FROM THE PASTOR

2

We, people of faith, specifically Christians, have often as a group been accused of leaving our brain at the church door when it comes to matters of faith. As a Lutheran Christian you might say that we don’t. We believe that God not only has given us faith but has also given us brains. Our brains are not just for outside of church but inside as well. We don’t believe that faith and intelligence are mutually exclusive.

We don’t understand everything about God and the world. There are things we have to just accept on faith, at least for now. But we don’t turn our mind off and we aren’t against science. I think science often is the discovery of what God has created and what God is doing.

Just as we don’t leave our brain at the church door, we ought not leave our faith in the church building. If our faith is just for within the church, it’s almost useless. Our faith in Jesus Christ is to inform how we live our lives. Our faith is to inform everything in life from what we eat, to whom we marry, to who we vote for. If we are followers of Jesus, then our faith in him should be informative. If Jesus isn’t informing us on how we live and the decisions we make, then who or what is?

In confirmation we had a class about making decisions. One of the things we gave the students to think about was, “If Jesus were to appear to you right now, would he be happy with what you are about to do?” It’s kind of like: “What would Jesus do?”

If we are followers of Jesus, which we are, then we ought to be trying to live our lives as he did or at

least how we believe he would want us to live. It’s not always easy to figure out what Jesus wants, but it is what we are called to discern. I know for me it’s difficult. My first inclination is to do what’s in my best interest or at least what I think is best for me and my family. This might not be what Jesus has in mind. I don’t think crucifixion was on his bucket list.

Happy Easter,Pastor Arte Sharot

COUNCIL MEETING MINUTESMarch 8, 2016

Members Present: John Rohan, Roy Harley, Bob Carlson, Jill Cody, Judie Bows, Diane Ringeisen, Linda Seivert, Bill Rice, Kathy Emery, Tom Sasse, Jada Kitzmann, Pastor ArteAbsent: Daryl Mark Roy Harley provided Fellowship.

CALL TO ORDERPresident John Rohan called the meeting to order at 6:30PM. Pastor Arte read from Psalms 26.

APPROVAL OF AGENDAAn addition to the agenda, added is Lynne Rigg regarding a talk here at church, after which Roy made the motion to accept, seconded by Bill and all approved unanimously.

APPROVAL OF MINUTESMotion was made by Judie to approve the minutes from the February meeting and Linda seconded and it was approved unanimously.

FINANCIAL REPORT AND BUDGETFebruary was not a real strong month due to a shorter month and we paid out for boiler repair, and the giving was down. Roy will check on the YTD and MTD figures and get back to us at the next meeting.

STAFF REPORTS Staff reports submitted were approved by the council.

OLD BUSINESSLynne Rigg has shown interest in speaking about her travels. This is tabled until after Easter.A copy of the Constitution/By-Laws were provided to each council member. Please read over, and keep for you to refer to if needed.

Pastor Arte attended the Synod Renew Council Retreat the past weekend and it is something we should all think about for next year. It was quite informative.

Summer Retreat was discussed with some ideas as to where, the when will be July 16 or 23, depending on the location availability.

NEW BUSINESSInstallation of all Council members will be Sunday, March 13th.

Pastor would like to continue to have a Wednesday night service during the summer months to keep the continuity. The service could be from 6:00-6:45pm and advertise that after the service the Concert in the Park would be a place to continue your evening.

Concerns were brought up about plant care, inside and outside. Kathy Emery made a motion to form a committee for plant care and Jada Kitzmann second the motion. 10 yeas, two nays, motion carried. John will speak to the people now responsible for this.

COUNCIL MEETING MINUTES(Continued from page 6)

Daryl will check with Karsten Anderson regarding coming to speak regarding the school referendum coming up in April. Everyone felt this would be helpful to all voters in Red Wing. Possibly this Sunday or Palm Sunday.

Tina will give a short video presentation on Wednesday regarding Smile Amazon.com. A portion of your purchase can now be donated to First Lutheran.

MINISTRY TEAMSWorship and Music: Linda SeifertPlans are in the making for Palm Sunday and Easter.

Property: Bill RiceWe are now getting cleaning supplies from Ace Hardware and should save money. There are tiles and carpeting coming up in a couple rooms downstairs that will need attention. The Cooking Club will have a Spaghetti Fundraiser on April 9th from 4-7PM.

Youth: Bob Carlson and Jada KitzmannThe “Gods Little Angels” is slow to start, but hoping the more kids talk amongst themselves, the numbers will increase.

Media: John RohanJohn reported we will have a new media program that will enhance our on-screen presentations. Hopefully it will be ready in April. With that being said, Pastor asked if we could think about going without paper bulletins and have everything on the screen. Many agreed that we will do it for a trial period of time to get the consensus of the congregation. This will save greatly on printing and paper materials.

Making Connections: Diane RingeisenWork is continuing on the Pew Cards.

Education: DarylNo Report.

Christian Action: Jill Cody and Tom SasseNo Report

Stewardship: Judie BowsShe’s praying for everyone.

Personnel: Kathy EmeryKathy Emery, Personnel, presented the Council with a questionnaire for clarification on the various Church Committees so everyone knows what each committee is responsible for and we have a copy for church records. These are to be returned to Kathy’s mailbox by April 12th.

At 8:40, Pastor Arte led the Council in the Lord’s Prayer. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned by John Rohan at approximately 8:45 PM.

The next Council meeting will be held on Tuesday April 12th at 6:30 PM. Fellowship for this meeting will be by John Rohan.

Respectfully submitted,Diane RingeisenCouncil Secretary
