitness training, driving a dressage arena, rein handling and cart maintenance. There were plenty of opportunities to ask questions and to share concerns along the way but, above all it was helpful to listen and learn from those with many years experience and to pick up some useful tips. The afternoon focused on the various elements of a driving trial with everyone

getting involved with walking a cones course, familiarising themselves with a pre-novice driven dressage test, calculating marathon times and working out the best route around an obstacle course. All participants were presented with a certificate of attendance and comprehensive course notes at the end of the day. The red rosettes, however, belonged to Tony B., Claudia and Tony G. for their patience and encouragement and for giving of their time so selflessly. The course provided a fitting balance of theory and practice as part of the WDDC’s overall training programme which will culminate in a one-day Driving Trial to be held at Charlcotte Farm on 8th September. A big ‘thank you’ as ever to everyone who worked so hard behind the scenes to make it such a successful day; in particular, to Gill Bache for ensuring that everything ran to schedule, to Carol Gregory for the continuous refreshments and to Sandra Philips for organising the excellent venue. Sunday 28th April: Wyre Forest Drive

The club’s first outdoor event of the season was favored with sunshine and dry ground conditions.

Ten turnouts, including members, guests and visitors, enjoyed the Worcestershire forest at its springtime best. On the forest tracks there is no traffic – only mountain bikes and walkers, complete with dogs and children. Philip and Barbara Wright, ahead of Claudia Bunn’s tandem, on the forest track, traveled from Leicestershire, where they are members of the Leicester BDS.

For dog owners, it can be difficult – some are concerned their dog will bark at a horse and frighten it, others are afraid a horse will kick. In the forest, dogs are allowed off the lead, so to regain control, as a ridden or driven horse looms large in the distance, can be challenging. It’s also difficult for parents of small children as turnout after turnout approach. Hopefully all our members and guests were considerate, slowing down or stopping to allow time for other forest users to stand to one side as we pass by.

There were two routes on offer – a short route of 4.5 miles and a longer one of 6.5 miles. Some drivers took the opportunity of doing both routes, completing both before a well-earned lunch break at the car park prior to packing up for home.

David Smith, Linda Sprosen and Dawn Tebbett ably organized and ran the event.

The Worcestershire Bridleways Riding Association (WBRA) kindly arranged for us to use their club car park and provided one-day-permit hatbands. WBRA, in conjunction with The Forestry Commission, manage the Wyre Forest on behalf of the equine community.

For year-round access to their forest tracks and secure car park, contact the WBRA via their website, to enquire about membership.

Sunday 19th May: Practice/Mini Fun Day at Prestwood

This day was the first of three practical training days expertly designed and executed by Wolverley District Driving Club. It was great to see a range of ponies and horses in action with their Whips, and the atmosphere was really welcoming and encouraging. We had the opportunity, under the watchful eye of experienced colleagues, to practice our dressage, cones and marathon plus have any questions answered, and help with our harnessing up - I promise the sheepskin attachment is only a temporary arrangement! It was a fantastic day and fantastic weather - not sure how they managed this, but someone must know someone in high places.

Really looking forward to the next one and promise to work on that dressage test! Thank you to Tony and Gill Bache and all the helpers and volunteers who made this possible - it really is appreciated. Also thank you to Clare who without any prior warning volunteered to be my groom and of course Mork "my little pony" who is a little superstar and very obliging. I really can't thank everyone enough for putting on a great experience. Giselle Lockett There were thirteen entries forward on the day with one withdrawal. A very encouraging turnout, with several members who had been to the Hartlebury Training Day putting theory into practice. Ed.

HARD HAT RULING FOR YOUNGER MEMBERS As a Club affiliated to the British Driving Society, your committee have been made aware that in the interest of our duty of care to younger members, a formal ruling should be introduced on the wearing of hard hats. At the recent committee meeting, it was unanimously agreed to adopt the BDS ruling as follows: With effect from May 1st 2013, drivers and grooms who are under the age of 14 years and who are participating in any WDDC officially organised event, activity or competition, will be required to wear a hard hat which fits, whilst on any horse drawn vehicle, and this will include grooms who have dismounted to assist with the horse. For clarification, a hard hat would require to have the same criteria applied as that of a riding hat. That is – Kite marked to the latest current safety standard and with the appropriate chin strap harness attached. The current safety standards are EN 1384, BSEN 1384 and PAS 015. The British Driving Society and WDDC are sure that you will understand just how important the safety of our younger members is, and will recognise the ruling as a positive step towards ensuring safety at all officially organised events. This Ruling is in addition to existing Club Rules regarding the wearing of hard hats.

The articles within this Newsletter reflect the views of the contributors, and are not to be taken as representative of the Wolverley & District Driving Club.

Sandy Blakeway-Smith 1937 – 2013 Sandy and David were married in 1961. David was posted to Burma as a missionary and, as she had trained as a teacher of deaf children, Sandy was keen to be able to apply her training there. On the way there they had an extended stay in India where she was introduced to a lady who had a 2 year old deaf daughter. Sandy taught the little girl while they waited for the Burma posting to be confirmed, and then once, they had moved, helped the mother by correspondence. The upshot was that the mother set up a school for deaf children in India, which is still going, and the daughter is now the vice-principal of a school for deaf children in America. Meanwhile Sandy was busy setting up a school for deaf children in Burma on the veranda of their home there. David and Sandy had to leave Burma quite suddenly when the Political situation worsened, but happily that school still exists, and she was still in touch with some of her former pupils. Sandy came to driving quite late. She was given a miniature Shetland in the early ‘90s and then borrowed another with the intention of driving them as a pair or tandem. She came to a fun day in 1997 to watch and see what happened and was quickly conscripted to groom for Vickie Poole. She loved it and joined the Club in 1998. To begin with she had neither cart nor transport for the ponies, so spent hours long reining them as a pair, which got them all fit. She soon got herself organised with a Land Rover Discovery towing a Sinclair trailer and a Bellcrown pairs vehicle, and was to be seen at most Club activities. She was not, however, satisfied with confining herself to WDDC. She was a regular indoor competitor and went on drives as far afield as the Badminton Estate and Lake Vyrnwy. She then acquired two standard Shetlands, Triumph and Del Boy. These names were quickly shortened to Umph and Oy and she intended driving them as a pair, but sadly, although she had been told they had been driven as a pair, Umph had other ideas and proved unsatisfactory. Oy was quite the opposite and gave Sandy many happy hours of driving all over the place. Despite her assertions to the contrary Sandy was very competitive and speed was always a major factor in her driving. All this with very little help, even organising a way to put to by herself so that she could drive solo in the Wyre Forest and at Lincomb. She also found a series of competent lightweight grooms to back step for her. Latterly she had been helping Sandra Phillips with the Driving for the Disabled at Stourport and had also been helping to teach a deaf boy at Abberley School. Her smiling face, shrieks of delight when the ponies went well and her constantly cheerful attitude will be much missed. Out thoughts are with David, daughter Shireen, son Jonathan and the grandchildren. ARB Sandy will be missed by the Carriage Driving Team from Chadsgrove School. She was a great supporter of the group ‘Horse Wheelers’. This group enable wheelchair disabled pupils aged 7 to 19 from Chadsgrove School to go Carriage Driving weekly at Stourport Riding Centre. THE CLIPPER RALLY EXPLAINED How do you fancy a drive around quiet country lanes with a bit of a challenge thrown in? On Sunday 21st July, the Club is organising a Clipper Rally from Mount Pleasant Farm, Elmley Lovett starting at 10.00am. (See schedule below) Before hand, and once you have sent in your entry form, you will be sent a map and a list of coordinates known as map references. You will plot the coordinates on the map at home, and decide for yourselves what route you will take to visit as many of them as possible. On the day, you should arrive in plenty of time to get ready, put to and start at your designated time. It is no use following someone else, as they may have chosen to go a completely different way! On arriving at your chosen coordinates, you will be looking for a plant pot hanging from a gate, hedge, tree etc. Inside the plant pot is a ‘clipper’. This has a number, and you will use the clipper to punch the same numbered square on a card that you were issued with at the Start. Clipping the wrong square brings penalties – so be careful. There is a maximum time for the drive, with more time for little ponies than for the larger horses. You must, at some point, decide whether you are able to visit all the clippers, or if you must get back to the Start Point before your time runs out. You can just treat the exercise as simply a pleasant drive out, but it is much more fun if you take it a little more seriously. The final placings are reached by checking how many squares have been clipped on every one’s cards. Whoever gets the most squares correctly clipped on their card, and gets back within the time allowed is in with a chance of a place on the leader board. Come on now – get your entry in and give it a go!

By kind permission of Ivan & Carolyn Meredith. Introduction: - The ‘Clipper Rally offers a ‘fun’ day out for everyone who enjoys a good drive out in the Country with the added thrill of a treasure hunt. Clipper rallies are similar to Orienteering. The entry will comprise of Whip and Groom with any combination of single or multiple horses or ponies. The aim of the competition is to achieve the highest pointes scored by finding as many control markers as possible within a fixed period of time. The markers will be situated within roughly 6 miles radius of the Start/Finish. Each marker will be found close to a track or lane, and comprise of a brightly coloured marker with ‘coded’ card punching clippers attached. Each Turnout Requirements i. Maps and grid ref co-ordinates will be sent to competitors beforehand + necessary equipment and overall time. ii. A ‘Competitors Card’ given to you on day which will have spaces for punching at each control(clipper) that you

your final score can be determined. iv Competitors require Stop Watch, Clip Board and Plastic Wallet to keep paperwork dry. Scoring. i. Some of the markers will be worth double points i.e. 10 points instead of 5. ii Only the organisers will know where these markers are situated. iii It is unlikely that any team will be able to find all the controls within the allocated time. time penalties will be given i.e. 1 point taken away for each minute over the allocated time. iv Markers can be visited in any order but will only count once.
