This lesson plan has been created for second graders

and can also be used in a second grade

ESL classroom

• The students will discuss the

virtue of friendship and

teamwork• Students will retell the story by

acting out teacher selected

scenes from the book using

puppets• Students will complete puzzles

based on teacher selected

sentences from the book-

Chunks of Meaning • To conclude the lesson,

students will hold an open

discussion on friendship and

belonging. Teachers will take

notes to use for future lessons.

• Seal puppet, whale puppet, penguin puppet (3 paper lunch bags)• Word Puzzle (created by us)

To ensure the children

accomplish the objective,

students will have a discussion centered around

friendship, teamwork and

what it means to have

friends. Students will learn

to share and make everyone feel wanted and

needed. We, as the teachers, will take notes

and record what each child

says.

Step 1:Have the children

sit and listen to Three

Friends Together by Hiawyn Oram

teps Step 2: Engage students

using the paper-bag hand puppets. Allow

students to come up in

front of the class and act

out either their favorite

part of the book or a

teacher-assigned page.

children into groups of

four and hand out puzzle

pieces. Encourage students to work together as a team to

solve the sentence puzzles.

Step 4: When all the

groups have finished,

bring the class back together for an open

discussion on friendship

and belonging. Teachers

should be taking notes

to use for future lessons,

as well as to ensure everyone has a fair chance at speaking.

This Three Friends Together lesson plan will

work towards decreasing

self-imposed classroom

segregation, encourage

friendship, and improve

social wellness. Students

will also improve their

team-work skills.
