Citizen’s Advice Bureau Beware of “Free” Pension Reviews

Citizens Advice Surrey Heath is a local charity which provides free, confidential and impartial advice to anyone living or working in Surrey Heath.

Between 10 and 4 from Monday to Thursday you can phone us on 01276-684342 or visit us at Rear of Library, Knoll Road, Camberley GU15 3SY.

Be wary if you're contacted out of the blue by

phone, email, text or via an online advert about

geWng a 'free pension review' to 'get beSer re-

turns'. Most of the companies making these offers

haven't been authorised by the Financial Conduct

Authority, even though they say they are ac"ng on

their behalf. Or companies may say they're repre-

sen"ng government about free re"rement guid-

ance - an ini"a"ve that's not been launched yet.

What should you do?

If you are contacted by one of these companies,

ignore them. Professional advice on pensions isn't

free and financial advisers authorised by the Finan-

cial Conduct Authority are unlikely to cold call.

These reviews are aimed at geWng you to move

money from an exis"ng personal or occupa"onal

pension into other schemes called self-invested

personal pensions (SIPP) or small self-administered

schemes (SSAS). The pension pot is then typically

invested in unregulated investments like overseas

property developments, forestry or storage units

known as store pods. These are higher risk and

you could lose everything you've invested, reduc-

ing your re"rement income.

If you invest your pension in one of these schemes

you won't be able to complain to the Financial

Ombudsman Service or get compensa"on from

the Financial Services Compensa"on Scheme if

things go wrong. You are unlikely to be able to get

your money back if you've dealt with an adviser

who isn't authorised by the Financial Conduct Au-

thority.

GeLng financial advice about your pension

If you want to review your pension arrangements,

you should get independent advice from an au-

thorised financial adviser. Always check that any-

one offering advice or financial services is author-

ised by the Financial Conduct Authority. You can

search the Financial Conduct Authority register for

authorised advisers at www.fca.org.uk

If you have already moved your pension and have

concerns, contact any authorised companies that

were involved. The Ombudsman might be able to

help if you cannot get the maSer resolved with

those companies. You can contact the Financial

Ombudsman Service for concerns about author-

ised companies at www.financial-

ombudsman.org.uk

More informa$on

There are massive changes currently under way in

state, workplace and private pensions. One of the

biggest is that the Government is making it easier

for people over 55 to withdraw cash from their

pension pot – although tax will need to be paid in

many circumstances. You should also bear in mind

that if you are in a final salary company pension

scheme, then you are unlikely to get beSer returns

elsewhere.

Make sure you understand how investments work,

the risks involved and what they mean for you.

Your adviser should consider whether they are

suitable for you. For most individual investors,

inves"ng your pension money in unregulated in-

vestments is unlikely to be in your best interests.

Consider all investment op"ons - leaving your

pension pot where it is may be the best decision.

You and Your Body Why Get Fit?

T here are many reasons why we are not fit – our daily lives involve a lot less physical activity that in our grandparents’ day, most of us own cars and an in-

creasing number of people spend hours sitting in front of computers.

The excuses The pressures of home and family life can also make it feel as if there's little time left for exercise. So, it's worth thinking about what you gain from regular exer-cise and making even a partial improvement to your health. Physical inactivity is an independent risk factor for coronary heart disease - in other words, if you don't exercise you dramatically increase your risk of dying from a heart attack. Conversely, exercise means a healthier heart because it reduces several cardiovascu-lar risks, including high blood pressure. Being physically active can bolster good mental health and help you to manage stress, anxiety and even depression. Regular exercise can help you achieve and maintain an ideal body weight, which can be important in managing many health conditions, or may just make you feel happier about your appearance. All exercise helps strengthen bones and muscles to some degree, but weight-bearing exercise and resistance training is especially good in promoting bone density and protecting against osteoporosis. Different exercises help with all sorts of health niggles, such as digestion, poor pos-ture and sleeplessness, and physical activity can be beneficial for a range of medical conditions, from diabetes to lower back pain.

Keep mobile The rewards of improved fitness later in life can be great and there are some that are of particular benefit as you age: ∗ More energy - exercise makes you feel more energetic. ∗ Improved sleep - your body and mind need rest after exercise. ∗ Stable weight - regular exercise helps to keep you at a healthy weight. ∗ Improved circulation and lower blood pressure. ∗ Delayed ageing - keeping active strengthens your muscles, joints and bones as

well as helping with mobility and balance.

Keeping fit adds years to your life and life to your years. No more excuses– do it!

Dear Wendy,

I have been having a bad time recently. I've had panic attacks about dying and my death.. I try to rationalise it

but the moment I sleep I can't. My question is do you see/ feel anything I should be worried about? Is there

anyone there giving me warnings or am I just being silly. I'm quite a stressful person and I fret about everything

but I constantly worry health wise and just wish I could stop as I never used to feel like this. Many thanks …

Hi, When I tune into your energy, my stomach has gone tight and feels like its in knots almost cramp like, my

throat feels like its closing and I just keep swallowing, I feel panic ridden.

When you are getting ready to go to sleep your body and your mind relaxes, when you go into sleep state you raise

your vibration and go out on to the astral plane in dream state, which is where angelic realms reside, so when you

have that dream that’s really vivid you have had a message or communication from a loved one. I feel that when

you start to relax your body starts to panic, you are a very sensitive person and finding yourself overwhelmed in

your dreams as you maybe seeing something in dream state and misinterpreting it as death.

So to answer your question, NO you are NOT going to die and no there are no health problems. To explain a little

more, to me when the death card comes up in a reading, normally it signifies a new beginning and not death as you

perceive it. It can be the end of the old way, the end to stress or a situation that is causing you anguish, so the

death of a situation to allow the new beginning. I think that you are intuitive, which means you have an extra sensi-

tive nervous system and you need to learn how to relax this. Panic attacks are not very nice at all and I have been

there myself, I used to suffer very badly with panic attacks. I learned breathing techniques where you breath in

through the nose slowly and out through the mouth slowly, I know how scary and awful they are but you will not

die from a panic attack. As mentioned you need to switch your brain off as I feel it goes over and over round and

around which is kicking the adrenal in. The adrenals job is for fear fight and flight so if you were a caveman and

getting chased by the sabre tooth tiger your adrenal would kick in to get you out of there pretty quickly , but today

we don’t really need this as much so if you’re lying in bed and the adrenal kicks in because your mind has gone into

overdrive it releases a shot of adrenaline, the result is a panic attack because you have all this energy but nowhere

for it to go and it will take a good hour or so for your system to calm down. The best solutions I have found is medi-

tations, which helps to quieten & calm the mind. I work with special needs children who suffer with quite severe

anxieties and I use a series of cds called Calm kids, by Christiane Kerr, I appreciate they are for children but there

are lovely and relaxing and everyone I recommend them to loves them, they are great to start with and will teach

you relaxation techniques amongst other helpful tips. I have never got to the end of the cd before I’ve fallen

asleep, I also use and recommend these for children who struggle to settle at night, you can leave them on as when

asleep as the subconscious will absorb the information. Meditations don’t have to be weird or a “out there”, its

been clinically proven that a 10 min meditation daily can add years to your life. There are plenty of options availa-

ble to you for help, with anxiety/ panic attacks, so don’t suffer in silence you can seek help from your GP, clinical

hypnotherapist, homeopath, reflexologist. I will be available for courses/ workshops on relaxation meditations and

self development so please contact me if this is something that may interest you.
