The carnival spirit was very evident at assembly yesterday with many wanting to share their excitement and enthusiasm with Sparkles! Our school captain Jake Taranto encouraged children to enjoy the numerous sporting activities on the oval including: Rowing competition, treadmill competition Cycling (stationary bike) competition Netball goal shooting, Obstacle course Basketball hot shots and tug of war Martial arts demonstrations, Massage Fastest soccer goal kick competition Footy handball & kicking competition Running time trials comp, balance activities!

Carnival Entertainment We have two stage areas for the carnival: the Alhambra Stage and the Pimms Boutique Market area in the quadrangle; both will have some great attractions including: HPS choir Hampton’s Got Talent Southern Area Concert Bands #1 and #2 Oscar Proy - vocalist Joel Bowditch - vocalist I greatly look forward to seeing community members on Friday! There are only 2 more sleeps until carnival day!

Mini Master Chef On Monday the courtyard was filled with some very impressive cakes and enticing fragrances, we had 121 entries for the HPS Mini Master Chef competition! There were two categories: Best Creative Cupcake for Prep, Grade 1 and 2 – judged on creativity and presentation Most Delicious Sweet Treat for Grade 3 and 4 (Junior) and Grade 5 and 6 (Senior) – judged on flavour and presentation. The younger children really entered into the culinary spirit; we had so

much interest that we created 3 categories and identified some super chefs accordingly. One that impressed noticeably was Sean the Sheep (pictured). The excitement and interest in cooking was very obvious and it was delightful to see so many children prepared to have a go. I can only imagine what the kitchens at home looked like on Sunday! We had quite a bit of cake and icing on the ground here too! I extend my congratulations to all 121 children for embracing this competition. I am aware that many accessed family members, Google and cook books to consider possible designs, and my goodness, the results were extraordinarily creative, clever and unexpected! This included a cleverly designed barbecue and picnic setting, a tray of hamburgers, a Rapunzel cake with her hair extending to her feet and the Hufflepuff dormitory which had hidden delights inside only visible with torchlight (the torch was part of the entry!) It was lovely to see the expressions on children’s faces showing joy and pride as they brought their cakes to display in the courtyard. Well done to the following children:

Sincere thanks go to Yolanda from Beautiful Delicious Cake Shop in Hampton Street and Kirsty Reynolds for their expertise and enthusiasm with judging the cakes, this was a difficult job! In addition Emily Beasley, Fi Gathercole and Katie Flockart played a pivotal role in organising the event and ensuring that the children enjoyed the experience. We had a team of volunteers assisting on the day, receiving and labelling cakes, setting up and clearing away the cakes. My thanks go to this enthusiastic team! The event raised just over $1300 towards the carnival. The mini master chef finalists will appear on stage at the carnival at 6pm on Friday.

Our preps walked down the red carpet for the very first time at assembly yesterday. The audience enthusiastically welcomed the 103 little ones, many of whom were excited to be up on stage. Some of the Year 6s added to the atmosphere by releasing green and red streamers from the top floor verandah. Previously at Hampton we have balloons at our very special assemblies, however we are very mindful of the environmental implications and looked for sustainable alternatives. The environmental captains Bryce Ricketts and Jasmine Jones addressed the assembly with confidence on this matter. It was lovely to have our whole school together for the assembly.

My thanks go to 5C who led the singing of the national anthem.

Parent Information Evenings The following days and time have been set for the parent information sessions next week following the Twilight Carnival which will involve parents of children in Years 1-6. (Foundation teachers are conducting pastoral care interviews with parents on Wednesday 1

st March in

classrooms.

Monday 27 February 6.00pm Year 2 BER building

Monday 27 February 7.00pm Year 4 BER Building

Tuesday 28 February 6.00pm Year 5 &6* BER building

Wednesday 1 March 6.00pm Year 1 BER Building

Thursday 2 March 6.00pm Year 3 BER building

The meetings will commence promptly, we anticipate most meetings will go for an hour. Parents will have the opportunity to receive a general outline of expectations, curriculum and special activities including camps, excursions, swimming etc., from the teachers and also to ask questions that may be of interest. The meetings are not intended to be a parent teacher interview reporting on student progress – these discussions will be conducted early in Term 2.

Please note: School Photos: will be taken on Wednesday 8 and Thursday 9 March. Details will be distributed shortly. Access to School It has been drawn to my attention that some parents have been parking in the Bayside Council Health Centre car park directly opposite the school in Hampton Street. This is making access to the health centre very difficult. Parents are requested to not park in this car park. Please consider the following options: Walking to school Riding or scooting to school Sharing the load and organising to take neighbouring children or friends in the one car Parking your car further up Ludstone Street or in neighbouring streets and then walking to

school Bringing your children to school a little earlier so there will be parking available close to the

school. Buddy Program All Year 6s have been very excited to welcome their prep buddies to Hampton. They take this responsibility seriously. They had the opportunity to build a connection with their buddies last year attending a buddy picnic, developing a picture story book and presenting this to them, and regular meet, greet and playtime opportunities this year. Some feedback from two Year 6 buddies is shown below: My buddy is Euan, one of my jobs is to help him to meet other preps at play and lunchtime so eventually he can make some friends. We had success, Euan found one boy who had the same interests. Despite the fact that Euan had a friend I had to adjust some of the play to keep them both happy. Euan is definitely a talker; initially we spent a fair bit of time just chatting. It is a big responsibility to be a buddy. I needed to really think about safety, he needed to be reminded to tie his shoe laces, to watch where he was running. At first he did occasionally trip a little because he was excited to be in the front playground that he didn’t watch where he was going. He often followed me over to the BER building at the end of recess because he didn’t want playtime to be over! I am interested to watch Euan develop over the year. He told me he wants to be a scientist and he already knows about formulae! Jake Taranto 6C

DOGS AT SCHOOL

A reminder to parents that if you bring your dog into the school yard it must remain

leashed and under the supervision of an adult

at all times.

Please do not leave your dog tied up and

unattended.

I requested Josie because she is my neighbour; I thought it might be best if she knew the buddy. Josie came to school with lots of friends from kinder, but also made a few new friends. When she started school I showed her around the oval, the portables and the library so she would feel comfortable with the surroundings. Initially I tried to help with her friendship group to decide on what they would play and where they could play. We had to compromise quite a bit; it was a good lesson for them to learn that they don’t always get exactly what they want. I thought that the preps would know some of the rules, they actually didn’t know any! I spent a fair bit of time explaining how school works. Occasionally I had to remind them to think before they speak if they want to keep their friends. I am looking forward to seeing how Josie might change over the year. Amelie Blackham 6C Year 1B Mission Statements Children in many classes have been discussing and formulating classroom values and a mission statement. Two children from 1B came to share their ideas with me recently: The best Bs will help each other be caring and include one another. We will be respectful and have fun. If we accidently exclude people we will go and look at our mission statement and then we will know how to fix things. Jack Sampson and Zac Saunders Sue Knight Principal
