Have any of you run into Japanese beetles? This is my first summer to experience them. They have been eating my garden in our backyard that I have worked so hard to cultivate. Initially I knocked them of the leaves of my vegetables into a bucket of soapy water. This was just the beginning of my war on beetles as I soon realized I could spend my whole vacation attempting to stop these pesky insects from making a salad of my garden. I then went to the Internet and discovered traps that can be put up

that will attract and kill this beetle. I then followed those leads to Home Depot and Lowes only to discover, much to my frustration, that neither of them carried these traps. Finally I ordered a trap on amazon and it arrived in a few days. It has proven quite effective in helping to rescue my garden, although I still have found some beetles on the leaves of our plants.

Several members of my family were a bit frustrated with my obsession over these little critters. And looking back I realize they were more than correct.

Have you ever found yourself distracted by something, maybe paying too much attention to something that ultimately has very little importance? People might even tell you that you are worrying too much.

Yes my garden has some value, but what if I put as much energy into my relationship with my family as I did with these beetles from a faraway country? What if I put that much energy and time into my relationship with God?

God has some very clear words about what we tend to obsess over.“And don’t be concerned about what to eat and what to drink. Don’t worry about such things. These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers all over the world, but your Father already knows your needs. Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and he will give you everything you need.” Luke 12:29-31

It is easy for me to justify my preoccupation over things. But truthfully it becomes a sin called worry. Jesus is telling us here, and in many other places in scriptures, that worry is not just counterproductive, but that it is the opposite of trust. It leads us down a dark path away from God and each other. One suggestion to consider in your fight against worry is join our Emotionally Healthy Spiritually Class, being taught by Pastor Ed Black, beginning on Sunday September 11th. It will deepen and strengthen your relationship with God, which in turn will make an enormous difference in your level of worry and anxiety.

May God be close as we let go of our worry and embrace our Savior.

I Saw the Lord: A Wake-Up Call for Your Heartby Anne Graham Lotz

When we call ourselves Christians, we expect that our love for Jesus, our hunger for His presence, our urgent longing to see Him again will be a constant, motivating force in our lives, writes Anne Graham Lotz. Yet sometimes ... in the busyness of our days or the duties of our jobs or the familiar habits of our worship or the everyday routine of our homes, the longing becomes complacency, and we sleep through opportunities to be with Him. Anne knows from personal experience that it’s then, as we’re drifting in comfortable complacency, that we most need a wake-up call--a jolt that pushes us to seek out a revival of our passion for Jesus that began as a

blazing fire but somehow has died down to an ineffective glow. The revival we need now is not a tent meeting or a series of church services designed to save the lost. It’s something completely different: authentic, personal revival. In I Saw the Lord, Anne shares the revival lessons she has carried to audiences throughout the world, showing you how you can experience an authentic, deeper, richer relationship with God in a life-changing, fire-blazing revival. It begins here. Now. Open this book and hear the wake-up call. Then get ready for the fire of revival to fall ... on you!

Any questions, please call Joan Tupper 303-422-1378 or Sally Johnson 303-399-3153

Help needed!Joan Tupper, our long-time church Treasurer, is retiring after this year. CORONA NEEDS SOMEONE TO STEP UP AND TAKE OVER THIS IMPORTANT JOB. Plenty of training will be provided.

The job requires 4-6 hours per week at church and attendance at the monthly Trustee meeting the first Tuesday of each month. You will have an assistant to help with the weekly processing. You’ll quickly become one of the most popular and sought after personalities at Corona! (Because you’ll be handing out all those reimbursement and payroll checks). Contact Joan and/or Steve Hall for more information.

There are many ways you can volunteer at our church. Some are scheduled, some are ‘jump-in and help out.’ Below are a few ways you can help:

Greeter: Say hello to folks as they enter on Sunday mornings at the Downing Street doors. If they aren’t sure where to go next, help them find the sanctuary. Contact Carol Hearn or Linda Jackmond if you would like to do this.

Ushers: Greet people as they enter the sanctuary and hand them a bulletin. Pass the offering plate during service and make sure the pews are clean after the service. Can be one Sunday a month. Volunteer with a spouse or friend or on your own. Contact: Carol Hearn.

Sound and Projector Team:Run the sound and/or projection system during Sunday worship. You can volunteer once a month for Sunday worship, or the occasional event in the Multi. Contact Steve Hall.

Worship Associate: Lead responsive readings and say prayers during the service with the pastor. Can be scheduled once a month or quarterly. Contact Nancy in the office.

Fellowship Time:Serve coffee and treats during the fellowship hour. If you would like to help with coffee fellowship on Sunday mornings please see Carol Hearn or Linda Jackmond and they will put you to work! They promise you’ll have fun and meet a lot of people!

Decorating Committee:The Trustees have established a standing decorating committee to deal with various decorating projects around the church. Some have been done, as you may have seen, but there are more on the horizon. The Committee is accepting new members, if you are interested contact Deanna Geiter or Steve Hall.

“So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.” Galatians 6:10

Keep Your Social Security Number Safe Social Security came into being 81 years ago this month, and the Social Security number followed a year later. From dumpster diving to data breaches, thieves have come up with many ways to try to steal our numbers since then.

What You Should Know:

• Leave your card at home – preferably in a locked safe, when you don’t need it with you. • Shred documents that contain your Social Security number. Buy a crosscut shredder if you don’t have one yet; they start at about $30 online or in office supply stores. • Don’t give out your Social Security number over the phone, especially if you didn’t initiate the call. Also beware of anyone asking for your Social Security number by email. It may be an imposter posing as your bank or the government. • Know to whom you are providing your number and how they will use it. Sometimes you will need to provide your Social Security number to a financial institution or insurance company. But if you are not sure, ask why you need to provide it, how it will be stored, if it will be shared with others, and what the protocols are for a data breach.

What You Should Do:

• Check your Social Security record to make sure it’s accurate. • Set up a “my Social Security account” at www.ssa.gov to review your earnings record and get an estimate of your benefits. • If you see inconsistencies, contact the Social Security Administration at 1-800-772-1213.

Be sure to share this alert with family and friends!

Sunday School:The Table will continue our study through the Gospel of John. Quoted as “shallow enough to wade in, yet deep enough to drown in,” the Gospel of John has a lot of depth to it and yet is very practical. Join the Table as we delve into this Gospel and apply it to our lives!

Youth Group:“Stepping Up” is finally done, and as we return to our school year programming, there will be more great series on the way with the help of our Orange curriculum! We also hope to be bringing on some volunteers within the next few months to help out with our upcoming new programs, and will be very excited to introduce them once the logistics are taken care of. New things are happening at The Table, so stay tuned and don’t miss out on our new programs coming soon!

Events:A slew of events are up and coming for September, including Cupcake Wars, a picnic, and other fun events! Stay tuned for more details and be on the lookout for next month’s Youth E-Letter!

It’s 1968, and Sheldon and Meg Crane have just moved their family from Pennsylvania to the small town of Black Mountain, NC. Sheldon, recently ousted from the ministry due to an illicit affair, takes a job as a used car salesman at his brother-in-law s auto dealership. Burdened by his wife’s unforgiveness and his daughter’s resentment over the move to “Barney Fife country”, Sheldon finds

a measure of solace in his eight-year-old son’s ability to cope. After settling into an old house high on the side of a mountain, the family discovers their new home is no ordinary place. Family members occasionally see and speak with the home’s previous residents ⎯ and the ones who will live there in the future. While attempting to come to terms with this portal in the past and future, their son, Digger, suddenly disappears. Was he kidnapped or did Digger wander off into the mountains and become lost? The answer lies in a place once beyond a time ⎯ in a realm where the mysterious power of forgiveness removes sorrow and heals even the most egregious sins. Group Discussion on Thursday, September 1, at 7:00pm at the home of Stephen and Rebecca Sparks located at 1020 15th Street, #12N

Mission on the Move

Corona has sent a number of talented folk to the domestic and foreign mission field. In June we had the privilege of sending three teams out to California, Juarez, Mexico, and Moldova Eastern Europe. The Missions Committee would like to now support our missionaries with more prayer.

One group has prayed for Renata and James Bultema in Turkey over a monthly lunch for about 25 years, since they participated in the life of our church while at Denver Seminary. Their ministry has extended from Istanbul to opening the International church in Antalya and a summer camp that just celebrated its 20th year. It led to the creation of a Cultural Center that hosts several other language group churches and a counseling center serving the region, not just Turkey.

To support Corona’s outreach activities, several individuals would like to start a small group to pray at least monthly for other Corona missionaries. These include, but are not limited to, Karl and Jenny Teichert in Southern Africa (who shared with us during the morning service and Sunday school in August) and Hank and Mona Paulson in the Czech Republic (Hank opened the door for the five member Corona team to go to Moldova Pearl Summer camp, where they facilitated Bible and English classes, and led crafts and sports for kids ages 5-14 who participated in the summer camp. These campers have absent parents who work outside Moldova, the poorest country in Europe and part of the former Soviet Union).

If you wish to participate in such a prayer small group, which will start in October, please contact [email protected] or another member of the Missions Committee...Steve Bock, John Walbert, or Cal Dunlap.

The time, frequency, location and format are totally open to the small group participants. But we do want to uphold our workers out there spreading the Good News.

The next luncheon for our loving care members is going to be held on September 15th, Noon until 2:00 pm in the Parlor. This luncheon will be for our 80 and 90 year olds. We will arrange carpooling and/or transportation for those who need it. Invitations will go out the end of August and we ask that you reply as indicated on the invitation. Our elderly and long-time members of Corona have a wealth of information to share with all of us. The luncheon is for the elderly – however – if anyone else in the congregation would like to come and visit a bit – you are more than welcome to come at 1:00 just to visit.

Pastor EdEmotionally Healthy Spirituality Class begins September 11 (The Sunday after Labor Day)

This late summer/fall a new 8-session class, led by Pastor Ed Black, will be a wonderful opportunity to take your discipleship in Christ to a new level.

Angela, in explaining why she had not attended church for over five years, asked privately, “Why is it that so many Christians make such lousy human beings?”

Henry, shared: “I was a Christian for twenty-two years. But instead of being a twenty-two year old Christian, I was a one-year old Christian twenty-two times! I just kept doing the same things over and over and over again.”

Nate, upon hearing the title Emotionally Healthy Spirituality laughed and said, “Emotionally healthy spirituality? Isn’t that a contradiction?”

There are many well intentioned people who strive to be Christian and live as Christians, yet have struggles with living a full orbed spirituality that honors God fully and shines forth as attractive to people that know them. They have a commitment to Christ, but have many areas of discipleship growth that have been left lagging or entirely neglected.

The Emotionally Healthy Spirituality course will help us all to work through key aspects of healthy spirituality and make good evaluations so that we can take healthy steps forward.

There is a sign-up sheet in the lobby of the church, or call the church office to express your interest in being part of this class. There are some books that we will use to enhance our progress in this discipleship journey, and those are available at the church. There is a suggested donation of $25.00 for the three books, but we don’t want anyone to hesitate from taking the class because of the cost, so give what you are able to cover the cost. You will not need to read anything before the first class, but reading as we move through the weeks together will be a great aid to your learning and discipleship.

If you are looking for a boost in your walk with the Lord, please make room in your schedule for this class. If you have questions do not hesitate to contact Pastor Ed Black at 303.903.3813

Due to the All Church Retreat and another special day, the class sessions will not be on eight consecutive Sundays but the class will wrap up before the Thanksgiving holiday. The class will run from 11:15am-12:15pm each Sunday.
