Friday, October 16: Arrive Istanbul Arrive in Turkey’s cultural and spiritual heart today and transfer to your hotel located near Taksim Square, the heart of modern Istanbul. As guests’ arrival times may vary greatly, no group activities or meals are planned. You are free to explore the area surrounding the hotel or simply relax. Dinner tonight is on your own.
Saturday, October 17: Istanbul Begin with a walking tour along lively pedestrian Istiklal Street, lined with boutiques, galleries, restaurants, and late Ottoman-era buildings. See the acclaimed mosaics and frescoes at Chora Church (now Kariye Museum) then take a panoramic drive along Istanbul’s Old City walls. Then, visit the intimate Rustem Pasha mosque, followed by the renowned Spice Market. After lunch on your own here, take a private cruise on the Bosphorus, which separates Europe from Asia. Back at your hotel, enjoy an exclusive lecture by a local expert on Turkey’s political past and present. Sunday, October 18: Istanbul Tour Old Istanbul, beginning with the ancient Roman Hippodrome, the 3,500-year-old obelisk brought from Egypt in 390 ce. Next, visit the Blue Mosque, with its 20,000 blue Iznik tiles and signature six minarets. Continue on to the renowned Museum of Turkish & Islamic Art, housing priceless artifacts from the 8th to 20th centuries. Then ferry across the Dardanelles to Troy, once believed to exist only in Homer’s epic poem until the present site was discovered in the 1870s. Wednesday, October 21: Assos/Pergamum/Izmir Explore one of Turkey’s most spectacu-lar ancient sites: windswept Pergamum, a major power in the 3rd and 2nd centuries bce, with a wealth of Hellenistic ruins. Then continue on to Izmir for the night. B,L,D
Thursday, October 22: Izmir/Ephesus Few ancient sites compare to Ephesus, the world’s best-preserved classical city which you explore today. Dating to at least 1300 bce, Ephesus was Asia Minor’s largest metropolis and principal port. From here you have the option of taking a three-hour hike to the Greco-Roman ruins at Lydea, ending at the Sunken Baths of Cleopatra. Monday, October 26: Cruising – Gemiler Island/Kayakoy Today cruise to Gemiler Island to tour its 6th-century Byzantine monastery. Tuesday, October 27: Fethiye/Antalya Cruise this morning to Fethiye, then set out by motorcoach through the Taurus Mountains for Antalya. After stopping for lunch en route, reach the seaside city mid-afternoon and visit the acclaimed Archaeological Museum. B,L
Wednesday, October 28: Antalya/Perge This morning, visit the ruins at Perge, an ancient Greek city once among the world’s prettiest and most prosperous. Then return to Antalya for a walking tour of its charming Old Town, including Hadrian’s Gate and the lovely Yivli Minare (Fluted Minaret). Bonnie Joy Kaslan, Honor- ary Consul General of the Turkish Republic, is former Executive Vice President of Kaslan Associates, Inc. Ms. Kaslan was president of the Turkish American
Association of California from 1983 to 1985 and served on the Board of Directors of the Assembly of Turkish American Associations. She is past national chairman of the Assembly’s Curriculum Committee on History and Social Science as well as past chair-man and current member of the Board of Trustees. Bonnie is very familiar with this tour, as she hosted it in 2012.
She has appeared on radio and television nationwide as an educator, advocate, and facilitator for a better understanding of Turkey and its people. She served as edu-cational consultant to the Turkish Cultural Foundation, charged with overseeing the Teachers’ Study Tours to Turkey. She con-tinues to travel nationwide on behalf of TCF programs.
