Are You in the Exit Row?

"I NEED A VERBAL CONFIRMATION that you are willing and able." If you travel by air, you may be familiar with this request when you sit in an Exit Row on an airplane. Getting the Exit Row seat can be an essential survival strategy for someone who is on a long flight and needs extra leg room.

I’ve had a seat in the Exit Row and personally know these benefits. And I always remember the insistence of the flight attendant waiting for me—in fact needing to hear me—say “Yes” to the question of whether or not I want this seat and all that goes with it.

The reality is this: Seats in an Exit Row are always others-focused seats. In the event of an emergency, I am taking responsibility for others. The flight attendant needs me to take this seriously. I can assure you that if I really want the seat I will need to choose it more for the sake of the person sitting behind me and elsewhere than for my own comfort. Taking the seat, I say “Yes” to sacrifice for others.

Often, if not everyday, we are being asked to “give a confirmation” of just how “authentically” our discipleship extends beyond ourselves. It’s okay to enjoy the extra legroom. Hopefully each day—every week—I live up to the “Yes” I give, the “Amen” I proclaim, on behalf of the need of others … and not just in case of emergency.”

VOLUNTEERS MAKE A LIFE-SAVING DIFFERENCE

In one way or another intentionally stepping out of one’s “comfort zone” can be life-saving for others.

Our parish is part of a network of churches that assists homeless women and children in St. Louis County. We provide a safe place for them to spend the night and serve them both dinner and breakfast.

This outreach program of our parish—known as Room At The Inn—needs volunteers to spend the night with

our guests and van drivers who can pick up and return our guests to the training and support center where they receive daily assistance as they return to more independent living. Our parish sponsors this program one night a month. For more details about volunteering, please see the ar ticle in today’s bulletin.

Extending Hospitality Toward All Welcome Our Visiting Priests

I will be on vacation with one of my classmates for the next few weeks, returning to the parish on September 16th. While I’m away please warmly welcome these resident and visiting priests. Fr. Ray Iwuji, a member of our parish, who will preside for the Eucharist this Saturday evening and for our weekday Masses. For Masses on Sundays, Fr. John Vogler will be with our parish. He is a retired priest of our Archdiocese who’s still serving in our prison ministry and assists with the sacramental needs of parishes. Finally, Jesuit Fr. Ronny ’Dwyer, SJ, of St. Louis University will be here for the 2nd and 3rd Saturdays of the month.

I will be here for Sunday Masses on September 18th, after celebrating Mass with seminary classmates on Saturday—it’s our 50th Anniversary of graduating from high school!

Cook Book update. I am hoping everyone has received the letter about the Parish Cookbook recipes. In the next couple of weeks, there will be a box to drop off the recipes in the Entranc-es of Church. Also, there will be an envelope with extra blank recipe pages if you need more. We are looking forward to collecting great recipes !!

PLANTAR FASCITIS Last week we considered causes of

Plantar Fsciitis. Now the question begs to be asked: WHAT CAN I DO ? No single treatment works best for everyone, but there are many things you can try to get better: • Give your feet a rest. Cut back on activities that

make your feet hurt. Try not to walk or run on hard surfaces.

• Reduce pain and swelling. Try putting ice on your heel. Pain relievers such as Ibuprofen, or naproxen may help.

• Stretch the ligament. Toe stretches, calf stretches and towel stretches repeated several times a day, especially when you get up in the morning, may be helpful.

• Get a new pair of shoes. Pick shoes with good arch support and a cushioned sole. Heel cups or shoe inserts may also be helpful. Be sure to put them in both shoes even if only one foot hurts.

• If these treatments do not help, your doctor may give you splints that you wear at night, shots of steroid medicine in your heel, or other treat-ments. Stay with your treatment. If you don’t, you may have constant pain when your stand or walk. The sooner you start treatment, the sooner you will feel better.

There are opportunities for every parishioner at Holy Name of Jesus to praise God in song. First and foremost is Congregational Singing. Our parish does this exceptionally well whether led by our choirs and instrumentalists, our Youth Group, or organists and cantors. Some parishioners choose to devote more time and energy into music ministry out of a love for singing to our Lord or at the encouragement of others. If you have been gifted with the ability to match pitches (prerequisite for all Choirs) or someone has sug-gested that you sing well, here is a nudge. Consider singing with one of the following Choirs. There is a wide variety of voice types and amounts of time commitment involved. The time spent in rehearsal is enjoyable and rewarding. At least one is suited for you, really.

Holy Name of Jesus Choir – sings one Mass each weekend (with few exceptions), some Holy Days and some holidays. Rehearsals are Wednesdays at 7:00 pm. Open to high school age and up.*

5th Sunday Choir – sings one Mass on a weekend when a 5th Sunday occurs. There are typically 4 one hour rehearsals on varying dates during that particular month. Open to all parishioners who wish to sing in a Choir but find it impossible to commit to the twice weekly schedule of the Holy Name of Jesus Choir.*

Northeast Deanery Children's Choir – sings about one Mass each month (except in Summer) at partic-ipating parishes in the Northeast Deanery. Rehearsals are Tuesdays at 5:30 pm. Open to children in 4th thru 8th grades.*

*These Choirs provide musical leadership and congregational support. They often enhance liturgies with harmony and liturgically or seasonally appropriate anthems.

New Life (Funeral) Choir – sings for Funerals and Memorial Masses usually with two or three days notice. This Choir demonstrates the corporal works of mercy in their ministry to grieving families and is a representation of the Parish's prayers and support. There are no rehearsals. Open to all.

Please consider using your talent for and love of singing in one of these Choirs. You will be happy you did - and happily welcomed! Also, if you know someone who sings well, encourage them to join, or better yet, join together!

Room At The Inn is in need of volunteers RATI is a charity operated by the Sisters of Divine Providence to assist homeless women and children In the St. Louis County area. RATI networks with area churches to provide a safe place for clients to have dinner, spend the night and have breakfast in the morning. Holy Name is one of the network churches. We are looking for people to spend the night and for drivers. RATI meets on the second Wednesday of the month here at Holy Name and the months are rotated among the volunteers. At present, volunteers would be asked to serve every third month. Drivers will pick up guest at the shelter, located on McKelvey Rd. across form DePaul Hospital, about 5pm and using the RATI van will bring the guests to the church. The driver will take the van home for the evening and return to the church at 6:30am to bring the guests back to the shelter. The person spending the night needs to be at the church by 8pm or earlier and will be able to leave in the morning usually by 6am. The person spending the night will not be alone, there will always be at least 2 people from the church spending the night. There are also many other ways you can help with RATI.
