Fifty years; what incredible dedication indeed! On behalf of our community I would like to acknowledge this fantastic feat and sincerely thank Father Tim for leading our school community as Parish Priest and our spiritual guide for the last eleven years. I would like to invite our parents and parishioners to join us at assembly this Friday from 8.45am as we make a very special presentation to Father Tim. In addition, the parish warm- ly invites all of us to join in the celebrations for a special mass at 10am on Sunday at the Sacred Heart Church, which will be followed by a shared lunch in the Parish Hall. We look forward to Monsignor Tim serving our school and parish community for many years to come. Bogan Bingo on Friday Night There are a few tickets remaining for the P&F Bogan Bingo Night this Friday evening. Tickets can be purchased via the P&F box, direct debit or at the assembly this coming Friday. Tick- ets are $30.00 each, inclusive of pizza. I look forward to joining our community for an enter- taining evening. A Heartfelt Thank You I have taken some time over the long weekend to reflect upon the Sacred Heart Community. What a lucky community we are! The events of the past few weeks have been a wonderful example of how our community pulls together when times are tough and offers their support, love and prayers in countless ways. I have been hum- bled by the number of people who have offered to help families in need and assist the school staff in various ways, especially in the manning of the canteen. Thank you to all of you; we are very blessed indeed. Outside School Hours Care (OSHC) Assessment and Rating Once every five years, all OSHC Services and Long Day Care Services go through a very stringent external assessment and rating review by the Education and Care Regulatory Unit. During this assessment, centres are measured against the National Quality Standards and graded in each of the seven areas. These areas are: Educational program and practice. Children's health and safety. Physical environment. Staffing arrangements. Relationships with children. Collaborative partnerships with families and communities. Leadership and service management.

Recently, our OSHC Service had their Assessment and Rating. I am delighted to report that our centre was rated as “Meeting National Quality Standards” in each of the seven areas. I would like to take this opportunity to thank and recognise the contribution of all of our OSHC staff for their ongoing efforts to providing the very best experience for our children and their families. Well done everyone! Sacred Heart Cross Country Carnival Next Wednesday 14 June is the 2017 House Cross Country Carnival. The carnival will take place at school from 9am onwards for Year 4-6 and 10.50am onwards for Year 1-3. I look forward to seeing as many par-ents as possible join with the community to support the students in their running. We thank Mr Leach for preparing the children for this carnival over the term. Sacred Heart Day One of the most exciting days in the school calendar is almost upon us; Sacred Heart Day. This year Sa-cred Heart Day will be celebrated on Friday 23 June from 8.45am. Please mark this date in your diary and come and join with the children to celebrate. Further details will follow in next week’s newsletter.

May God bless our school and those within it. Miranda Swann Principal

Eagles Cup

The Eagles Cup matches were at home (Sacred Heart last Friday) against Xavier School in Armadale. We had wins in all of the codes.

Football 135 - 0 Soccer 4 -3 Netball A 19-3 Netball B 28-7

Football Report: Sacred Heart were too strong for a timid Xavier. Oscar's barrage of torpedoes, Lachlan's repetitive goal sneaks and Marco's powerful dash out of the centre were just a fraction of the brilliance on display. It was a performance resembling Adelaide's smashing of Freo two weeks ago. Well done boys. Mr Leach

PARENT AND TEACHER SHARING CAFÉ This term we will continue to hold regular parent and teacher sharing opportunities with a focus on

reading. We trust these will be beneficial for all parents. These will be held in the meeting room in the Brennan Hall from 8.45am – 9.45am.

WEDNESDAY 14 JUNE

The Reading Jigsaw—putting all the pieces together

During this chat session we will look at the whole of reading. Please register your expression of interest at the office.

Should you have any questions regarding these sharing cafes or any topics you would like to suggest please email or contact

Mrs Annie Gerhardy. [email protected]

SUSTAINABILITY NEWS

On Tuesday afternoon, Year 6B sorted through our bins to see how much waste our school is producing. It was exciting to see that the only fruit and vegetable scraps we found were…three single grapes! This means that we are using our compost bins well.

Unfortunately, there was a huge amount of plastic wrap, zip lock bags, chip packets and other packaging that could easily be avoided by packing a waste-free lunch. Another huge contributor to our waste at school are Tetrapak Juice boxes, which cannot be recycled.

Here are some facts about plastic and why it should be avoided… (greentumble.com)

Plastic bags are made from non-renewable energy sources and contribute to climate change Plastic pollutes our land AND water Plastic bags never break down (even the ones that claim they do!) the chemicals plastic is made from

stays in our water and soils for hundreds of years Plastic harms marine and wildlife…and humans!

There are plenty of ways to avoid using plastic and tetrapaks in a lunchbox…

Buy food in bulk and use smaller re-usable containers in lunchboxes Use paper wrap to preserve your sandwich instead of cling wrap, or use a reusa-

ble beeswax cover Pack lots of fruit and veggies instead of chips and biscuits - they can then be

composted and are much healthier! Fill a reusable drink bottle with juice or water instead of buying juice boxes.

SACRED HEART DAY - FRIDAY 23 JUNE 2017

*SUSTAINABILITY TENT* This year, in an effort to reduce the amount of waste produced by such a big

event, Sacred Heart Day will include a Sustainability Tent.

Sacred Heart Day is not just a celebration of our school feast, it is also an opportunity to give back to those who are in need. This means protecting our precious environment so that generations to come can enjoy the re-

sources of our amazing planet!

Available in the tent will be:

A recycling station: collecting paper, plastics, glass and aluminum

TerraCycle bins: to recycle beauty and oral care packaging

Battery recycling bin: to recycle batteries and prevent harsh chemicals from entering our soils and waterways

Composting: to collect any fruit and vegetable scraps

Soft plastic recycling: such as plastic wrappers and bags from products purchased on the day

For every item recycled in the sustainability tent, students will receive a raffle ticket to go into the draw to win a mystery sustainability prize!

GKA is an English immersion school so the students are very good at English and eager to experi-ence life in Australia! The visiting students will stay with a family from the school and participate in regular classes. Families who have a child in Year 4, 5 and 6 are invited to host a student. The visiting students will stay with a family from the school and participate in regular classes. Families who have a child in Year 4,5 or 6 are invited to host a student. Hosting is as simple as involving the student in your daily routines such as walking the dog, kick-

ing a ball in the park, enjoying a BBQ, and even helping out with chores!

These simple things we enjoy are often the highlights of their trip. Gold Intercultural Learning has been running homestay programs since 2004 and will provide 24/7 bilingual support, a bilingual staff member stationed at the school, and a visit from a team member to answer all your questions in person. You will also receive a host payment of $450 to assist with costs of providing meals and

board.
