The Hardy
Heartline
Dear Church Family and Friends,
This morning as I write this article, even though it is cold outside,
warm light is streaming in through the windows of my office. Light reminds us of the presence of Christ.
Each Sunday acolytes light the candles on the altar. We will be lighting Advent Candles each Sunday.
“Let us walk in the light of the Lord…in Him was life, and the life was the light of all people, and the dark-
ness has not overcome it…O send out thy light and thy truth, let them lead me…the Lord is my light and
my salvation…Thy Word is a light to my path…believe in the light, that you may become children of the
light…
In my office, I have some very healthy potted plants that I brought over from the old location. I cut them
back but they have already grown pretty large. It is because they are watered and have the sunlight on a
daily basis. When you and I have the SON light on a daily basis, we grow as well. This Advent, I hope you
take the time to let the light of Christ feed your heart and soul, so you can walk in the light of the One
who is truly life!
See you Sunday!
Rev. Garry Masterson
FROM MICAH
Last month I wrote about depression and how it affects non-believers and how we as believers can help those folks by being
bright lights for Jesus in this world. An interesting issue was raised by the last article and was brought to my attention by a
fellow church member. How do Christians deal with issues like depression? Can a Christian really be depressed? The answer
is simple: yes, we can.
Remember that Jesus promised we would have troubles in this world. Being a Christian does not mean we are immune to
disease, sickness, or mental health issues. However, as Christians we have something the world does not have: the Holy
Spirit. God living within our hearts can give us the strength, hope, and joy we need to make it another day…especially when
we are not feeling well.
Does this mean Christians can just “believe” their way out of all sickness? Nope. God uses doctors, nurses, and other health
professionals to work in our lives just like he uses preachers and Sunday school teachers to help us understand His word. So
as we think about these issues, especially during this holiday season when depression can be an issue for many, let us be
thankful for God’s grace and mercy in our lives and for the people He places in our lives to help us deal with living in this bro-
ken world.

MISSION MOMENT
DECEMBER MISSION PROJECT: HEIFER INTERNATIONAL Heifer International’s mission is to work with communities in an effort to end world hunger and poverty. This organization
makes it possible to give families in Third World Countries a hand-up, rather than a hand-out and by doing so to turn lives of
hunger and poverty into self-reliance and hope.
Consider giving a donation to Heifer International as a Christmas gift. Donations help to provide livestock, seeds, and training
to struggling families, each gift giving an opportunity for self-reliance to a struggling family.
Your check may be made payable to Hardy Memorial United Methodist Church with notation: For Heifer International.
It’s a Charlie Brown Christmas
As part of our outreach here at Hardy, our congregation collects supplies for the Child Protective Service’s RAIN-
BOW ROOM. These items help the CPS caseworkers meet the critical needs of abused and neglected children in
our town. Collection areas are located at each of the side entrances by the balcony staircase under the Charlie
Brown Christmas trees. For the month of December, we want to help with all needs. This includes diapers, cold
weather need (gloves, socks, windbreakers, underwear, sweaters), school supplies, etc.
UMCOR School Bags for the Needy Hardy’s Mission Committee is in search of seamstresses who would like to make school bags for UMCOR Sager-Brown.
Whether you can sew or not, there is a job for you. Contact Joyce Bell, Carolyn Fant or the church office if you are interested in
this opportunity to serve.
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE GIFT-WRAPPING
Each year Texarkana’s Domestic Violence Prevention program provides a Christmas gift-
wrapping booth at Central Mall. This year Hardy’ Memorial will be wrapping from 1:00-6:00pm
on Thursday, December 16. If you would like to volunteer your time, please let the church office know. You
may designate a two-hour timeslot which is best suited to you.
SHOPPING FOR CHRISTMAS?
Remember to check out the display of “My Pan” products in the foyer. In order for us to
receive the items in time for Christmas, the deadline for ordering is Sunday, December
5. Keep in mind that proceeds from this sale will go toward Hardy’s playground equip-
ment.
COMPASSION FUND
Hardy’s Compassion Fund is very important in the life of the church. This fund helps to defray ex-
penses incurred when the church provides a meal for a bereaved family and also makes it possible
for us to help the needy. Please consider the Compassion Fund when making donations to memori-
als, etc.

A Thank You from United Methodist Women
The Hardy UMW really tipped the scale this year! It was a “bumper crop” as far as proceeds were con-
cerned. Thanks go to the entire church family for all the help. As always, it was a concerted effort un-
der the leadership of Barbara Means, who has directed this major project for twenty-one years. Pro-
ceeds will be directed to various mission projects.
Sympathy is extended to former member Louise Womack upon the death of her husband George.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
