    SupportingCommunityDevelopmentinGuyanaTropicalrainforests,brightgreenricefields,blackwaterriv-

    ers,andstunningmountainrangesareallpartofthebeautiful

    landofGuyana.ThepeopleofGuyanahavediverseback-

    groundsandrichculturaltraditions.Butpoliticaltroubles,

    ethnictension,andeconomicmismanagementhaveleftGuy-

    anawithaneconomythatranksasoneofSouthAmericas

    poorest.Depressedwagesandsalaries,adecliningeconomy,

    andtheflightofskilledworkerstomorelucrativelabormar-

    ketshaveledtoafallinanalreadylowlivingstandard.Guy-

    anaalsofacesenvironmentalthreatstothecoastalstripand

    rainforest,underdevelopedhealthcare,laborconstraints,low

    literacyrates,poverty,andcrimefuelledbythedrugstrade.

    ThePeaceCorpsfirstreceivedaformalinvitationfromThe

    GovernmentofGuyanain1966.Sincethenmorethan380

    PeaceCorpsVolunteers(PCVs)haveservedinGuyana.Volun-teersserveatsitesrangingfromthecapitalcityofGeorge-

    town,withapopulationof300,000,tosmall,remotevillages

    withpopulationsfewerthan300.Volunteersaddresseduca-

    tional,health,andtechnicalconcernsbyprovidingcommunity

    healtheducationandtraininginliteracy,lifeskills,academics,

    andinformationtechnology,allincollaborationwithGuy-

    aneseministriesandNGOs.PCVsassistexistingeffortstofa-

    cilitatecommunityinvolvement,trainserviceproviders,and

    introducenewtrainingandteachingmethodologies.

    In2007,severalReturnedPeaceCorpsVolunteers(RPCV)who

    servedinGuyanajoinedforcestostartFriendsandReturned

    VolunteersofGuyana(FROG).FROGisanofficiallyregistered

    non-profitorganizationbasedinWashingtonD.C.andanaffili-

    ateoftheNationalPeaceCorpsAssociation.FROGisanorga-

    nizationforthosewholovetheculture,peopleandlandof

    Guyanaandbelieveinsupportingthecountrysdevelopment.

    FROGsMission:Friends&RPCVsofGuyanaisanon-profit,

    servicebasedorganizationdedicatedtosupportingeducation,

    health,social,economic,culturalandenvironmentalprograms

    inandaboutGuyanathroughanetworkofRPCVs,Guyanese

    nationals,Guyanese-Americans,andallthoseinterestedinthe

    GuyaneseCommunity.

    FROGprovidesassistanceintheformofsmallgrantsandre-

    sourcestosupportcommunitydrivenprojectsthatvolunteers

    areinvolvedin.Inadditiontothis,wecoordinateGuyanese

    culturaleventsandawarenessactivitiesintheU.S.,bothasa

    partoftheThirdGoalofPeaceCorpsandasameansto

    strengthensupportforthepeopleofGuyana.

    AboutTheSeawall

    TheSeawall,shotentirelyonlocationinGeorgetown,Guy-

    ana,centersaroundMarjorie,anolderGuyanesewoman,

    asshepreparesforher10-yearoldgrandsonsmoveto

    Americatobewithhismother.Thecastandcrewconsisted

    oflocalGuyanesenon-actors,non-professionals,andstu-

    dentsworkingalongsideacrewfromLosAngeles,Califor-

    nia.InadditiontobeinghisthesisprojectatCaliforniaInsti-

    tuteoftheArts,thefilmallowedRichardstoreturntohis

    homecountrytosharewhathehaslearnedandmakea

    filminthecommunity-withthecommunity.ThedirectorwasinspiredtomakethisfilmafterreturningtoGuyana

    andwantingtoshareaglimpseofthelivesofaGuyanese

    family,rarelyeverseen,toalargeraudience.

    TheSeawallwasselectedtobepartofthe64th

    Festivalde

    Cannes.HeldinMay2011inCannes,France,thefestival,

    oneoftheworldsoldestandmostprestigious,highlights

    thebestandbrightestnewworkscreatedoverthelast

    year.TheSeawallwasshownaspartoftheShortFilmCor-

    FROGhasfundedthirteenprojectsinGuyana,withten

    classwithwomenlivinginMahdia,Region8.Theideafor

    thisprojectstartedafterwomenwithyoungchildrenwho

    participatedinhealthandnutritionclassesfortheirchil-

    drenexpressedaninterestinaddressingtheirownhealth.

    WithnogymorhealthfacilitiesinMahdia,Ryanappliedfo

    aFROGgranttohelpfundaprojectforthesewomen.Over

    thecourseofthreemonths,twelvewomenmeteveryFri-

    dayfrom6:30to8:00PMforfloor aerobicswithanexperi-

    encedteacher.Eachwomanwasgivenamatandawaterbottleuponpaymentoftheregistrationfeeof$500Guy-

    anese.Nutritionanddietsessionwerealsoheldatthebe-

    ginningorendoftheaerobicssessions.

    Ryanwrote,Inthebeginning,classattendancewasslow

    but,bytheendofthecoursewomenhadtobeturned

    awayduetospaceconstraints.Themajorityoftheexer-

    cisesperformedweredesignedsothatthewomencould

    performthemontheirown.Infact,womenwereencour-

    agedweeklytodothis.Bytheendofthesessionsall

    womennotedanincreaseinenergylevelsandallwomen

    expressedinterestincontinuingexerciseafterofficialclassceased.Overall,theclasswentextremelywell,persons

    weresadtoseeitendandhadlearnedagreatdeal.

    RachelleHall-WhiteWaterSportsClub:LetsPlaySports

    WhileworkinginWhiteWater,Region1,RachelleHall(Guy

    21),sawanopportunitytohelptheyouthsportsgroupof

    WhiteWater.Theyouthplaycricketandfootball,butad-

    ditionalactivitiesareoftenintegrated.Theyouthsages

    rangefrom7-17yearsoldandcanbeseenpracticingtheir

    favoritesportsduringrainorshine,everydayafter

    school.

    WithherFROGgrant,Rachellehelpedtheteamgetuni-

    formsandworkedwiththemonhealtheducationtopics.

    Insteadofhavinggroupclasses,theparticipantschoseto

    meetwithRachelleonanindividualbasistoallowthemto

    receivehealthinformationconfidentially,ontopicsthey

    chose.Thesetopicsincludedadolescentdevelopment,

    familyplanning,STIprevention,andmaintenanceofbody

    injury.Rachellewrote,Isawalotoftheparticipants

    openupandaskquestionsrelatedtotheirchosentopic.

    Theywereeagertolearnwithouttheembarrassmentthat

    wouldhaveinevitablytakenplaceifthesubjectswere

    discussedinfrontofthegroup.

    RachelleHall-SewinginWhiteCreekWomensGroup

    WithherFROGgrant,Rachellealsoworkedwithalocal

    womensgroup,calledRiseandShineWomensGroup,in

    WhiteCreek,Region1.The22womeninthegroupwantedassistanceinrepairingtheirsewingmachines,as

    theyweremissingpartsandthegrouplackedmaterials

    andresourcestostarttheirprojects.FROGgrantfunds

    wereusedtopurchasetheseneededmaterials.The

    womenplantousethepurchasedmaterialstosewprod-

    uctssuchasaccessoriesandclothingthattheycansellat

    communityfunctionsandusethemoneytofurthertheir

    groupsfinances.

    Attheirgroupmeetingsduringthetimeperiodofthis

    project,Rachellehelpedfacilitatehealthtalksontopics

    theychose,includingHIV/AIDS,breastfeeding,andma-ternalhealth.Rachellewrotethatitmeantalottothe

    groupthattheywereincludedinthefundingfromthe

    FROGgrant.Theyweresurprisedthatthemoneywould

    beavailabletoaidethemintheirsewingprojectsasmost

    grantsinthevillagerevolvearoundmanuallaborfrom

    men.Thegroupleaderstatedshewasinspiredbytheop-

    portunityandknewthatthewomenhadmanytalents

    andthatnowtheywouldhavenoexcusebuttoputthese

    talentsintopractice.

    MicaGaardYakusarii

    GuyanaA.R.T.S.(Act,Reach,Think,andShine)

    MicaGaard,Guy21,usedaFROGgranttohelpsupport

    GuyanaA.R.T.S.,ayouthdevelopmentprogramthaten-

    couragesteens(ages13to16)toAct,Reach,Think,and

    Shinethroughthearts.Thisprojectfocusedonchildrenin

    BlackBush,Corentyne,Region6,whohaveverylimited

    self-improvementopportunitiesandoftendonotattend

    schoolregularly.ThegoalwastogivetheteensinBlack

    Bushtheopportunitytogrowinafunandnurturingenvi-

    ronmentduringthesummerholiday.Alongwiththearts,

    theprogramalsoincludedactivitiesthatwouldallowfor

    leadershipamongtheolderstudentsandparticipationin

    communityserviceactivitiesforall.

    Attheendofthethirdweek,13ofthestudentswentona

    fieldtriptoanearbyorphanage,wherethestudentsledar

    projectstheyhadlearnedtomakeduringtheirlessons.

    MicawrotethatAttheendoftheprogram,allthestu-dentsagreedthatthiswastheirfavoritepartofthesum-

    merprogram,andtheycould

    notwaittogobackagain.

    Additionally,Micawrotethatin

    fourweeks,studentswereable

    tolearnnewartisticskills,make

    newfriends,participateina

    communityserviceproject,and

    havefundoingsomethingthey

    hadneverreallybeenableto

    experiencebefore.

    ProjectsInprogress:

    StephenNewberg-SchoolFurnitureRefurbishmentandYouthRehabilitationProject

    StephenNewbergrecentlyreceivedaFROGgranttowork

    withtheNewOpportunityCorps(NOC),ayouthdetention

    facility,torepairdeterioratingfurniturecurrentlyinuseat

    thenumerousschoolsontheEssequiboCoastbeginning

    withAbramsZuilSecondaryschool.Thedesksandchairs

    usedbythestudentsinthiscommunitysschoolsareover

    20yearsold,andmanyhavemissingorbrokenBoardsor

    supportsandcannolongerbeusedsafely.Others,with

    exposednailsandscrews,arebeingusedatgreatrisktoth

    students.Thefundsarebeingusedtopurchasetheneces-

    saryhandtoolsandmaterialtoperformtherepairwork.

    Inadditiontohelpingwiththeneededrepairs,Stephens

    projectwillengageyouthwhoresideatNOCtoperformth

    workintheirjoinery.DuetobudgetaryconstraintstheNOC

    iscurrentlylimitedintheamountofmaterialtheyareable

    toprocurefortheirstudentslearningwoodworkingskills

    atthejoinery.Thisisanopportunitytoprovidethemwith

    materialstoenhancethoseskills.

    LindaErskin-SuddiePrimaryStudentLendingLibrary

    LindaErskiniscurrentlyusingherFROGgrantto establish

    astudentrunlendinglibraryatSuddiePrimarySchoolontheEssequiboCoast,wherestudentsdonothaveaccess

    toreadingmaterialotherthanschoolbooks.Theproject

    willestablishacollectionofstorybooksfor1st4thgrad-

    erswhoseparentsaretrainedinreadingtotheirchildren.

    Lindawillalsoworkwithagroupofstudentstoteach

    themhowtorunasmalllendinglibrarybydevelopinga

    bookcataloguesystem,organizingthelibrary,loaning

    bookstotheirpeers,repairingbooks,andinsuringthat

    loanedbooksarereturned.

    FROGfundsarebeingusedtopurchasefictionbooksfrom

    theGuyanaBookFoundationandothersources,aswellas

    initiateaprogramfordonatedusedbooksfromtheUSA,

    Canada,andGuyana.Thisprojectalsoaimstoimprove

    utilizationoftheschoollibrarybymakingminorrepairsto

    existingbookshelves.

    JohnOConnor-LaptopforStudentNursesatSt.Joseph

    MercyHospital

    JohnOConnor,FROGsfirstnon-PCVorRPCVgrantee,is

    oneoftworetiredfacultyfromMcMasterUniversityhave

    volunteeredtoteachattheSchoolofNursingatSt.Joseph

    MercyHospitalinGeorgetown.In2010,theyinitiateda

    ProblemBasedLearningcoursethatintegratedneurology,

    ethics,psychology,andsociologycourses.Thecoursewas

    extremelywell-receivedwiththestudentsbeingactive

    learners.Oneofthemajorweaknesseswasthelackofac-

    cesstocomputerterminalsandinternetaccess.Johnap-

    pliedforaFROGgranttopurchasealaptoptobeusedby

    nursingstudentsinthehospital'sComputerCafe.Thepro-jecthasalsosecuredfundingfromothersourcestopur-

    chasethreeadditionalcomputers.

    Thelaptopswillbeusedtoaccessevidenced-basedlitera-

    ture,suchasScholarlyJournalsprovidedfreebyWHO's

    HINARIProject,WikipediaScholar,GoogleScholar,etc.

    Studentswillbetrainedtobecomeinternetresearchers

    duringtheirthreemonthsandtheywillbeabletoapply

    theirnetresearchskillstosubsequentcoursesintheirdi-

    plomaprogram.TheComputerCafeatthehospitalhassix

    internetconnectedstationsandbeforethehospitalfireof

    May2010,therewereworkingcomputersateachstation.

    However,allbutoneofthesecomputerswasmovedto

    replacecomputersinotherareasofthehospitalthatwere

    destroyedbyfire.

    ToreadmoreaboutJohnsworkinGuyanaandhowheha

    raisedmoneyforthisandotherprojects,pleasevisithis

    NickSmith,Guy20,workedwithvillageleadersinKwatamang,asmallvillageinRegion

    9betweenAnnaiandtheRupununiRiver,toraiseasectionofgroundlinkingtheEast

    andWestsidesofthevillage.Thevillageisdividedbyalowareathatisalwaysmuddy

    andnearimpassableduringrainyseasonwhenthisareafloods.TheFROGgrantfunds

    wereusedtoenhancetheeffortsofthecommunityinthiseffort.

    Nickwrote,TheSuccesseseasilyoutweighedthechallenges.Simplyputthereisnowa

    paththatwillmakecrossingagiantmudpuddlealoteasier.Thelocalmini-busesnow

    candrivetoSmallKwatamangandpickpeopleupordropsuppliesoff.ThelocalBull-ox

    cartscancross.TheChildrencancometoschoolonrainydays.Theprojectwasde-

    signedbythevillagers,budgetedbythevillagersandcompletedbythevillagers;they

    havealotofownershipintheproject.Ownershipinprojectsleadstowardsmainte-

    nanceofprojects,maintenanceofprojectsleadstowardssustainableprojects.Ifeel

    thisprojectis sustainableandsuccessful.

    NickSmith,Kwatamang(Region9),PathandLandBridgeImprovement

    FROGcongratulatesallofthegrantreceiptsfor2011onjobswelldone.Welookforwardtocontinuingtosupporttheeffortsofthosewhoare

    makingadifferenceinthecommunitiesthattheyserve.

    tionPromoter.TeachingataK-9school,sheworkedwithteacherstobuildanewlibraryandestablishan

    artsprogramintwoschools.MicanowlivesinCalifornia,continuingtoteachnowchildrenschoirand

    handfulofpianostudents.Althoughthefutureisuncertainforher,sheknowsitwillcontinuetoinclude

    ManypeopleaskmewhyIdonatemytimetoFriends&ReturnedPeaceCorpsVolunteers

    ofGuyana.Althoughitisalotofwork,IhavefoundthetimeIhavespentwithFROGtobe
