Nick shares the insight and experience gained through his involvement in the creation of one of the UKs larger social enterprises, created through the merger of departments of a local authority and a local PCT and their spinout into the open market.
As well as sharing insights about the activities required, Nick tackles controversial issues like whether or not public sector workers are up to the private sector challenge, and how you properly balance the public sector service ethos with an appropriate bottom-line focus.

1. Gain political, staff, union and wider organisation support.
2. Build business, financial and marketing plans, and ensure that the business will be viable.
3. Set up the business: governance, contracts, service specifications, licenses to operate, staff TUPE, bank accounts, insurance, asset transfer, tax and VAT, ledgers, pension arrangements and branding.
4. Get the business fit-for-purpose: define, design and implement the operating model, adapt performance management arrangements, and develop new commercial capabilities.
5. Close the gaps in the parent organisation and develop new capabilities in the parent organisation.
6. Manage the change so as not to negatively impact service delivery whilst ensuring that the benefits are gained as early as possible.
