DR. PARAG AGARWALFounder & CEO, JanaJal(Honorary Doctorate for Social Work and Impact)

Having completed his Bachelor of Commerce in 1991 from the highly

acclaimed Pune University, Parag started working very early in life at the

age of 16. Across 3 decades, he has worked with global cutting-edge

technologies in diverse sectors and geographies to enable their

implementation in India. Renowned as a Technology Evangelist, his

biggest strength has been the ability to work with the private and public

sector, in India and overseas. Parag’s global exposure across various

industries and sectors included technology-based solutions in Integrated

Water and Waste Management, Agri-Logistics & Post Harvest

Infrastructure, Homeland Security and Drinking Water & Sanitation. In

2013 Parag identified the gap in peoples’ lives as regards safe drinking

water along with the need to make it Available and Accessible to all in an

Affordable and sustainable manner.

In 2013 he founded JanaJal, India’s first dedicated water services company that focused on

making safe water available to consumers and households in a sustainable manner. During the

past 6 years, JanaJal has built one of the widest cluster operations of water ATMs in India.

Simultaneously, the company has developed its own IP in the form of IT based technology

platform supported by sensors and IoT controllers that are connected to secure cloud servers to

provide qualitative and quantitative data in real-time. This globally unique technology platform

has proven to be the keystone for exponential growth and scale up of the company’s operations

in India and the world. Parag also envisioned the need to provide last metre delivery of safe

water to the doorstep of households to mitigate the much-desired accessibility problem faced by

women and children who assume the responsibility of fetching water for their families every day.

Therefore the company conceptualized and pioneered the use of Electric Vehicles in the social

sector by developing JanaJal WOW (Water on Wheels), a fully secure and technology managed

EV that delivers safe water deep into communities in a highly cost effective and reliable manner.

The JanaJal WOW has been recognized as the Symbol of Innovation in India by the Oxford

University in 2018 and more recently by the Jal Shakti Ministry. It is poised to contribute

significantly to the “Har Ghar Jal by 2024” mission of the Government of India. Over the past 6

years, the company has created hundreds of jobs, social entrepreneurs, upskilled individuals to

help them secure jobs as water treatment plant operators and above all, empowered women

who are now able to use their time for economically productive activities while children are able

to attend school instead of collecting water for their households.

The unique technology platform is now being extended by the company to operate and manage

decentralized water treatment infrastructure built over several decades under various City, State

and Central government schemes besides corporate houses and charitable foundations under

their respective CSR activities. Therefore, Parag is now working to bring millions of water

treatment plants under central monitoring and supervision management that allows for greater

operating efficiencies and higher capacity utilization of every water treatment plant by

harnessing existing infrastructure and eliminating the need to infuse new capital to build the

same.

Through Parag’s efforts during the past 6 years, over 15 Million people have benefitted with

access to approx. 90 Million litres of safe water while simultaneously eliminating more than

10 Million single-use plastic bottles from polluting the environment.

“Uberisation of water” is the dream with which Parag founded JanaJal and he strongly believes

that he is well on track to achieve this.

Sustainability begins where philanthropy ends. Safe drinking water has to be valued as a resource and hence priced.
