Important remediation programs were initiated as of 2003.Further, Umicore published in 2006 following groupobjective :

All industrial sites are to assess the nature,extent and related risk of the impact that theircurrent and past activities are causing or have caused tosoil and groundwater. For those sites where significantrisks have been identified remedial action shouldbe initiated by the end of 2010.

• 2009: Guarulhos Municipality (PMG) had

planned to redevelop Vila Flora;

• PMG had agreed to speed up families removal

process

• Umicore contributed to social rent subsidy;

• 2012: human health risk assessment;

• Communication to community regarding removal

delay and grant extension;

• Redevelopment became unfeasible in Vila Flora;

• PMG proposed land exchange as donation;

• 260 families were removed to Pimentas

• 2015: PMG agreed to make Vila Flora into a

recreational park;

• Irregular Reoccupation concerns and potential

uncontrolled risks

• Strategy presented to the DA’s office – Public

Attorneys approved the proposition;

• 2016: CETESB also agreed since added 0.5 m of

soil on the ground;

• Additional impacts in the soil;

• Umicore to support the implementation;

Added Value:

Proposal for a alternative remediation

approach with the best cost benefit for the

area;

Effectiveness in mitigating the risks

identified in this off-site area;

Fulfilling the requests of the Environmental

Agency (CETESB), which approved the

proposed remediation alternative;

The proposed alternative besides mitigating

the risks, also improved the quality of life of

the local community (positive social impact).
