Elul - Countdown There are a number of times when we note the period before (or sometimes after) an event or holiday. More than something that immediately precedes a holiday, such as the fast of Esther or fast of the First Born before Pesach, there can be a more extended period of preparation. One of the times I’ve written about before is the interval between Passover and Shavuot which leads up to the giving of the Torah on Mt. Sinai. That time is referred to as ‘Counting the Omer’ but there are other instances worth noting. The period before Tisha B’Av, when the month of Av begins is called the Nine Days with certain restrictions and prayers said. We are now in another one of the periods. Beginning with the month of Elul, the month before Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur, we turn our focus to the upcoming High Holidays. Besides adding Psalm 27 to our prayers and blowing the shofar at daily minyans, this is a period of our own introspection and evaluation. Customarily it is also time of study. Jewish schools and Yeshivas often set aside a special curriculum just for this month. Maybe it’s a recent phenomenon connected with the internet and social media, but I seem to see this year all kinds of blogs and facebook postings on ‘thoughts of the day’ tied with each day of Elul. I’m not sure that it’s necessary to have a daily learning but the overall idea is a good one.

Whenever something important in our life approaches - a wedding, graduation, a job interview, etc. - we gather things and thoughts to prepare for the event. In Hebrew there’s a word, kavanah which means intention (plural kavanot). A prayer may be strictly from the heart but there’s a great deal of value in knowing and dwelling on our intentions ahead of time, as a prelude to prayer. Before public speaking, it’s said you should visualize yourself in front of an audience. I think examining our kavanot and thinking about those things you will be praying about are the essence of High Holiday preparation. With that in mind, you may find helpful the joint Selichot program listed below on September 16th. I look forward to seeing you there and over the High Holidays at PJC. From the President’s Desk………………….Robert E. Korfin “And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people” (Neh. 8:5) is the biblical precedent for raising an open scroll so that the entire congregation can view the Torah script. The person who lifts the Torah traditionally opens at least three columns of the scroll before raising it up as high as possible, and then slowly turns to show the script to all assembled. This allows everyone in the congregation to see the text and proclaim “v’zot ha-Torah” (this is the Torah [that Moses placed before the Children of Israel]; Deut. 4:44). Some worshipers raise the edges of the tallit toward the script and then kiss the tzitzit , though the halachic (Jewish law) requirement is merely to bow toward the open Torah. So what’s the point? At the High Holy Days or even Shabbat, most people prefer an Aliyah (being called to the Torah). As our members move on in age and particular medical issues, the very thought of raising the Torah is unimaginable. On many Saturday mornings, if I am offered an Aliyah, I often look around the sanctuary to see who among those in attendance will be available to lift the Torah. This year, we may be restricted to the use of only one of our 4 Torahs. A couple of them have been sent off to the far away land of Brooklyn for repairs. I will speak more about this at the High Holy Days. Stay Tuned… The Service during the High Holy Days, especially Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur begin at 8:30 am. I don’t expect most of you to arrive that early. What I do expect and hope for is that you will stay until the end of the service which last year ended before 1:30 pm. Look, most of you don’t come during the rest of the year so staying until the service concludes for one or two days is not that much of a stretch; besides, it’s the right thing to do. We talk of “The Book of Life;” who will live and who will die. Since last year, we have lost far too many of our members. May this year be one of good health, happiness and most importantly LIFE. Then we will talk again…

Klezmer Guitar Recording Project In the beginning of August I went to Toronto and recorded for three days at Revolution Recording, one of the finest recording studios in North America. With Steven Greenman (violin), Marilyn Lerner (piano), Becky Khitrik (clarinet), and 'Lurch' Rudyk (engineer) we had wonderful and very productive sessions recording traditional, cutting edge and original klezmer music. After the high holidays, I will go into the studio here in Pittsburgh to record more guitar, bass, and overdubbing other instruments, followed by editing and mixing. Very exciting! Stay tuned, I'll keep you posted as progress continues.
