Wednesday May 3 2017 From Sue The Future at Hampton On Tuesday 16 May we are planning to have an open forum discussion with interested community members about our school priorities and plans for the next 5 years. The discussion will include: What goals and priorities do we have for our school? What resources and facilities do we want and or need for our school, both educational, and buildings and grounds? The schools Master Plan will be on display and will be part of the discussion. How can we achieve these goals utilising departmental resources and support, fundraising, grants and sponsorship? What role might the ParentsAssociation, School Council, staff, parents, children and local community have in working towards achieving the goals? Do we need a different operational structure to address and deliver on our goals? We currently have a School Council, the Leadership team, staff the Fundraising Committee, Education Committee, Buildings and Grounds Committee, Finance Committee, the Parents Association, the Grants Committee and individuals within the school community that discuss and consider these matters. We hope to be able to streamline our processes and establish a clear structure to assist in working towards our goals. We plan to have small group discussions, which will maximise parental, staff and community input. The session will conducted in the BER building at 7pm and conclude at 8pm. We will be providing drinks and nibbles. If you able to attend, please inform the school office via email, telephone or in person. I look forward to seeing community members on this night! NAPLAN Testing for Children in Years 3 and 5 Next week all children in Years 3 and 5 will be involved in NAPLAN tests in literacy and numeracy. The testing will take place in the mornings on the following days: Tuesday 9 May Year 3 and 5 - language conventions for 40 minutes and writing for 40 minutes Wednesday 10 May Year 3 - reading for 45 minutes, Year 5 – reading for 50 minutes Thursday 11 May Year 3 - numeracy for 45 minutes and Year 5 – numeracy for 50 minutes NAPLAN tests the sorts of skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life, such as reading, writing, spelling, grammar and numeracy. It is important to remember that NAPLAN tests are not pass/fail tests. Individual student performance is shown on a national achievement scale for each test. The performance of individual students can be compared to the average performance of all students in Australia. At the classroom level, it is one of a number of important tools used by teachers to measure student progress.

The discussion will include: What goals and priorities do we have for our school? What resources and facilities do we want and or need for our school, both educational, and

buildings and grounds? The school’s Master Plan will be on display and will be part of the discussion.

How can we achieve these goals utilising departmental resources and support, fundraising, grants and sponsorship?

What role might the Parents’ Association, School Council, staff, parents, children and local community have in working towards achieving the goals?

Do we need a different operational structure to address and deliver on our goals? We currently have a School Council, the Leadership team, staff the Fundraising Committee, Education Committee, Buildings and Grounds Committee, Finance Committee, the Parents’ Association, the Grants Committee and individuals within the school community that discuss and consider these matters. It is essential that children are punctual next week; as the tests are conducted at the start of the school day. We hope that all children in Years 3 and 5 will be able to participate in the testing next week. If you have any queries regarding the testing process, please see your child’s teacher, Anne Coburn, the NAPLAN Coordinator or me. Wonderful Women’s Day for Prep-2: Friday 12 May Next week as we lead up to Mother’s Day we will be celebrating Wonderful Women’s Day on Friday 12 May for grades Prep-2. The infant grades are hoping to have some mums and or special women to come into the classrooms between 9 and 10am and join in the learning. There will be a special morning tea for the mums and special women at 10am in the courtyard.. Preps will be focusing on reading and writing during this time Year 1s will be working on their inquiry unit Year 2s will be working on both reading and maths and using board games as a focus. Academic Excellence Awards Congratulations go the following students who received academic excellence awards at assembly yesterday: Lexie Dichiera from Prep B for demonstrating pleasing progress in all areas of reading,

writing and maths where she confidently explains her reasoning Isaac Tzimos from FB for demonstrating a marked growth in confidence and resilience

in all aspects of his learning, evident in reading, spelling and writing Henry Nankivell from FD for performing well above the expected level in reading and

maths and consistently displaying enthusiasm and persistence Brielle Hazard from FD for demonstrating confidence and capability in reading, spelling

and maths consistently and showing an ability to think logically and clearly justify her opinions.

Support for our School Rachel Follett attended our assembly yesterday to present citizenship awards to children who have demonstrated a willingness to think about and support others before considering their own needs. I extend congratulations to the following students: Juliette Hostein in 2C for demonstrating a positive, encouraging and optimistic

approach with peers in the classroom, consistently showing kindness and thoughtfulness. Jack Cahill in 6B for demonstrating a positive, encouraging and empathetic approach

In addition, Rachel has provided a donation to extend our Library resources including the purchase of the following picture story books: Spinderella by Julia Donaldson My name is Lizzie Flynn: the story of the Rajah quilt by Claire Saxby Lucy’s book by Natalie Jane Prior The Iridescence of Birds: a book about Henri Matisse by Patricia MacLachlan The promise by Nicola Davies Beth: the story of a child convict by Mark Wilson The Marvellous Fluffy Squishy Itty Bitty by Beatrice Alemagna My sincere thanks go to Follett & Co. and to Rachel for her attendance and continued support of our school.

Student Support In 3/4 sport we are introducing Lacrosse this term and Rob needed some assistance to demonstrate the skills properly. Josh Docking, Josh Eddey, Nick Karamitos and Jack Cahill all volunteered. Their performance in coaching total beginners was really impressive! The boys taught each grade 4 child carefully and with amazing support and encouragement. They made such an impact with their coaching efforts, that they were actually able to have a game by the end by the end of the training session. The grade 4s from Deb Brayshaw's class were very receptive and extremely appreciative of the effort provided by the boys in grade 6. Lacrosse will eventually be a Commonwealth Games sport and maybe even an Olympic sport one day; hopefully we will see an Australian Team Member who commenced their journey at Hampton. Assembly Performances

Anzac Day Yesterday at assembly, Amy Wilson from 6B and Miranda McLean from 6C presented their Anzac Day poems, which they recited with excellent timing and obvious confidence. Both girls created poems of high quality where the extraordinary contribution and commitment displayed by our soldiers was evident, not to mention the toll and affect war had on the families of those involved at the time and for future generations. Amy and Miranda are to be congratulated on their literary talents and

their heartfelt delivery. Congratulations go to Hannah Papps from 6A who played the Last Post for the Anzac Day assembly. This is a challenging piece of music to play which Hannah had been practising diligently for some time. Sometimes the enormity of a formal occasion can result in nerves for the performer, with 712 children, 60 staff and over 200 parents in attendance, Hannah contained her nerves impressively and her performance was excellent.

Well done to 4B who led the singing of the National Anthem. Congratulations go the members of the School Band who performed ‘Batman’ and ‘Caribbean Delight’ with Dario conducting yesterday at assembly. The band played confidently and with excellent tempo, noticeably impressing the audience. Jasmyn Marcus and Bianca Stewart from 4D have been working on numbers in Mandarin recently. They summarised the rule of saying two digit numbers in Mandarin and enthusiastically shared it at assembly yesterday. The tip involved: when you say two digit numbers in Mandarin, you break the numbers down to tens and units. The concept of place value in mathematics is the same for both Mandarin and English. For example, if you try to tell the number 35 in Mandarin, you break it

down to three tens and five ones, which in Mandarin is 三十五(35)

Well done to Jasmyn and Bianca who confidently shared their knowledge. Chess The chess tournament conducted over the last couple of weeks of Term 1 was well supported by our after school chess enthusiasts. I extend congratulations to the following students who have made excellent progress and show talent in chess: Group 1 1st Place – Nico White in 4C Best & Fairest player (Trophy)

2nd Place – John Goodwin in 4B Silver Grasshopper (Badge) 3rd Place – Nathan Gee in 6D Bronze Grasshopper (Badge)

Group 2 1st Place – Daniel Storey in 3A Best & Fairest player (Trophy)

2nd Place – Oliver Elliott in 4D Silver Grasshopper (Badge) 3rd Place – Sean Lawson in 4C Bronze Grasshopper (Badge)

My thanks go to Phil Hooton our chess master who instructs the students in after school classes. Sue Knight Principal

The parking inspector regularly inspects the 2 minute pickup area and if you exit your car for any reason, even to open a boot you will be booked.

The 2 minute zone is only for parents whose children are old enough to exit the school by themselves. If you need to enter the school to collect your child

you must park in an appropriate parking place.

Hampton Primary will be actively enforcing this in conjunction with the Bayside City Council.
