From our President

Happy New Year and greetings to all the members of Latimer Art Club, the oldest art club in Nevada in its 99th year! I look forward to seeing you all at meetings, art exhibits and paint outs during the year and hope to get to know the newer members very soon. I won’t be doing art lessons each newsletter as Eileen did in the past – I’m way too new to watercolor painting to presume to teach you new techniques. I’m still learning myself!

2020 will be a busy year for us. The February 8th meeting is our annual min-iature painting exchange and I hope we have many participants this year. Bring a matted or framed miniature and enter the double blind drawing. If you bring one, you’ll get to take one home for your own collection. My first year in Latimer, I won a Mary Chadwell! Well, she’s not longer with us but we have wonderful artists in our club and I encourage everyone to partici-pate in this long-standing tradition. I know we’ll have an exciting time with the drawing.

This year we’re running up to our 100th year Celebration. In 2021 we’re hoping to help celebrate the publication of a new book on Lati-mer by Jack Bacon in conjunction with a Latimer and his students’ show at the Nevada Museum of Art. I’m sure we’ll have many other festivities during the year to help us celebrate. You will be asked to share ideas, help make decisions and help in planning various activ-ities so think about it before the February meeting.

Eileen Fuller as our Show Chair will be announcing upcoming exhibit opportunities open to Latimer members and Carol Grigus will have paint out information. If you have suggestions of sites to paint as a group, please let her know. Carol Foldvary Anderson will share in-formation about upcoming speakers and programs for our April, June, August, and October meetings. We’ve decided the December meeting is busy enough with the potluck and hand-made ornament exchange so we’ll forgo a speaker in December.

If you’re reading this, you’re reading your newsletter so go ahead and peruse the Treasurer’s Report and the Secretary’s minutes from December. We always need to be sure our members are current with our finances and that our records are correct.

I look forward to spending this new year as your President. Please let me know if you have concerns, questions (only ones that I can answer, please), of ideas for the future of our wonderful Latimer Art Club. See you February 8th!

On Course

Carol A. Evans, Vice-President

2019 was a year of achievements and set the pace for 2020. LAC greeted 10 new members and hosted several outstand-ing exhibits. Many members participated, earned awards and sold artwork. I enjoyed plein air experiences coordinated by Carol Grigus and Marjee Smith, three-hour adventures that forced me to paint faster and smarter. I was amazed how some artists completed a painting on-site. At Washoe Lake three wild horses served as art critics and admired our lunch-es. Please join your colleagues and paint in a picturesque, seasonal setting. New Year’s challenges: Our Club needs to increase membership via web marketing and community awareness. You’ve heard: Half of success is just showing up. Group participation inspires motivation (I first became an Associate member – thanks to Deborah Rife’s invitation to come as her guest in 2018). As artists you meet people at all levels of interest. Wel-come prospective members to join us for camaraderie and inspiration. Susan Christopher, LAC Membership Chair, reflects that the Club encourages members of various ambitions. “This oppor-tunity needs to be promoted to attract more artists and younger artists.” She also suggested a short bio in the newsletter to recognize each new member’s background. For 2020 let’s strive for “Every member invite a new member.” Remember, LAC offers an Associate Membership ($20 per year) for individuals who want to be Club supporters, and will receive newsletters and announcements.

Information you are accustomed to finding will be in the NEW website along with a few new features including: A special page for members to display their art in a new ARTIST PAGE: and a section to pay your memberships dues and LAC show fees on line. We are very excited to get this project started and I want to thank you all in advance for your patience as we transition to the NEW website.

“O beautiful for spacious skies,

For amber waves of grain,

For purple mountain majesties

Above the fruited plain!

America! America!

God shed his grace on thee

And crown thy good with brotherhood

From sea to shining sea!

O beautiful for pilgrim feet

Whose stern impassioned stress

A thoroughfare of freedom beat

Across the wilderness!

America! America!

God mend thine every flaw

Confirm thy soul in self-control

Thy liberty is law!

O beautiful for heroes proved

In liberating strife

Who more than self their country loved

And mercy more than life!

America! America!

May God thy gold refine

Till all success be nobleness

And every gain divine!

O beautiful for patriot dream

That sees beyond the years

Thine alabaster cities gleam

Undimmed by human tears!

America! America!

God shed his grace on thee

And crown thy good with brotherhood

From sea to shining sea!”

We are excited to have “booked” the Wilbur May Museum for July for our Artown show, “America the Beautiful”. I should have more details ironed out shortly, like entry date and times, reception date, take-down, BUT don’t let that stop you for getting going on art for this show. I am giving you the words to the song to help you get those creative juices flowing:

So there is a lot to work with, interpret, use or not. We will want some EARLY IMAGES to get the publicity going with the museum and Artown, so send those to me ASAP at ([email protected])

Ideas for a title, judge, and prize solicitation are now also needed for the statewide miniature show in October. Let’s discuss at the next meeting, or send via email at the address above. HAPPY PAINTING!

Don't Be Scammed!

by Valerie P. Cohen

Skilled scammers are targeting artists all over this country, especially artists with websites. I have been approached sev-

eral times of late. I swallowed the first one hook, line, and sinker. I was incredibly humiliated when I realized that I had

not recognized clues. How could I have been so trusting, naive, and ignorant? I will relate that experience briefly, then

tell you how to spot a fraud.

The first email from "Kim Tony" said she had seen my website and was interested in seeing more available images.

There ensued ten emails back and forth, during which she chose to purchase three paintings. She gave an address in San

Antonio, TX. (I did look up that house on Zillow, and noticed that it had sold quite recently. I also looked up her name,

and found that a Kim Tony was an attorney in San Antonio.)

A cashier's check arrived in the mail, signed by Kim's husband. I did think it weird, that the check was for twice the price

total I had quoted. But I believed that cashier's checks were 100% legitimate. I deposited it in my bank account and then

shipped the paintings.

A week later, US Bank told me that that check was "Altered/Fictitious." That was the end of that. I wept, to have lost

paintings to someone who didn't care. I formally reported my complaint to the US Postal Inspectors' Criminal Investiga-

tions Service Center in Chicago IL, along with voluminous evidence -- and of course have heard nothing from them in

three months.

Eerie postscript: three weeks later, my crates were returned to my house via FedEx. Each had been opened, its painting

removed, then repacked even more carefully than I had done. There was no charge, no name.

Following are some obvious clues, derived from my mistakes, but most clearly identified in a blog written by the Califor-

nia artist Kathleen McMahon. You can find McMahon's blog via Google: art scammer names from Kathleen McMahon:

First you will receive a short email saying that the person is interested in purchasing paintings. If you answer, they know

that your address is active.

The person will claim to have seen your work in various places, and will sound as if you have common interests and ex-

periences; your website's bio, lists of shows and awards and books illustrated, will give the scammer all information they

need.

After several exchanges, the scammer will ask if a painting is "available" and its price. The emailer might mix up titles of

paintings. A true danger signal is if they offer to buy 3 or 5 paintings (a real collector does not do that).

It is extremely common, that the payment is much larger than the amount due. The "customer" wants you to reimburse

them the difference.

All types of payment can be fraudulent: checks, certified checks, cashiers checks, USPS money orders, Western Union,

credit cards, even through a Pay Pal account if you have one. Do not ship artwork until you are absolutely certain the

payment is legitimate, which can take weeks. MacMahon lists ways to find out what you need to know.

Finis.

Valerie is a watercolor painter and former LAC member.
