Caryn and I blow shofar at home everyday (except Shabbat), so for the past two days I have struggled - not so successfully - to get a clear, strong sound out of our shofar! As we are both rabbis, we have already spent a lot of time planning for the holidays and the next four weeks are among the most hectic in our year. This morning I was doing some work on the holidays and read my first Rosh Hashanah sermon at TVO in 2009. It is a very personal, introductory sermon sharing my personal history and core beliefs to the congregation. If you would like to read it, you can find it on our website <www.tikkunvor.org>. Over this coming month devoted to teshuva/turning/transformation, I hope that we all find some time everyday to feel gratitude for the gift of being alive and that we make personal choices that bring more love, joy and meaning into our lives. Do something fun everyday! Do something new and meaningful every day! And, may it be a month when we realign our lives with our deepest values and with our commitment to serve the greatest good for all and for our planet. In the Yamim Noraim supplement to this newsletter, you will find some suggestions that may be helpful. Like last year, the upcoming High Holidays are in the context of a profound moral emergency in America, in Israel, and for our entire planet. We will celebrate all the small and big ways in which members of our community, and our community as whole, has upheld the vision of love, justice and peace for all which is the most important principle of Judaism. We will also explore how we may choose to join with others in taking bold steps in the coming year to help turn our country and Israel towards justice, freedom and equality for all and toward a life that sustains and protects our planet. In this regard, I am very excited that Dr. Nia Nunn will be our Isaiah Challenge speaker this year. She is such an inspiring leader in our community who is devoted to sharing her wisdom with the next generation. I am sure she will challenge and inspire us all. This talk, like our services, is open to the community at large. Please invite others to join us for this and any other part of our services. I am looking forward to singing, dancing and praying with you as we join together to welcome the blessing of a brand new year. With love and blessings for peace / shalom, Rabbi Brian P.S. If you want to listen to something very inspiring, I recommend listening to Reverend Barber’s extraordinary eulogy for Dorothy Cotton. You can listen to it on the recording of the event in her honor that was held at Cornell this past Saturday. His eulogy is from 32:10 - 55:20. I think you will be very moved and it is extremely relevant to the spiritual/ethical work we are called to do this month. If you listen to all of it from the beginning you’ll hear beautiful music from the Dorothy Cotton Jubilee Singers and see the beautiful faces of several TvO members who are part of the choir! Co-Presidents’ Words thabv hrcs

We have found ourselves arriving at the high holidays once again. As the plants around us begin to ready themselves for winter, we use the call of the shofar to pause and prepare for the rejuvenation that will carry us through the year until we arrive here again. In our Jewish tradition, the shofar calls us to come together in order to pause, breathe, pray, reflect. It invites

us to journey inward, looking deeply inside ourselves for the truths that need our attention. Like so many Jewish traditions, however, this individual journey of reflection and repair relies on the coming together of the community. It calls us to pause together as a community, to breathe together, to open our individual hearts inside of a community of opening hearts, and to renew ourselves as individuals in our own right, as individuals in a community and as a whole community.

The high holidays show us that when we tend to the community, we create a container that can anchor us and keep us steady when we have challenging work to do. Our congregation confronts so much throughout the course of the year, personally, spiritually, and in the service of social justice. It isn’t always easy. We have tragedy, disappointment, fierce disagreement, we make mistakes, and we don’t always show up in the ways we want to. The high holidays give us the

opportunity to pause, breathe, reflect, and do our repair work. In the process of doing that work together, we are reminded that as we rise to meet the challenges the year brings us, we are not alone. We are held in this wonderful, loving, challenging, imperfect community. The shofar calls us to find each other, to reach out for support and to be present for each other in all of our unique ways, as we wake up to wrestle with the truths of our lives, our relationships, and our world.

We are so grateful, this Rosh Hashanah, to pause, pray, and reflect with all of you, in this precious community that we grow and nurture together every day of the year. We wish you all the brightest new year blessings. May our individual and collective inscriptions in the Book of Life be complicated and colorful, written in design and secret code, with bold and beautiful illustrations. May they tell tales of all the ways we were excellent to one another, and the ways in which we held each other as we did the hard work of looking deeply inside ourselves to learn how to do better, and the ways in which together we struggled and worked and danced and sang and grieved and celebrated and marched and organized (and sang and danced some more)....all in the service of Love. Shana tova!

This We Believe, This I Believe:Core Ideas and Practices of Judaism

Taught by Rabbi Brian WaltMonday Evenings 7:00-8:30 pm

October 8, November 12, December 10, April 1, June 10

In 2010 Rabbi Brian offered the class “This We Believe, This I Believe” that explored the faith and practice of Judaism and our own personal faith and spiritual/ethical practice. In 2018-19 Rabbi Brian will offer a class on the same topic using two new texts as basic resources. In 2010 we used Radical Judaism by Arthur Green as the primary text. This coming year we will use a short booklet by Rabbi Green, Judaism’s 10 Best Ideas: A Brief Guide for Seekers, and a thought provoking book by Ana Levy Lyons, No Other Gods: The Politics of the Ten Commandments.

Liberal Jews often find it difficult to define what it means to be Jew. Is there anything one must believe or practice as a liberal Jew? Using the two books assigned for the class, and maybe some additional readings, we will explore what ideas and practices of Judaism are compelling and meaningful for us.

This class will offer participants an opportunity to reflect on their own spiritual journey as well as their moral beliefs and practices. Participants will conclude the class by writing a personal belief statement. To support this process of reflection, participants are required to come to all class sessions, and encouraged (not required) to read between monthly class sessions, keep a journal, experiment with taking on new spiritual practices and meet with other participants between class sessions.

No prior knowledge is required and the class is open to anyone interested in learning about Judaism and exploring their own spiritual journey and spiritual/moral beliefs and practice. Those who attended the class in 2010 are also encouraged to attend.

Special Program: Hidden in France

In July, 2011, I returned to the Dior family’s ancestral village in Normandy to visit the graves of my great grandparents. At the central square I found the following plaque, which had not been there my previous visit:

HERE IN SAVIGNY LE VIEUXSOME THIRTY JEWISH CHILDRENWERE WELCOMED AND PROTECTEDBETWEEN 1942 AND 1949

THANKS TO THE COURAGE OF A FEW VILLAGERSAND THE WATCHFUL BENEVOLENCEOF THE VILLAGE COMMUNITYLET US REMEMBER THE HUMANITYTO WHICH THE MEMBERS OF THIS COMMUNITYGAVE PROOF.

I had tears in my eyes. Later, through a card purchased in the Holocaust Museum in Washington, I was able to recognize my ancestral village in a watercolor painted by Simon Jeruchim, one of the Jewish children hidden in Savigny, and now a well known artist. Simon and his wife Cecile, together with four members of my village, will participate in Shabbat services at TVO on October 12, 2018, and will make a presentation open to the public at TVO Sunday afternoon, October 14, from 2 to 4 PM. Simon will display some 15 watercolors he painted while hidden in Savigny.

All are welcome. -- Tony Dior Gaenslen

Fall 2018 Dear Community Member,

One of IAUJC’s important goals is to engage our next generation. This is so vital for the continued vibrancy of our Jewish community. We are proud of our efforts to encourage our youth this past year and in the coming months. We hope that you will support our efforts and join our work.

The B’Yachad Ithaca Jewish Preschool has been a recipient of grants from IAUJC since its inception. The school is housed at Temple Beth El and serves children ages 2.5 to 5 years old. It is the only preschool in our area that offers a strong Jewish component in addition to a comprehensive general studies curriculum, based on the New York State preK common core standards. The school has recently undergone a transition from independent to Temple Beth El oversight. It is fully staffed and seeking new students!! Keep this in mind in case you know of potential families. For more information, visit www.ithacajewishpreschool.com. Help to support B’Yachad and other local programs by making a gift to IAUJC’s LOCAL FUND.

Since 2015, with the support of the Robert and Marcia Ascher Endowment and other generous donors, IAUJC grants have been helping families afford to send their children to Jewish overnight camps and teen summer programs. Last May, Mat Rebera, a recipient of a grant to Eisner Camp, spoke at our annual IAUJC dinner of how his years at camp have influenced his values and helped him to hone his skills as a Jewish leader. Over $35,000 in grants, have been sent directly to camps since 2015. This summer we assisted 6 local youth. If you or a family member has ever attended Jewish camp, please contact us. We are hosting a CHARETTE (An intense period of design or planning activity) about Jewish summer camp. Would you like to share your experiences and help others have that opportunity? Join us on Tuesday, August 28, 6:30-8:30 PM at the Just Because Center, 1013 West State St. All are welcome. We hope to create a buzz around Jewish camping. Please let us know you are coming by writing to [email protected]. Help to support our efforts to send children to Jewish programs by making a gift to IAUJC’s JEWISH SUMMER CAMP & TEEN EXPERIENCES FUND.

PJ Library (ages 6 months to 8 years) and PJ Our Way (ages 9 to 11), are both programs supported and administered by IAUJC since 2008. Our next community event will be a Mitzvah Day at Kendal on October 21st. Would you like to help connect young families and seniors in an effort to help others? Please let me know. We welcome your ideas and support. Help to support our efforts to engage young families in the culture of Judaism through PJ Library by making a gift to IAUJC’s PJ LIBRARY FUND. With sincere wishes for a Healthy, Happy and Prosperous New Year, Marjorie Hoffman
