FROM PASTOR DAVE…

Oh the blessings and curses of living in this winter wonderland! I just love having enough snow to go cross

country skiing and snow shoeing. It’s beautiful and peaceful in the woods. It smells clean and fresh. And yet

… all that snow sometimes needs to be moved. I’ve seen pictures of a friend’s outbuilding/shop with a caved

in roof from all the weight of the snow. So like many of you, I have been up on the roof of our house moving

the three feet of snow accumulated. And yes – I have an “Avalanche” snow rake with the neat slippery slide,

which makes it easier for those portions of the roof that are straight. And yet … looked at from above, our

house looks like a plus sign (or I suppose I should say “cross”). That means I have four valleys, and as they are

slanted sideways, in addition to down, the Avalanche does not work well. It gets the first 16 feet of the areas

outside of the valleys. The rest we get to move by hand. And it’s heavy. And it’s hard on the back. And I

don’t have the stamina I used to have. And it wipes me out, so that I’ve gone to bed by 8:00 pm the past two

nights. And we’re still not done (only about ¼ left!) But I love having enough snow to go cross country skiing

and snow shoeing! And I do like living here – because of and in spite of all the snow.

You could say it’s a mixed bag. Kind of like life. We have highs and lows. Things that make us smile, laugh,

proud, pleased, as well as things that drag us down, burden us, make us sad or mad. My little lesson of life

and faith as I reflect on the blessings and curses of snow is that we need to make time for enjoying God’s

Great Northwoods. We need to make time for recreation. We need to make time for re-creation. We will

find greater fulfillment when we are able to stop and smell the roses, or to stop and smell the balsam trees,

and to take in the beauty of the snow clinging to the balsam branches. We will be better grounded when we

are able to stop and to thank God for God’s many blessings. At the same time, we know there is work to be

done, things to accomplish, places to go and people to meet and errands to run. The heavy lifting of life needs

to be done. Take your time. Work together (I am so blessed that Gayle is working on the snow with me!).

Take breaks. Breathe. And know that no matter what burdens you carry or need to move, the Spirit of God is

as close as a breath. God surrounds you and fills you. Jesus invites all who are weary and carrying heavy

burdens to come to Him, and He will give us rest.

Yes – God is with us in the good times, times we are enjoying the beauty of creation, and God is with us as we

deal with the burdens of life – and the burden of heavy snow. May we sense God’s presence in it all.

NEW STABLE BUILT BY JACOB AHCAN

This past Christmas Eve, you may have noticed a new stable as part of

our Live Nativity. The previous stable had deteriorated to the point that

we burned it at last year’s Epiphany celebration. Jacob Ahcan, member

of St. Andrew’s his whole life, stepped up and offered to build a new one

as part of his final project in his quest to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout.

Jacob also built a new altar table for our lakeside worship area together

with a platform so it stands level. Finally, he also built a new bench at

the top of the hill on the trail that leads to the lake.

Thank you, Jacob, for thinking of your church for your Eagle Scout

Project. And CONGRATUALTIONS on achieving the prestigious rank of

Eagle Scout!

The Rev. Dr. Herbert W. Chilstrom, 88, first presiding bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran

Church in America (ELCA), died January 19, at his home in Green

Valley, Arizona. There will be a memorial service at 1:00 p.m.

Saturday, February 15, at Christ Chapel Gustavus Adolphus College,

St. Peter, Minnesota. ELCA Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton will

preside and bring a greeting, and Presiding Bishop Emeritus Mark

Hanson will preach.

The Rev. Dr. Herbert W. Chilstrom was born October 18, 1931, in

Litchfield, Minnesota. Chilstrom completed academic degrees at

Augsburg University, Augustana Seminary, Lutheran School of

Theology at Chicago, Princeton Seminary and New York University,

where he earned a doctorate in education degree.

He served Lutheran congregations in Pelican Rapids, Elizabeth and

St. Peter. He was professor and dean at Luther College, Teaneck,

New Jersey, from 1962 to 1970. In 1976, he was elected bishop of

Minnesota Synod of the Lutheran Church in America (LCA). At the 1987 merger that created the 5.2

million member ELCA, he was elected first presiding bishop.

Chilstrom served on numerous boards of directors, including those of the Lutheran World Federation,

Geneva, Switzerland (as vice president); Luther Seminary, St. Paul; Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota;

Gustavus Adolphus College, St. Peter and National Council of Churches.

After retirement, he continued to be active in church and community, preaching and lecturing in many

parts of the country. He became a Minnesota master gardener, volunteering and serving as interim

director at Linnaeus Arboretum at Gustavus Adolphus College. Blessed be his memory.

football-themed game night where we are all on God’s team!

joke…come to youth group from 6:30-8:00 pm for some chatting about how we

are called to be welcoming. Plus - of course - games, weirdness and fun!

***February 16th – I know it’s the start of your break from school, but I hope you

can still find time to come to youth group and have some fun!

***February 23rd – Get ready for an St. A’s style Amazing (G)Race! This is a team

game so bring your friends! The more the merrier!

Each Wednesday following the RECHARGE dinner (5:00-6:00 pm) and worship

BENEFIT CONCERT! Tri-United Lutheran Parish of Bovey, Warba,

and Jacobson will be hosting a special concert featuring musical

performers from their parish on Sunday, February 23 at 2:00 pm at St.

Andrew's Lutheran Church in Grand Rapids. Admission to the concert

is free -- free will offering collected to benefit Support Within

Reach and efforts to help victims of sexual violence and human

trafficking as well as raise awareness of human trafficking, a global

problem that also affects our northern Minnesota communities.

Following the concert, there will be pie and coffee. For more

SPECIAL CONTRIBUTION MADE TO HABITAT FOR HUMANITY

Recently St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church presented Itasca County Habitat for Humanity with a gift of $10,000. The congregation had made a commitment to give 10% of funds raised from the “For Such a Time AS This” appeal to ministries or non-profit organizations. The Congregation Council decided to make a contribution with each $100,000 raised. The gift to Habitat for Humanity was the first part of our tithe. Since the congregation has already raised slightly more than $200,000, the council will soon be deciding what organization to support with the next $10,000.

I recently read the book, ‘Holy Grounds: Coffee and Faith – From Dancing Goats to Satan’s Drink’ by Tim Schenck. Since I had not ever actually looked into the history of coffee and where it comes from, I was intrigued by what Pastor Schenck wrote. The book taught me that coffee beans grow on a tropical evergreen shrub or tree. From these trees the beans are harvested by picking “cherries” which each contain 2 of the coffee beans. This harvest is done by hand. After the cherries have dried, the beans are removed and dried some more, then hulled prior to exporting. There are

mainly two types of beans – Arabica (the better one!) and Robusta. As to the actual origins of coffee and its initial uses, the stories are varied and uncertain. The author shares his deep reverence that coffee brings to community building, serving as a basis for friendship and conversation. He explains how important it is to support Fair Trade coffee and talks about his visit to the Equal Exchange coop where coffee beans are roasted for the product that is sold here at St. Andrew’s. Reading this book has encouraged me to pursue the possibility of serving only Equal Exchange coffee at St. Andrew’s. As Pastor Tim says in this book, we need to provide a “good” cup of coffee as part of our hospitality to the congregation and visitors. At the same time we would be supporting the farmers associated with the Fair Trade coop called Equal Exchange.

The "Men's Breakfast" is a group of men who meet every Wednesday morning at 7:00 am at the Forest Lake Restaurant. Each week, they discuss the scripture for the next Sunday's worship service. It's a nice way to start the day. All men welcome to attend.

Prayer Shawl Ministry

It’s been a perfect winter to start a new craft, so if you are thinking of learning how to knit or crochet with a great group of women who make prayer shawls for people in need, we are your group! We meet the 4th Tuesday of the month at 10:00 am in the Fireside Room to work on our prayer shawls, pray for others, and have some fellowship time. We have yarn available if you need some. Women’s Coffee and Conversation Group meets the 1st and 3rd Tuesday each month at 9:30 am in the Fireside Room. Bible Study, treats and conversation. All women welcome.

Quilting Group meets every Wednesday at 9:30 am in the Fireside Room. It is never too late to join the quilters who continue their mission to provide quilts to those in need overseas and also in the USA. No experience necessary; all women welcome. There is a job for everyone. If you can’t make it every week, just come when you can. If you can’t make it on Wednesdays, we have quilt top kits available to take home to sew. They are located in the credenza; instructions included. Questions? Call Gail Shoemaker at 245-1202.

THANK YOU!! I especially thank everyone for their assistance during the holiday season. Increased expenses like heating bills, vehicle repairs due to cold weather and illnesses can create a temporary need for help. Having to choose between keeping your children warm or

having food in the house is no choice any parent wants to make. Thanks to your generous gift of $204.00, we are able to lessen that burden on struggling individuals and families. By supporting Second Harvest, you are helping to ensure that within north central Minnesota, hungry children, working families, disabled people and the elderly have enough food to put on their tables when times are tough. Through our Food Distribution Program, Second Harvest Food Shelf, Child Hunger Programs, Nutrition Assistance for Seniors Program (NAPS) and SNAP Outreach, we are able to provide over 3 million meals a year to those in need. LENTEN FAITH MENTORING

Once again, all youth in our FINK confirmation program will be looking for an adult to serve as their

Lenten Faith Mentor. A Mentor is someone who will commit to worshipping with the youth they are

mentoring and then engaging in a guided discussion of life and faith. (Printed discussion guides are

provided each week.) The goal of the mentoring program is to provide each youth with yet another

trusted adult at St. Andrew’s – someone who will take an interest in them, love them, pray for them,

and hopefully greet them whenever they see each other in church or in the community. Please

consider saying “yes” if a youth asks you to be their mentor. Or, upon reading this, perhaps you would

let Pastor Dave know that you would be willing to mentor someone who has yet to find a mentor. You

can make a difference in the life of a young person – a member of the same body of Christ and family of

God you are part of.

Calling all preschool age families—St. Andrew's Preschool is now accepting registrations for the 2020/2021 school year. There are 2 classes: Monday/Wednesday/Friday for students planning to go into kindergarten in September 2021 and Tuesday/Thursday for kids who are 3 years old and potty trained by September 1, 2020. Attention Thrivent Members: Through the Thrivent Choice Dollars program, you may have undirected choice dollars

remaining from 2019 to be directed. By directing Choice Dollars, you can recommend where Thrivent distributes a

portion of its chartable grant funds. Participating in Thrivent choice is a wonderful way to help non-profit

organizations, such as St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church, that are doing great things in our community. The 2018 awarded

Choice Dollars expire on March 31, 2020. You have two options: 1) Go online to Thrivent.com/thriventchoice. If you

haven’t registered on Thrivent.com, you’ll first have to register and create a user ID, password and security question.

2) Call phone #800-847-4836 and say “Thrivent choice” when prompted. Thank you for directing your Thrivent Choice

Dollars to St. Andrew’s!

Also, if you are a Thrivent Member, you may be able to apply for a Thrivent Action Team Grant. Action Team Grants

provide ‘seed money’ for events hosted at/by St. Andrew’s. Please contact the church office and let us know you are a

Thrivent member so we can help you can take advantage of this program.
