Forking out your hard-earned savings to cram into a field filled with 50,000 other people (while wearing your favourite polka-dot raincoat and all-important Hunter wellies) may not sound too appealing to most people. But throw in some of the top musical acts in the world, hours of live music, open-air stages and mud-covered memories with your friends and you have all the ingredients you need for one unforgettable summer. Music festivals have never been so popular and with hundreds of acts coming live to a field near you pretty soon, Natalie Burke has hand-picked some of this summer's hottest music festivals at home and abroad.

It's been voted Best European Festival in the past, it's 100 per cent carbon neutral and features a bunch of little extras such as a silent disco, a campsite funfair and a beauty salon tent. What's hot: You can nab cheaper

tickets before 27 May if you can prove you've attended three or more Electric Picnics in previous years. So how can you do that? With old

photos, ticket stubs or wristbands. If you're not a hoarder, or have a tendency to clean your room on a regular basis, you might have to fork

out a bit extra. But it won't be just about music. Check out the Body and Soul

Village, the comedy stage, the farmer's market and the Mindfield area for spoken

word entertainment. Podpads and Festihuts

Tickets: Until 27 May, tickets will cost €149.50 if you can prove you've been to three or more picnics; €169.50 if you can prove you've been once before or €189.50 if you're a first timer. It's more than a music festival though, meaning it's also all about the arts. Plus it's brand new and this year will be its inaugural festival. The tent will also be a platform for some up-andcoming

comedians and the perfect place to have a good giggle with your mates! Tickets: Day tickets are priced at €54.50 and full weekend tickets are €99.50. See www.forbiddenfruit.ie.

What's hot: The fact that it's more of a beach party than your average festival makes it hot. A little different to others, it's a festival that incorporates health, sports and an outdoor lifestyle, along with the usual party-fuelled antics you can expect at a big outdoor music event. So if you're not dancing around, you could be joining a volleyball tournament on the beach or attempting to catch a wave. Tickets: Weekend tickets are €89 and weekend tickets with camping are €99 Check out www.seasessions.com.

Nicky proves he's a a big Hit at RTE with summer TV V presenting gig

By Ken Sweeney FORMER Westlife star Nicky Byrne is to be one of the two hosts of RTE summer music show The Hit.

Already used to playing in vast arenas, the 34-year-old will join co-presenter Aidan Power live onstage

at the 02 in July when established names perform the songs of

unknown songwriters. Running in the Friday night slot

of the Late Late Show, The Hit will be one of the biggest talent shows ever aired by RTE.

Insiders have revealed they needed a presenter used to appearing on

big stages to anchor performances during the six-week run at the 02.

"Not only has Nicky performed with Westlife at the 02, but he has also co-hosted the Cheerio's Childline

Concert a number of times in the same venue for organiser Caroline

Downey Desmond. "Except this time Nicky will be cohosting

a television show," said a show insider.

PILOT The Nicky Byrne/Aidan Power team replaces MTV's Laura Whitmore, who presented the original pilot of The Hit, which aired last year as part of RTE's Format Farm.

Producer Philip Kampf said: "It's going to be much bigger and better than the pilot and for that reason we need two presenters, not one."

Beginning on Friday July 26, each week two well-known singers will cherry-pick songs from unknown songwriters, who will only discover if their song has been selected when the acts take to the stage.

At the end of the competition, two songs will go head to head and be available to download on iTunes, with the winner being whoever gets the most downloads.

Ratings for rival RTE talent show The Voice Of Ireland had been strong, but winner Keith Hanley only managed to reach no 37 in the Irish charts.

But The Hit insiders are more optimistic.

Sidelines, the winning track performed by Royseven from their

show pilot last year, topped the Irish iTunes chart, with runner-up Invisible

by Brian McFadden reaching number 3, with demand crashing Irish iTunes after the final last September.

BIRTHDAY U2 producer Steve Lillywhite will again assist in the selection of songs, which songwriters can submit through applications available on the RTE and IMRO website.

Nicky Byrne also covers for Ryan Tubridy on May 29, when the Late Late host takes a day off from his 2fm radio show to celebrate his 40th birthday.

Nightclub has songs banned in royalty row By Ray Managh

ONE of the country's top night clubs has had its DJ playlist slashed by tens of thousands of hits.

The songs fall within the repertoire of IMRO, the Irish Music Rights Organisation.

Barrister Una Cassidy told the Circuit Civil Court yesterday that club owner John Conway, who trades as Joys in Lower Baggot Street, Dublin, was still contravening a music licence agreement that had already been cancelled by the organisation.

UNPAID

IMRO, a non-profit making limited company, each year collects more than €32m in royalties

from pubs, clubs and other venues for distribution to songwriters, composers and music publishers who make up its 8,500 members in Ireland.

Ms Cassidy told Judge Jacqueline Linnane during an application for judgment for €4,430 against Conway, that a much earlier judgment obtained against him last year for €11,560 remained unpaid.

IMRO had cancelled its music performing licence with the club in September last year.

Judge Linnane granted the new judgment application along with an injunction restraining the playing of any IMRO copyrighted music in Joys.

She refused counsel for Conway an adjournment.

Nightclub playlist reduced bylmro RAYMANAGH

Joys, one of the Dublin's longest established night clubs,

has had its DJ playlist cut by tens of thousands of disco hits that fall within the repertoire

of Imro, the Irish Music Rights Organisation.

Barrister Una Cassidy told the Circuit Civil Court yesterday

that club owner John Conway, who trades as Joys on Lower Baggot Street, Dublin,

was still contravening a music licence agreement that had already been cancelled

by the organisation. Imro, a non-profit making

limited company, each year collects more than €32 million

in royalties from pubs, clubs and other venues for distribution to songwriters, composers and music publishers

who make up its 8,500 members in Ireland.

Ms Cassidy told Judge Jacqueline Linnane during an

application for judgment for €4,430 against Mr Conway, that a much earlier judgment obtained against him last year for €11,560 remained unpaid.

Imro had cancelled its music performing licence in September last.

Judge Linnane granted the new judgment application

along with an injunction restraining the playing of any Imro-copyrighted music in Joys. She refused counsel for Mr Conway an adjournment on the basis that the €11,560 granted in May 2012 still remained

unpaid. A spokesperson for Imro,

which has increased its pursuit of music venues, said its

mission was to protect and develop the collection and distribution

of music royalties which in 2011 had amounted to €36.5 million.

Ocean FM rewarded for

supporting Irish Musicians FOR the second year in a row, Ocean FM has

won the prestigious IMRO Independent Radio Award, in recognition of its continued commitment

to supporting Irish music and Irish music creators.

The IMRO Independent Radio Award is presented by the Irish Music Rights Organisation (IMRO) to the radio station, which features the largest number of Irish music creators in its programming output.

The award was presented by Victor Finn, CEO of IMRO to Tim Collins, CEO of Ocean FM at the IBI Annual Broadcasting Conference, which took place in Dublin last week.
