Highlights – 1Session 01, Setting the Scene

EU Telecom R&D programs designed to support standards with the goals• for 5G, to

• foster the emergence of global industry standards under EU leadership for key 5G technologies

• ensure that 5G standards are compatible with innovative use cases of vertical industries

• • for Internet of Things, to• foster an interoperable environment for IoT in cooperation with ESOs and

international SDOs

• promote an interoperable IoT numbering space and an open system for object identification & authentication

• explore options and guiding principles, including developing standards, for trust, privacy and E2E security

• promote the uptake of IoT standards in public procurement to avoid lock‐in areas such as smart city services, transport and utilities (including water and energy)

Highlights of SESSION 2: A selection of 5G Enablers, Chair: Francisco da Silva, Huawei

New Business models built on Micro-Operators:

Context: Versatile location and case specific requirements for different environments with high traffic densities, particularly in indoors, need to be met.

Barriers: Entry barrier to the mobile market is high due to the limited availability of spectrum licenses which today are high-cost, long-term and come with nation-wide coverage obligations.

Solution: Concept of micro-operators (uO) - they will build indoor small cell communication infrastructures and offer context related services and content in local areas to complement existing mobile connectivity with the help of emerging 5G technology and locally issued spectrum licenses.

Highlights of SESSION 2: A selection of 5G Enablers, Chair: Francisco da Silva, Huawei

Advanced modulation and random access techniques for 5G communication systems:

Requirements: 1000x higher mobile data volumes, 10-100x higher end user rates, 10-100x up to 300.000 devices per cell, 99.9999% for e.g. mission critical communications, decreased latency down to the millisecond scale, increased efficiency.

Barriers: A thorough re-design of the radio interface is needed to cope with 5G requirements.

Solution: Advanced post-OFDM waveform designs (FBMC), MAC protocol for massive random access (DQ).

Highlightssession 3: On Future Network Architecture (1)

Reduce backhaul traffic through pro-active caching at the base-station

Radically simplify networking based on RINA (Recursive InterNetWork Architecture):• Single generic protocol mechanism and policies, 3 nodes (host, interior

router, border router)

• Reduces protocol stack complexity and eliminates protocol overhead e.g. no mobility protocols needed any more in mobile networks

• RINA can be deployed as underlay, overlay, or gateway

Issues raisedsession 3: On Future Network Architecture

Multiple trade-offs• between densification/backhaul offloading and caching

• between latency and capacity

Sharing data of different owners

Different ownership of network slices

Domain description standards are missing

Hints to identify standardization topicssession 3: On Future Network Architecture

Separate algorithms from interfaces

What is needed to connect boxes/plug boxes together?

Generalise a solution for a specific use case to other use cases to identify commonalities as potential subjects for standardization

Abstract implemented functions and map functional entities to existing network entities: which interfaces/protocols need to be modified or are missing?

Prepare selling points for a technical solution to get supporters for standardization

Highlights / issues raisedSession 5 On Virtualization Techniques for 5G

On Virtualization Techniques for 5G

5G will be more than a new radio interface

5G is about new network architecture: a unified programmable and shareable infrastructure to deliver Service Agility, Service Diversityand Resource efficiency - being future-proof and ready to serve even not yet identified use case and radio technologies

Different resources shared within virtualized network.

→ Orchestration needed to enable different apps with different

requirements.

Orchestration has to translate End-to-end services requirements in requirements for transport, processing and Radio Access Network.
