The "Salt March" to the ocean caused a great international sensation. They protested against the tax on salt. Mahatma Gandhi and his followers took only a few lumps of salt from the ocean and symbolically violated the British salt monopoly. Sixty thousand participants were arrested, Gandhi among them. This number of prisoners far exceeded the capacity of British jails.
