from Linn Grove October 2016
Linn Grove Families, It is Parent/Teacher conference season as we open the month of October. Fall is one of my favorite times of the year. The last few weeks have been quite busy at Linn Grove. We have celebrated our PRIDE with the PTO sponsored Red and Black Track Attack. Thanks for your PTO donations and active participation in our evening family event. We also joined the Linn-Mar community with the Linn-Mar Homecoming Parade! It was great to have a large group participating and to see many LG families on the streets as we marched by. As we prepare for the fall parties and parade at Linn Grove I would ask that you keep a few things in mind. It is our tradition that we have a parade of costumes the day of our fall parties, Monday, October 31. It is great fun for all the kids to see each other’s costumes. We are asking that the costumes our students bring to school on the 31st are appropriate for all grade levels. (Remember we have 3 year olds to 11 year olds in our building.) Please reserve the scary costumes for out of school activities. Additionally, we are not allowing any masks to be worn at school. (We have extra costumes for students that do not have something to dress up in for the parade, please let the teacher or Mrs. Knudson know of the need.) The parade starts at 2:30 and guests should arrive before this time and enter the building through the main office area and sign in. Teachers will be touching base with parents planning classroom parties to focus on fall themes: apples, pumpkins, fall leaves, jack-o-lanterns, etc. Again, reserving the scary fun for outside of school activities. Guests are welcome to join for the fall parade in the gym. As the calendar turns to October and it is nice to stay in the warm bed at home, please keep routines and have your child at school. It is important that your child not miss
important learning opportunities. Learning begins at 8:45 and having all of our students at school by 8:40 helps to get them in their seats and ready to go at the bell! Please continue to keep your communication lines open with the classroom or the office. If at any time you have questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to give me a call or send me an email. The PBIS Post
Ever wonder what our Linn Grove red tickets are, or why they
consistently end up in your laundry each week? Well, we can’t explain
the extra lint but we can share about our PBIS (positive behavioral
intervention and supports) implementation here at Linn Grove!
Each week the PBIS team would like to share updates with you
regarding our current focus, and connections you can make with your
child at home. This week, our focus is Check In, Check Out (CICO):
- CICO is an accommodation for students who may need extra
support with behavior expectations.
- Students on CICO meet with an adult before school to ‘check in’
about how they can have a great day, and after school to ‘check
out’ how their day went. - The CICO system includes a sheet of paper where adults can give
the student feedback on how they demonstrated the three Linn
Grove expectations of being respectful, responsible, and ready to
learn.
- CICO is NOT a punishment NOR a reward, rather an
opportunity to connect with a school adult and receive feedback
on expectations.
- Data collected on students’ decision making determines who
would benefit from CICO and how long they continue.
- If using CICO does not appear effective (again according to data
rules), modifications or additional supports will be put into place.
Home Connections
If your child is on CICO, remember that it is not meant to be used for
punishment but rather support. For all students and parents, asking
your child how their day went according to the three expectations can
help open up the conversation in a focused manner.
If your child struggled with expectations at school one day, try
reminding them that tomorrow is a new day and they always get a fresh
start here at school.

In each newsletter, I will update you on the topics that your student will be learning about in the upcoming month. I am also available to work with students individually should the need arise. Please contact me at 730-3505 or by email at [email protected] if you have any questions or concerns about your child.
As you know from the informational parent nights, and hopefully your kiddo(s), we have been talking a lot about the brain and growth mindsets at Linn Grove. The focus around this philosophy is that through perseverance (not giving up) and grit (effort) you can always learn new things and become more independent thinkers. When asking about your child’s day, ask about something that was difficult or that they struggled with. Discuss the process they went through to overcome this difficulty or talk about ways they could have perservered.
Listed below are some great picture books and chapter books you could read with your child that
focus on perseverance and grit to help instill a growth
mindset in your child. Picture Books

Mrs. Karla Terry, Community Services Coordinator, [email protected]
My name is Rebecca Louison and I am the coordinator for the
America Reads day at Linn Grove. America Reads is an opportunity to
get community members into the school and reading to the students.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of this program in the Cedar
Rapids area, and it is a highlight of the school year.
We could not have this event without people like you. We are
currently seeking volunteers to read in your child(s) class (Little Lions
through 5th grade). If this is something you are interested in
volunteering for we are looking for readers to read in 15-30 minute
time slots (depending on age and teacher preference (15 min approx
for LL-1, 30 min approx for 2-5th) throughout the school day (between
9:00 and 2:50). Please contact me at
[email protected] to get more information or to
express interest in participating.
This is first come first serve, and we try to accommodate as many
people as possible. But due to differing teacher requests or available
times we might not always be able to place readers in your specific
child's classroom, but always do our best to accommodate as many
requests as possible. I thank you in advance for your patience and
understanding.
We would love to have you be part of this special day.
Sincerely,
Rebecca Louison
