Preachers love people but they are not pastors: Elders are the church’s pastors or shepherds. Preachers love well-led churches but they are not administrators: Elders are the church’s bishops or overseers. So, what is the highest contri-bution a preacher makes? Preaching. Preparing and delivering sermons is job one.
Q - How do you decide what to preach? A - When I was younger, I spent half my time choosing what to preach. Obviously, that leaves a lot less time to work on the sermon. I came to realize there is not one perfect topic. It is simply a choice (albeit a prayerful one). Current events or special occasions may inform my choice. Overall, what I strive for is variety and balance: I rotate between sermons that ground, inspire, equip and challenge. My goal is to preach the “whole” coun-sel of God (Acts 20.27).
Q - How do you decide how to preach? A - Paul be-came all things to all people (1 Cor. 9.22). Similarly, my tastes ought not override the church’s needs. Some prefer expository preaching (verse by verse). Others enjoy deep theology (systematic). Many like topical sermons that equip and exhort. My favorite is narrative preaching that uses stories to touch hearts, but I use them all to meet the needs of all people and all ages.
Q - How do you juggle preaching and other responsibilities? A – By planning ahead and working ahead (Proverbs 6.6). I plan for the year but nail sermons down a month at a time. Then I work on sermons early in the week. That leaves plenty of time for improvements as new ideas occur. I work on my Sunday night sermon first so I can be sure it is worth your effort to return. I promise to bring my best so you can be your best.

A Note from The Hills
Peggy and I have decided it is time to leave
Southern Hills and we will be attending the
Salem Creek Church of Christ in Murfreesboro.
It was a VERY difficult decision since we have
been at Southern Hills for 25 years and love you
all. Salem Creek seems to be a very loving and
sound congregation and we know we will be
happy there. You all have a standing invitation to
come visit us any time, you will always be
welcome. We will continue to keep the Southern
Hills Church in our prayers and ask that you
continue to please pray for us.
Our Love and Prayers,
Jerald and Peggy Hill
THANK YOU!
Dear Brethren:
On behalf of the Gatlinburg Church of Christ, We
are writing to express our deep gratitude for your
generous and gracious gift of $7,032 for Fire Relief.
We apologize for being late in writing, but we have
been overwhelmed since the disastrous fires struck
Gatlinburg and destroyed our church building.
Your contribution will be used to help families in
our congregation who lost their homes and other
families in the community who have need, as well
as in the rebuilding of our church building.
We have been blessed to find a place for the church
to meet while rebuilding. It is located at 109 West
Ogle Street, just off Highway 321 in Gatlinburg. We
have taken a year’s lease on the property which,
hopefully, will give us sufficient time to get into a
new building. We plan to rebuild on the same site.
We have been overwhelmed at the great outpouring
of love, prayers, support and encouragement from
Churches of Christ around the country and even
overseas. Thank you very much for your gift and
the compassion which it manifests. May God bless
you for caring.
Yours in Christ,
Rod Rutherford: evangelist
