Mandarin News Year 1 and 2 students enjoyed a shadow puppet show and some workshops last Friday to conclude their unit of learning. Traditional shadow puppets are popular and commonplace in China and other

Asian countries. Students from both year levels learnt about the history of shadow puppets and came to appreciate how some Asian cultures spend their leisure time. They were fascinated with the science of how puppets and light worked together to create an impressive performance. The children had a follow up session to make some puppets and present a shadow puppet play for their group.

Year 2s spent a session learning to play Chinese drums and cymbals as part of a celebratory dragon dance. This week Jeffic Ye, our Mandarin teacher, will finish teaching and commence Maternity Leave as she and her husband Kimi await the birth of their second child. Shannon Baker who currently works for one a day teaching Mandarin will increase his time fraction to 0.8 and work 4 days from Monday to Thursday each week. In addition, we have employed Stella Song who will teach Mandarin on Thursdays and Fridays. On

behalf of the community I extend my warmest wishes to Jeffic and Kimi as they approach this exciting time Debating Last week our Year 6 debaters took part on a local schools’ competition held at Brighton Secondary College. There were 3 speakers and one researcher per team and each grade entered one team in the competition. The topics selected aroused much interest, some included: That high schools should run from 9-5 That school uniforms should be banned Fashion does more harm than good That electronic games destroyed the playground That Australia should embrace nuclear energy Super heroes should be banned That television is bad for children That we should all accept graffiti as art That every child should have a mobile That social networking is making us anti-social That we should ban the sale of fur That people shouldn’t keep pets I extend congratulations to all debaters. Debating is a wonderful skill to be developing in primary children. I watched Team 3 from 6C perform and they were adept, very confident and quick thinking. This team ended up winning the competition! My thanks go to the Year 6 teachers and to Jane Alderman in particular who coordinated our involvement in this worthwhile activity. Some feedback from a few of the debaters is shown below. When we arrived, our nerves got in the way a bit, trying to anticipate what the debate would be like. When I actually started to speak, I was more focused and didn’t have time to panic. My team devoted more thinking time to the first debate topic: ‘That high schools should run from 9 to 5’. Next time I would spend more time researching possible rebuttals so I would be as organised as possible. Olivia Braakhuis 6A I really enjoyed the topic ‘Super heroes should be banned’. My team researched the arguments as a group. We found that only 20% of children would copy the violent behaviours that some super heroes exhibit confirming our position that super heroes should not be banned. I found the most challenging part was to come up with a rebuttal in a short space of time. Sometimes having to ‘think on your feet’ helps! Josh Bogue 6B I have never done a proper debate before so I was scared about the prospect of starting a debate. After my third debate, I got into the rhythm of the debating and felt a little more confident. The process was a lot more challenging than I expected. The opposition provided some strong arguments. I was trying to think fast and come up with rebuttals before they commenced talking. This was very stressful. I definitely got better at rebutting and more organised with my thinking. Amelie Blackham 6C

I didn’t really expect what happened. In the first round, we had to prepare arguments for the negative side when we had thought we were presenting for the affirmative! We had 10-15 minutes to prepare a speech, this put us under pressure and we certainly had to think very fast. I thought that Maya came up with a powerful argument. One of my arguments was that animals can make you a happy person. I would definitely have a go at debating again! Billy Morris 6D Academic Excellence Awards Congratulations go the following students who received academic excellence awards at assembly yesterday: Isla Feldman from FE for demonstrating an enthusiastic approach to school and

achieving commendable results in reading Ned Westacott from FE for displaying a positive approach to school and achieving

excellent results in reading Assembly Performances Well done to 2B who led the singing of the National Anthem at assembly yesterday. Congratulations go to the Lily Theuma in 2C, Avelyn Lawson in 2E and Juliette Hostein in 2C who performed ‘Merrily’ on violin at assembly yesterday. The three girls have more recently started lessons in violin and displayed confidence in front of the large assembly.

Grade 1 and 2 students have been very busy all term making a collagraph print. A collagraph print is simply a print taken from a collage. After looking at lots of trees and doing practise drawings in their diaries, the students have created their own beautifully detailed tree in a landscape. They are full of texture and quite haunting! These students presented their artwork and talked about the challenges of printing at assembly yesterday: Grace Goodwin, Frankie Steele, Nozumu Fujiwara, Scarlett Jimmink from 2A and Avelynn Lawson, Rory Greenan, Hugo Brown, Leon Thomas and Lily Smith from 2E. Sporting Excellence

Dylan Unkles in 4A and Lara Unkles in 2C have continued their great performances at the Victorian Taekwondo Championships this year. The Victorian State Titles in March and June saw Dylan win gold and silver medals. In her first year of competition, Lara has proven herself a natural talent also winning gold and silver medals in these two events. The National Titles are in October where Dylan is aiming to repeat his Australian Championship win from 2016 with another National Gold Medal! Lara is trying to catch her big brother’s medal tally and will be attending her first National Title to win another Gold!

Superhero and Villain Dress Up Day Last week many children embraced this theme with enthusiasm. The event generated over $700 for our two charities: Hampton Primary’s World Vision sponsor child Belinda Chewe and Educaring Africa, which is an organization that has been assisting with a number of projects in the Mangochi District in Malawi. My thanks go to the many children and parents who supported this fundraiser and entered into the spirit of the day.
