From Our Administrator’s

In three days, we as a church will celebrate a very exciting day, Ash Wednesday, the day that begins our Lenten journey of forty days and forty nights. It is a time of increased prayer, fasting and, almsgiving as well as a time of self-reflection, renewal and, repentance. After this Sunday the Alleluia and the Gloria, our hymn of praise to God, will be silenced as we enter into the desert and come face to face with our sinfulness and strengthen our resolve to never give up our fight against sin and evil. When Lent is described like this, we may say to ourselves, “Why is this such an exciting season?” This Wednesday we will be marked with a sign of our mortality, reminding us that here, we do not live forever. We will one day stand before the judgement seat of Christ and have to account for our sins and failures. Lent invites us to ready ourselves for that moment. In order to allow ourselves to be healed and renewed by Christ we need to recognize our problems. Lent is a time offered to us by the Church to identify our sins and weaknesses so that we can work all year round in allowing the divine physician to begin and continue His healing process.

This weekend you may have noticed my absence, I am currently away from the parish taking some time off before the busyness of Lent begins. I will be back Tuesday right in time for Ash Wednesday. One of my favorite pastimes that I enjoy while away is “day dreaming.” During this week I have been thinking to myself about some of the things that we need to strengthen in our parish. Immediately the sacraments of healing come to my mind. During this Lenten season at St. John Chrysostom we are going to focus on the great necessity of the sacrament of reconciliation and the anointing of the sick. All of us are hungry for the healing touch of Jesus Christ but prior to experience His healing power we need to present him our infirmities. How can we present him our infirmities if we are unaware of them? Moreover, if we want to show mercy to the sick and the dying, are we aware of the importance of calling for a priest to administer the sacrament of reconciliation and anointing of the sick to give our sick brothers and sisters the strength to accept the divine will of God? I know I speak for all of us when I echo my deep love for our incredible parish of St. John Chrysostom. In order to show that love we need to be a caring community that reaches out to one another in Christ. What better way to do so than experiencing the transforming power of God in the sacraments and then inviting others to do the same? When we practice our faith and when we receive the sacraments frequently, we become more capable to preach the power of the sacraments because we become first hand witnesses of the amazing power that they contain. We cannot give what we do not have. If we know the love of Christ then we can share it. If we experience the mercy of God then we can be people of mercy. If we want to show the world the way to heaven, we need to introduce them to the Holy Catholic Church. Our great joy in receiving the forgiveness of God will attract many to want to experience it as well. Yes, Lent is a time of excitement, because as we enter into the desert, and as we reflect on our sinfulness and weaknesses, we grow closer to Christ and to one another. En tres días, nosotros como iglesia celebraremos un día muy emocionante, el Miércoles de Ceniza,

el día que comienza nuestro viaje de Cuaresma de cuarenta días y cuarenta noches. Es un tiempo de mayor

oración, ayuno y limosna, así como un tiempo de auto reflexión, renuevo y arrepentimiento. Después de

este domingo, el Aleluya y la Gloria, nuestro himno de alabanza a Dios, serán silenciados cuando entremos

en el desierto y nos encontremos cara a cara con nuestra pecaminosidad y fortalezcamos nuestra resolución

de no abandonar nuestra lucha contra el pecado y el mal.

Cuando la Cuaresma se describe de esta manera, podemos decirnos a nosotros mismos:

"¿Por qué es una temporada tan emocionante?" Este miércoles estaremos marcados con un signo de

nuestra mortalidad, recordándonos que aquí no vivimos para siempre. Un día estaremos ante el tribunal de

Cristo y tendremos que dar cuenta de nuestros pecados y fracasos. La Cuaresma nos invita a prepararnos

para ese momento. Para permitirnos ser sanados y renovados por Cristo, necesitamos reconocer nuestros

problemas. La Cuaresma es un tiempo que nos ofrece la Iglesia para identificar nuestros pecados y

debilidades, de modo que podamos trabajar durante todo el año para permitir que el médico divino

comience y continúe su proceso de curación.

Es posible que este fin de semana haya notado mi ausencia. Actualmente, estoy lejos de la

parroquia y me tomo un tiempo libre antes de que comience la actividad de la Cuaresma. Regresaré el

martes justo a tiempo para el Miércoles de Ceniza. Uno de mis pasatiempos favoritos que disfruto

mientras estoy fuera es "soñar despierto". Durante esta semana, he estado pensando en algunas de las cosas

que necesitamos fortalecer en nuestra parroquia. Inmediatamente me vienen a la mente los sacramentos de

la curación. Durante esta temporada de Cuaresma en San Juan Crisóstomo, nos centraremos en la gran

necesidad del sacramento de la reconciliación y la unción de los enfermos. Todos nosotros estamos

hambrientos por el toque sanador de Jesucristo, pero antes de experimentar su poder sanador necesitamos

presentarle nuestras enfermedades. ¿Cómo podemos presentarle nuestras debilidades si no las

conocemos? Además, si queremos mostrar misericordia a los enfermos y moribundos, somos conscientes

de la importancia de pedir a un sacerdote que administre el sacramento de la reconciliación y la unción de

los enfermos para darles a nuestros hermanos y hermanas enfermos la fuerza para aceptar la voluntad

divina. de Dios?

Sé que hablo por todos nosotros cuando hago eco de mi profundo amor por nuestra increíble

parroquia de San Juan Crisóstomo. Para mostrar ese amor, necesitamos ser una comunidad solidaria que

nos ayude unos a otros en Cristo. ¿Qué mejor manera de hacerlo que experimentar el poder

transformador de Dios en los sacramentos y luego invitar a otros a hacer lo mismo? Cuando practicamos

nuestra fe y cuando recibimos los sacramentos con frecuencia, somos más capaces de predicar el poder de

los sacramentos porque nos convertimos en testigos directos del asombroso poder que contienen. No

podemos dar lo que no tenemos. Si conocemos el amor de Cristo, entonces podemos compartirlo. Si

experimentamos la misericordia de Dios, entonces podemos ser personas de misericordia. Si queremos

mostrarle a nuestro mundo el camino al cielo, necesitamos presentarlos a la Santa Iglesia Católica. Nuestra

gran alegría al recibir el perdón de Dios atraerá a muchos a querer experimentarlo también.

Sí, la Cuaresma es un momento de emoción, porque al entrar en el desierto y al reflexionar sobre

nuestros pecados y debilidades, nos acercamos más a Cristo y al prójimo.
