ABOUT THIS DOCUMENT The information included in this document is an attempt to list the family history, genealogy, and relatives of Urban E. and Sylvia A. (Steinke) Schneider. It is far from complete, as families are constantly changing through marriages and births, and new information is collected.

The information has been obtained from many different sources. Most of these sources are published family genealogies of those related to Sylvia and Urban Schneider. Most of these sources have reliable references, however, not all sources listed references. The information used is the most accurate at the time of printing, but by no means is it guaranteed to be accurate. Mistakes will be found, and changes will be made as they are discovered.

THIS DOCUMENT IS NOT INTENDED TO BE A PUBLIC RECORD. Some of the information included may be considered sensitive information, and should not be made available freely to the public. This is especially true of any living relatives. It is an acceptable practice by many genealogy organizations to list only deceased individuals. This document includes much more than that, there for it is not intended for public use.

This document is divided into four different sections, as follows: A. SCHNEIDER Genealogy B. VOISARD Genealogy C. STEINKE Genealogy D. GREVE Genealogy

Each section begins with it’s own set of page numbers. This allows additions to be more easily made without renumbering every page and reference within every section.

The following abbreviations are used pretty consistently throughout this document: b. - born d. - died bur. - buried cem. - cemetery bef. - before aft. - after m. - married m2. - second marriage Co. - county twp. - township OH - Ohio Wapak - Wapakoneta FR - France GER-Germany Ter. - Territory Bav. - Bavaria

- indicates a cemetery photo is on file for this person’s tomb stone - indicates a Death Certificate is on file for this person - indicates that this person immigrated to the United States - indicates an Obituary is on file for this person

Egenhausen is a small village in the district of Calw, in the state of Baden-Württemberg, Germany. It is located about 40 miles east of Strasbourg, France. The familiar city of Freiburg, also located in Baden-Württemberg, is about 60 miles south of Egenhausen.

The former Grand Duchy of Baden (on lower part of the map at right) bordered Elsaß-Lothringen, (which was then part of Germany, and today is Alsace-Lorraine, France). It was located along the east bank of the Rhine River, and bordered Switzerland to its south.

Egenhausen has a population of 1,880 residents (in 2011), and an elevation of 1755 feet above sea level.

A common slogan in Baden-Württemberg is: “Wir können alles. Außer Hochdeutsch.” which means "We can do anything. Except speak standard German." a reference to Baden-Württemberg being one of the principal centers for innovation in

Germany and having many inhabitants with distinctive dialects.

SCHEMMEL is an old German nickname for a disabled person, from Middle High

German schemel ‘stool’, which was used as a crutch by invalids.

POSSIBLE connections to George SCHEMMEL include Johann Adam SCHEMMEL and Conrad SCHEMMEL, both from Egenhausen. Conrad immigrated to Pusheta Township, and Johann Adam’s children immigrated to Piqua, Ohio. Many possibilities exist, but without more supporting evidence, the connection remains uncertain. There are so many similarities between the families, that I am convinced they must be closely related. But that exact relationship remains to be discovered.

POSSIBLE connections to George SCHEMMEL:

These families in BROWN are probably related to our

ancestor George SCHEMMEL (brothers?

cousins?), but no proof has yet been established, other than that they are all from

SCHEMMEL was born on November 26, 1828, in Egenhausen, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. (The 1860 US Census lists his age as 24, meaning he was born about 1836.) He was the second of nine known children born to George SCHEMMEL and Gertrude (SCHLOTTER) SCHEMMEL.

Johann George SCHEMMEL went by the name of George. He married Theresia ENGESSER on December 6, 1853 in Auglaize County. Corad SCHEMMEL was the Justice of the Peace who married them. Theresia ENGESSER was born about 1838 in Württemberg, Germany. She was the daughter of _______ and ______.

Johann George SCHEMMEL was listed as a “Saw Miller” in the 1860 Census. When his father died, he was appointed guardian of many of his brothers and sisters.

Johann George SCHEMMEL died, probably before 1880.

Theresia (ENGESSER) SCHEMMEL died, probably before 1880.

Johann George

George SCHEMMEL and Theresa ‘ENGERSON’ were married

12-6-1853 by Conrad Schemmel, who was Justice of the Peace, and

probably related.

More information on this family is in the next Chapter:

SCHEMMEL was born on February __, 1833 in Egenhausen, Baden-

Württemberg, Germany. He was the fourth of nine known children born to George SCHEMMEL and Gertrude (SCHLOTTER) SCHEMMEL.

George Adam SCHEMMEL married Barbara FRANZ (or FRANTZ) on February 1, 1860 in Auglaize County. Barbara FRANZ (or FRANTZ) was born in September of 1840 in ___, Ohio. She was the daughter of MIchael FRANTZ and Margaret WEHNER. The FRANTZ’s and WEHNER’s immigrated in 1834 and are believed to be a pert of a group known as the SCHEMMEL Immigrants.

George Adam SCHEMMEL and Barbara (FRANZ) SCHEMMEL had one known daughter around 1863. The 1870 Census shows Barbara’s uncle(?), Nicholas FRANTZ, living with them.

Barbara (FRANZ) SCHEMMEL died sometime before 1894. George Adam SCHEMMEL married to Mary Ann KELLEY in Piqua, Ohio on June 21, 1894. Mary Ann KELLEY was born on July 8, 1830 in Pennsylvania. She was the widow of Christopher REDMAN, and the daughter of James KELLY, (born in Ireland) and Elizabeth (CURTZ) KELLY, (born in Pennsylvania).

George Adam SCHEMMEL died on March 15, 1904, in Piqua, Ohio.

Children of George SCHEMMEL and Gertrude SCHLOTTER - Anthony SCHEMMEL

SCHEMMEL was born on August 11, 1835 in Egenhausen, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. He was the fifth of nine known children born to George SCHEMMEL and Gertrude (SCHLOTTER) SCHEMMEL.

Anthony SCHEMMEL was a Private in Company E, Regiment 113, of the Ohio Infantry in the Civil War. He died on August 7, 1864, during the battle at Utio Creek, Georgia. The battle at Utio Creek was part of General Sherman’s campaign to capture Atlanta, and Atlanta itself fell on 1 September 1864.

Apparently, the dead were buried at Utoy Creek, and later removed to the Marietta National Cemetery in Marietta, Georgia. Anthony SCHEMMEL’s name was on a ledger which seems to identify where the bodies were found, his was located “150 yds S of the above under a large pine tree”.

Anthony SCHEMMEL is buried in Section E, Grave Number 6300 of the Marietta National Cemetery in Marietta, Georgia.

SCHEMMEL ImmigrantsIt is said that Conrad SCHEMMEL helped many

immigrants travel to Auglaize County by paying the way from Germany for them, and their families, as long as they agreed to pay him back by becoming “indentured servants”. They agreed to work on his farm, clearing land, etc, for as long as it took to pay back their debts. Those who brought large families

with them may have spent two or three years working for him until their debt was payed off. Conrad

SCHEMMEL was a wealthy land owner, and Justice of the Peace in Allen/Auglaize County. I have not found

any lists of Schemmel Immigrants, but have found several references to this.
