Term Two 2020

Dear Families,

Our students are now back to school, and it’s great to see them enjoying each other’s company and reconnecting. We are still not meeting together as a whole school in Chapels, Assemblies, and House Competitions, which is missed. These whole school activities are really important in developing our school culture through encouraging and celebrating what is good and worthy of pursuing. I look forward to the further easing of restrictions in the future. Despite this, we have much to be thankful for when we consider the impact that the Coronavirus has had on communities around the world.

As we emerge from these ‘unprecedented’ circumstances, whilst we wouldn’t choose these circumstances, there are silver linings that can come from these tough times. James Chapter 1 tells us to “count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience.” We are encouraged to see trials and challenges as a time where God can work in our lives for good.

There seems to be this principle that runs through life; tough times aren’t pleasant, but there always seems to be a silver lining if we adopt a positive mindset through the testing period. I asked our staff the other day what the silver linings were. There were multiple answers; new technology skills, students developing self-discipline, collaborating in new ways with fellow staff and students, and many others. If nothing else, I hope we have a renewed appreciation for the relationships that we can have with people, as well as being able to live in a peaceful and prosperous country that can adapt and respond to a crisis. In all of this I thank God for His goodness to us. I really do believe we are blessed.

We have been investigating commencing a daily student bus run to Tara. Currently, our boys Boarding is full and a number of families from the Tara area are seeking enrolment. Our intention is to start a marketing campaign in the area with a view to commencing this service at the start of 2021.

Our Enrichment Building has been slow to get out of the ground with a hold up in the piers. Some initial drainage work has been completed and we look forward to things proceeding in the near future.

God bless,

Welcome back to Term 2! It’s been an interesting last couple of months and while some students were only away for the Easter holidays, many have not been on campus since some time in March. We know that for families this time has been very difficult and that with varying circumstances there have been different levels of engagement with the online materials provided. This has led to a situation where we have students returning to class with a range of different progression points. Please speak to your class teachers to help them understand any issues that need addressing

We also recognise that for many families this has been a rather stressful time and dealing with an uncertain environment can have an impact on family members’ social and emotional wellbeing. Even as we start to return to normal activities there is possibly a long way to go yet before the full impact of recent events is felt. Please, keep us informed of any further issues that arise or any situations for which you would like prayer.

CHANGES TO SCHOOL EVENTS

As you would probably be aware, many of our College events have been cancelled, and even with the return to classes, there are many events that were scheduled to occur this term and next that may not proceed. Regular Assembly and Chapel services have been cancelled, with students participating in online Chapel services in form classes. And the Year 11/12 Camp scheduled for Week 10 has been cancelled. We are hopeful that the Track & Field Carnival, scheduled for the last day of term, will proceed. We will keep families informed on the progress of all events as more information becomes available.

EXAM BLOCK

We will be having an exam block for students in Years 7 to 11 from Monday to Thursday of Week 9 this term.

Year 12 students will have their normal class schedule for these days and will be continuing with their learning during this time. Students in Years 7 to 11 are only required to be at school when they have an exam scheduled. An exam timetable and letter explaining the process will be issued to students at the beginning of Week 8.

UNIFORM

Given that many students have been away for a time period equal to or greater than the Christmas holidays, I feel it worth re-iterating a few key uniform requirements:

• Students are not to wear the fleece jumper unless they have the College jumper underneath. In other words, student should not be wearing just the fleece jumper.

• Students should not be wearing nail polish or makeup to school.

• Students’ hair is to be as per the guidelines in the handbook, which in its simplest form: off the eyebrows, off the ears and off the collar (for boys).

• Students need to bring their hat and have it with them at morning tea and lunch.

I’d like to conclude by encouraging us all to show kindness to one another during this time, as we should at all times. With nearly all students back at school now, we look forward to continuing to build a happy and fruitful environment for all students to enjoy learning together.

God bless,

WELCOME BACK

It has been good to see everyone back on campus and in their classes. Teachers are enjoying being in front of their classes again and are working hard on re-establishing routines and procedures as well as determining where everyone is up to in their learning.

A very big thankyou to parents who have had the responsibility of online learning. We have appreciated your efforts and dedication.

If during ’learning at home’ you have noticed something about your child’s learning that you have concerns about, we would encourage you to contact your class teacher to discuss this further.

REPORTS

Despite the circumstances of schooling over the past weeks, end of semester reports will be emailed to parents at the beginning of the holidays. The reports will be slightly modified to ensure that teachers are reporting on what has been taught and assessed during our unusual semester.

Most subjects will have an achievement grade, but English and Mathematics will not have a specific comment attached as is our normal practice. However, the general comment at the end of the report may include some comments for English and Mathematics.

The report, even in the modified format, should give a clear picture of your child’s achievements. We will return to our normal format for Semester 2.

PREMIER’S READING CHALLENGE

Just a reminder that the Reading Challenge is open and concludes on the 28th August. This challenge encourages children to read or be read (depending on the age) as many books as possible. If you do not have a form or need an additional form please let your class teacher know.

TUTORING

Tutoring will recommence on Wednesday 3rd June. Years 3-6 English is with Mr Gibbs and Years 3-6 Mathematics is with Mrs Shakespeare in their respective class rooms.

HELPING CHILDREN WITH ANXIETY

Helping Kids with Anxiety: Strategies to Help Anxious Children

Childhood anxiety can worsen as children grow. How can you help your child manage anxiety on their

own?

Article by: Katie Hurley, LCSW

When childhood anxiety is heightened, it’s natural for parents to go into protection mode. Parents may attempt to solve problems for the child, help their child avoid triggers of anxiety, and/or try to engineer a worry-free lifestyle. While there are certain accommodations that can help anxious children in

5

Primary Schoolthe classroom, and it’s a good idea to slow the daily pace to decrease overall stress for anxious children, parents cannot protect their kids from experiencing anxiety. What they can do is help their children learn to manage anxiety.

Set Clear Expectations

It’s important to have similar expectations for anxious children that you have for non-anxious children. However, it can also be helpful to proceed at a slower pace and make some accommodations. While your other kids likely want to attend every birthday party, your anxious child probably wants to avoid them all. In this situation, it may be helpful to attend small parties that don’t include overwhelming triggers (bounce houses, loud music, lack of structure/supervision).

Setting clear expectations and helping your child create appropriate benchmarks to meet those expectations teaches your child that she/he can work through anxious feelings and manage their anxiety.

Let Your Child Worry

No child ever stopped worrying because a parent said, “Don’t worry!”, or “Relax!”. In fact, worry serves an important function in our lives. Without some amount of worry, we wouldn’t stop to consider actual dangers that do threaten us. Give your child uninterrupted time with you each day to vent worries and brainstorm solutions together.

Avoid Avoidance

Just like telling your child not to worry won’t make those anxious thoughts disappear, avoiding triggers of anxiety won’t help your child learn to cope. If your

child becomes anxious around dogs, for example, crossing the street each time you encounter a dog or staying away from all dogs will only validate that anxious thought. It sends the message that all dogs are dangerous. It’s better to desensitise your child to triggers of anxiety by taking small steps. Try looking at pictures of different breeds online and talking about what feelings they trigger. Next, watch dogs at play at a dog park from a safe distance. Finally, ask to visit with a calm, older dog of a friend or a therapy dog. By taking small steps, kids can learn to work through their fears and worries.

Practice Reframing

The anxious thought cycle is overwhelming because it causes feelings of helplessness. When anxiety spikes, children get caught in a cycle of “what ifs” and “I can’ts.” Anxious kids tend to engage in a variety of cognitive distortions such as black and white thinking and overgeneralising. Carving out regular time to work on positive reframing empowers your anxious child to take control over his anxious thoughts. It works like this:

Name a worry floating around in your brain right now.

• What is the worry telling you?• Let’s break it down and see if that worry is

100% right.• How can we take that worry thought and

change it to a positive thought?

For example, your child voices a fear that the kids in their class don’t like them. Why do they think this? Because a boy in class laughed when they didn’t know the answer, and now they are scared that their classmates think they are dumb. Help them

Page 6: From our PrincipalFrom our Principal Term Two 2020 Dear Families, Our students are now back to school, and it’s great to see them enjoying each other’s company and reconnecting

6

Primary Schoolbreak down the reality of their situation: “I answer questions in class every day. A friend always sits with me at lunch. I play with my friends at recess.” Now reframe the situation: “It hurt my feelings when the boy laughed, but I have other good friends in my class.”

Help Them Build a Coping Kit

If you want to empower your child to work through his worries, you have to help him learn a variety of coping skills. One thing that helps anxious kids is having a concrete list of strategies to use in a moment of anxiety. While some can memorise a list of strategies, others might need to write them down.

Try these:

• Deep breathing• Progressive muscle relaxation• Stress ball• Write it out• Talk back to worries and reframe thoughts• Get help from an adult

Get Back to Basics

Your anxious child doesn’t need to play every sport and attend every party, but they do need to slow down and focus on their basic health needs:

• Sleep• Healthy meals• Plenty of water• Downtime to decompress• Outdoor free play• Daily exercise (think riding bikes, playing at

the park, etc.)

Empathise Often

Anxiety can be paralysing for young children. When kids feel completely overwhelmed by anxious thoughts, they struggle to do everyday things like attend school or go to soccer practice. Anxious children even avoid fun things like play dates and movies. It’s important to empathise with your child. This normalises what they experience and helps them understand that they aren’t alone, and you will guide them through it.

7

It is very exciting to see all of the children returning after their time away. We also welcome back Mrs Kuhl and welcome Mrs Alison Gibbs who commenced work as our second Pre Prep teacher this week. It is great to have her as a part of our team.

CHANGES

Our ELC has been going through some changes of late with the aim for continual improvement, to give the best care we can and to prepare children for transition into schooling. We value feedback and if there is anything that you think needs our attention, we would appreciate you letting us know. To keep you up to date with what has been happening I have listed some of our changes below.

Groups/Classes

During school hours we now have 3 distinct groups who are accommodated in 3 different rooms, but still have access to the same outdoor area.

• Kindy

These are the 2 ½ - 4 years children who are based in the Echidna room. This room is lead by Mrs Rossow with the support of Mrs Kuhl.

• Pre Prep

This group is now operating in 2 class groups Pre Prep A (Mrs Willett) and Pre Prep B (Mrs Gibbs). Both classes will be running the same transition to school program, but the programs may vary in some areas depending on the interests and investigations of the children in each class.

• After School Care

After school care has now been split into 2 groups, the school age group and the pre-school age group. These groups will be split until approximately 5:00pm when our groups usually decrease in size.

Notice Board– ‘What Are We Learning?’

You can now catch up with what students are learning by what is on this notice board. Through pictures and information you will be able to see what students have just learnt about in the last week and what the planned learning is for the coming week.

Storypark

It has been very encouraging to see families accept invitations to join Storypark. It is something that keeps you up to date with learning and activities at the Centre on a daily basis. Parents also have the opportunity to invite extended family to be a part of their child’s journey. We lalso ove seeing pictures of children posted by families of what their child gets up to when they are away from us.

Class Starting Time

There is now a set time of 8:45am when our Pre Prep program commences. Children will be taken out of the playground and will be in their room ready to commence their program. I would encourage you endeavour to have your child at the Centre by this time so that they don’t miss out on what is planned for the day.

Eating Routine

Children in all groups of the Centre now have established routine times for eating morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea.

Bags

We are looking at going back to having all children bring their own backpack each day. If you would like to contribute to the discussion on this please go to the Community section of Storypark.

END OF SEMESTER REPORTS

The Pre Prep groups will be receiving an end of semester report within the next few weeks. These

will be emailed to you and if you have any questions about anything on your child’s progress please talk to your class teacher.

Devotion

An Attitude Adjustment (3)

'See his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take." Proverbs 3:6

When it comes to having the right attitude – stay in touch with the control tower. Air traffic controllers ‘see the big picture’ when it comes to what’s going on in the sky. They have the knowledge and authority to tell pilots to slow down or speed up, fly higher or lower, avoid or navigate through storms, or take alternative routes. Amazingly, air traffic controllers in the UK handle over 2.5 million flights each year – an average of around 7,000 every day. In fact, their busiest day on record was 5th July 2019, when they handled 8,863 flights! They manage commercial flights, private aviation, military, and cargo air traffic, as well as air taxis and airport vehicles. With so many flights taking off and landing every minute, pilots have to stay in touch with the control tower. Similarly, you must stay in touch with God – the One who sees the

big picture for your life and orchestrates everything that involves you. He makes sure everything that needs to happen, happens at the right time, and moves at the appropriate speed to make sure you arrive safely at the destination He’s planned for you. That’s why staying in communication with God should be at the top of your daily to-do list. He will help you navigate the ups and downs of life, and find your way through cloudy days when you can’t see the next step you need to take. In short, when you ‘seek his will in all you do…he will show you which path to take’.

DIGITAL CHAPEL

Our weekly school chapel services have moved online for the time being.

This term we are looking at “The Kingdom of God”. Jesus often spoke about the Kingdom of God and told many stories to illustrate what it is about.

You are welcome to follow along with the talks on the private DCC Chapel YouTube playlist at https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLyPrMgtDEGPYe8Rv0nWNr9dJ_zw6G7Vvu

Primary choir students were given the option this term to join in making a Virtual Choir. Everyone was emailed home a copy of the words, and the backing track for the song 'You Are My All in All'. After some time to practice, students recorded themselves singing and sent it back to me. I then worked on putting all the videos together to make it sound like we were together.

We had 11 children take part, from Grade 1 all the way up to Grade 6. It was a lot of fun. Thanks parents and students for being involved!

Learner link has been a key area for school learning, and has opened the option of adding a ‘course’ called “Year Group Levels– Whole School 4-12”. All students from Year 4 have this on their dashboard, and parents have access to view this as well. It is a work in progress (there is a lot of information to add), so pages will open gradually with basic information.

DCC Track & Field Carnival

Some extra information on the Track & Field Carnival has been added to the learner.link pages. Nominations on learner.link should be in now and I will be following up with those students who have not nominated.

The Carnival is set for the last day of Term 2, but will only proceed on this date if restrictions are eased to enable us to run this event, otherwise we’ll look to have it in Term 3.

Track & Field Training

Tuesday and Thursday afternoons (3:30 to 4:15 pm) have been set aside for field events training for the remainder of term for students Years 4-12. The schedule for training is:

• Tuesday – Long jump (yrs 4-12), shot put (yrs 4-12) and high jump (yrs 4-7).

• Thursday – Long jump (yrs 4-12), discus (yrs 4-12) and high jump (yrs 8-12).

Boot Camp

This will start up again in Term 3. Look out for information on this in the future.

Q Academy - Touch

DCC is hosting the Q Academy for Touch on Tuesday afternoons next term.

It is run by Qld Touch and has been run across some prestige schools and regional Touch in Qld. It is an awesome opportunity to learn or refine some of the higher level skills of touch. More details to come.

Secondary All Schools Touch

The latest information received from the Convenor is that the carnival is going ahead in it’s current format. Training will start next term.

Primary All Schools Touch

Trials will happen next term and the team will be finalised. Training will happen then as well.

Friday Afternoon Sport

Term 2 Friday Sport is Athletics training. Students will be with the same teacher for the next two weeks. Check Week 7 of Term 2 Sport on learner.link for further details. 400m and 1500m events for the carnival will happen on a Friday afternoon near the end of term.

EDUCATION PERFECT LANGUAGE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS- MR PERRIOTTE

From May 14 to May 21 College Spanish students competed in our third year of the Education Perfect Language World Championship. This year we achieved our best results and rankings. Our Spanish students earned 34 certificates of achievement from Credit to Emerald, our highest collection. Fourteen of these certificates were earned by Years 5 & 6 students for whom there was not the obligation of compulsory participation that was part of online learning expectations for Years 7-8 Spanish classes. A special mention of a couple of students, Joshua Keyte and Hayley Curd for their efforts in earning our first Emerald Certificates for the competition this year. Joshua ranked in the top 17 students in the world for Spanish from more than 150, 000 students worldwide, 9th in Australia for Spanish and 1st in Spanish for Queensland. Hayley ranked in the top 60 students in the world for Spanish, 27th in Australia for Spanish and 5th in Queensland for Spanish. Our rankings for the 2020 Language World Championship were as follows:

• 1st for Spanish in Australia 101-250 students category out of 180 schools• 1st for Spanish in QLD 101-250 students category out of 46 schools• 2nd for Spanish in QLD out of 218 schools• 2nd for Spanish globally for 101-250 students category out of 293 schools• 4th for Spanish in Australia out of 900 schools• 11th for Spanish globally out of 1378 schools

What should be noted is that most, and in some cases all, schools that were ranked above us had enrolments of students in the competition for Spanish of around 1,000 students up to more than 2,000 compared to our 144 students enrolled. In addition to this, I can look at the ‘average’ for the school for the amount of students we have divided by our enrolment in the competition and we outrank the schools with significantly higher enrolments on average to rank #1 because of our high participation of students compared other schools.

I am extremely proud of our Spanish students for their efforts in the 2020 Education Perfect Language World Championship. Their inspired enthusiasm, commitment, pride and diligence for Spanish language learning and pride in Dalby Christian College as a learning community has been undoubtedly demonstrated in this year’s Language World Championship results, personally and collectively.

God bless you and God be praised for the College’s students’ results in the 2020 Education Perfect Language World Championship.

Families leaving the College are asked to notify the College and complete a departure form ASAP.
