Museum Auditorium. Susie Gaglia, growing up near active railroads, heard at an early age the captivating call of the lonesome whistle and sounds of trains through day and night. As she grew into adulthood, events in her life evolved so that she had direct contact with railroad operating personnel and, in time, she joined their ranks. Soon Susie became a qualified engineer and pulled countless freight and passenger trains during her 15-year railroad career. While no longer a railroad employee, she continues to be drawn trackside and treasures her memories of her American railroad dream. 7:00 pm “Parallel Tracks: Pennsylvania Railroads and the Model Train Industry.” Presentation by Mr. Ryan Kunkle.A lifelong lover of trains, Ryan Kunkle is presently the director of production for Lionel, LLC. He began work at Lionel in 2011 as manager of social media, then project manager in 2013. Prior to Lionel, Ryan volunteered at and later worked for the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in varying capacities from 1998 to 2011, and wrote web-based model railroading content for About.com for seven years. An active member and past president of the Conrail Historical Society and member of several local and national organizations, Ryan’s work has been published in nationally recognized periodicals, TV and web programs.A graduate of the honors college at Millersville University and the University of Delaware, Ryan holds undergraduate degrees in history and Latin and a master of arts degree in history and museum studies. Ryan currently resides in Concord, North Carolina with his wife and two daughters, the only thing more important in his life than trains.

8:00 pm Members & Volunteers Recognition. We’ll be recognizing our volunteer of the year R. Neil Gruber, as well as our other wonderful volunteers, new members and members with 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35 consecutive years of membership in the Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania.Distinguished service awards also will be conferred, so don’t miss this opportunity to honor Lionel, Preston Cook and John D. Denney Jr.

1:30 pm to 4:00 pm “The Men Who Styled Streamliners.” Presentation by Mr. Preston Cook. Preston Cook, currently an independent railroad consultant, worked for the Electro-Motive Division of General Motors as a railroad fi eld service engineer, training center instructor and district engineer managing accounts with the U.S. government and military services. He also previously provided technical and warranty support for a fl eet of 37 Boise rebuilt F40PH-2C locomotives operating on the MBTA in Boston. Preston is the author of four railroad books and has also authored a number of magazine articles on railroad, marine, naval, military and travel subjects. Please indicate on the Members Day reservation form if you would like complimentary tickets to Preston Cook’s presentation.
