YOUR DESTINATION – Halong Bay

One cannot travel to Vietnam without visiting Halong Bay, a globally famous symbol of Vietnam. Locatedin the Tonkin Gulf, it comprises some 1900 islands and islets creating a spectacular marine landscape oflimestone pillars, which led to it being listed a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1994.The legend says that the Karstic islets were created when a legendary dragon wagged his tail in order todefend Vietnam against Chinese invaders.

The islands of the bay are inaccessible and protected, and only inhabited by animals. As for the people,they have elected to live in floating villages. Here, it is hard to say whether the sea has invaded themountain or whether the mountains are springing out of the sea. Nevertheless, the place retains amysterious charm and offers one of the most striking memories from a trip to Vietnam.

Hoan Kiem Lake is located at the heart of thecity of Hanoi and is the symbol of the city.Whatever the weather, from 5:30am to 10pm,Hanoian life moves and is organized around it.People come here to do their morning exercise,chat with their friends, or even share a fishingtrip with their pals.

Then, walk across the majestic red wood bridge,officially named the Bridge of the rising sun, toreach the small Ngoc Son temple (Temple of theJade mountain), standing on an enticing isletconnected to the banks of Hoan Kiem Lake. Ifyou have not had the chance to catch a glimpseof the extremely rare giant turtle, which nowlives in the jade waters of Hoan Kiem Lake, youmay still admire the mummified one, measuring2.10 meters, and lying at rest inside the temple.

Take a nice ride on an old Vespa on the earlymorning, to dive into Hanoi’s local life.At 5am, you will start from your hotel to reachQuang Ba flower market, which is runningeveryday from 2 to 6am. There, you can admire

the abundance of flowers, and the hustle andbustle of that place where hawkers come to pickup their daily goods. Then you will go for a Tai Chiinitiation in one of the public parks of the city, andafter you will experience a real Vietnamese

breakfast, by eating a pho soup in a streetrestaurant. After getting a coffee in one of Hanoi’snumerous coffee places, you will get back to thehotel.

This tour is definitely one the best way to discoverthe real Vietnam’s capital city life on morning.

In order to better explore the bay and its nooksand crannies in an interesting and entertainingfashion, we are offering you a chance to sail in akayak. Your boat will set anchor a few paddlesaway from the first fishing village and the guidewill provide all the necessary technicalinstructions and safety advice. No need to be atop-‐level athlete or an expert in the subject,kayaking is accessible to all!

During daylight, you will visit Halong bay on atraditional boat, and then in the evening a smalltender will transfer you to Trong cave. Thespecial set-‐up will guarantee you anextraordinary gala dinner.

After the aperitif, guests will be served dinner ina beautiful cave glistening with candlelight, andresonating with classical music performed by aband. A Filipino band can also play, and thendancing will for sure take place after dinner.

The show takes place on the village centralplace, embellished by a square pond. You mayfind however that the village children, whoalways take great pleasure in watching thisperformance, will certainly join you.

You visit the brickyard Phong Nam, where thebricks are still made using traditional methods.Then you board a boat for a cruise along the RiverChet Say (one of the arms of the Mekong). Severalstops are planned to explore various localworkshops, which will allow you to betterunderstand the springs of the local economy. Youdiscover including coconut charcoal plant (madefrom coconut shells thrown in ovens at a very hightemperature), or a coconut processing plant. Thenthe boat crosses a small canal, and then stops in afairly quiet village, where you continue yourdiscovery of life on the delta deeper, via a visit to aworkshop mats, where they are manufacturedmanually on a loom. You can even try your hand atthis activity before you board your "xe loi" (a kindof motorized rickshaw) or take a bike for a walk inthe village. You see traditional farms, rice paddiesand vegetable fields.

This visit of Saigon is a step into the past, visitingthe southern capital’s old quarters in a vintagecar: a 1955-‐1970 Volkswagen. These cars will beawaiting you at your hotel’s reception area alongwith their chauffeurs, the owners of these jewelsof transport. There are two routes to choosefrom: the former colonial quarters or the ChineseQuarter.

In the evening, you may also go out to a very nicerestaurant in the vintage cars, taking the timealong the way to drive through the importantquarters of the city. So play along !
