FLorence Price: “The Glory of the Day was in Her Face”Text: James Weldon Johnson

The glory of the day was in her face,The beauty of the night was in her eyes. And overall her loveliness, the graceOf Morning blushing in the early skies.

And in her voice, the calling of the dove; Like music of a sweet, melodious part. And in her smile, the breaking light of love; And all the gentle virtues in her heart.

And now the glorious day, the beauteous night, The birds that signal to their mates at dawn,To my dull ears, to my tear-blinded sightAre one with all the dead, since she is gone.

Hence, Iris, hence away,Far from the realms of day!O’er Scythian hills to the Maeotian lake A speedy flight we’ll take! There Somnus I’ll compelHis downy bed to leave, and silent cell; With noise and light I will his peace molest, Nor shall he sink again to pleasing rest,Till to my vow’d revenge he grants supplies,And seals with sleep the wakeful dragons’ eyes.

My dear one, only you areMy glory, my delight. From the power of the most mighty godsI do not expect a more beautiful gift.

Lawrence has appeared on historical keyboards with the Stanford Baroque Soloists, Stanford Philharmonia, Stanford Symphony Orchestra, and St. Lawrence String Quartet. Aside from his musical and academic pursuits, Lawrence is a vintage fountain pen collector (having founded Stanford’s pen club) and an avid photographer.

thomas coLburn earned a B.S. in Chemical Engineering at Stanford in 2020 and is currently a Ph.D. student in Materials Science and Engineering. He has been taking saxophone lessons since freshman year of his undergraduate studies along with participating in Stanford Wind Symphony and a saxophone quartet. Most recently, his saxophone quartet was selected to perform Michael Colgrass’ Urban Requiem with the Stanford Wind Symphony, though the concert was disrupted by Covid-19. They were also selected as the winners of the Friends of Music Chamber Award for their performance of David Maslanka’s Recitation Book. He loves to perform music from a variety of eras of musical history, from Bach to the present day, as a means to explore the cultural influences and musical innovations that such a journey through a composition conveys. In addition to his love of performing on saxophone, he is the founder and president of the Stanford Gregorian Society for the historical study and use of Gregorian chant.

In addition to music, Laura has won various robotics awards, including first place VEX Robot Skills at the 2018 National Technology Student Association convention in Atlanta, Georgia. Inspired to share her musical experiences with her fellow engineering classmates, Laura founded her school’s first Classical Music Club and annually performed in the HTHS Classical Music Night. As a lover of fashion, Laura took up sewing during quarantine and has upcycled many old clothes. She

I can tell by your smirk, you think this is sillyAnd borderline phobic, perhaps. But this innocent quirkCan cause such a violent reactionMy lungs could collapse.

So, bear with me sir. This is nothing sordid.Your patience, I promise,Will be rewarded.I’m really not bats.Just allergic to cats.

But Julie, Julie loves cats.As you know, they’re her passion and joy.She knits them little sweatersAnd crochets them hats. For their birthdays, she sews themTheir own special toy.

There’s Meowser,Miss Mew,Cookiepuss,Alexander. Her couch is a playgroundOf pee and dander.

So I cough and I wheeze,Pop a fistful of Claritin D’s,Try to hide before anyone sees.I’m allergic to cats.

For over a year,I’ve hidden from JulieEach anaphylactic display.‘Cause she’s such a dear,If she knew cats make me sufferShe’d give them away.

But she is my world,I live for her. Truly.Julie loves cats,And I love Julie. So she tickles their toes,And I smile as my throat starts to close,But I vow that she’ll never suppose.I’m allergic to cats.

But if I dieSee the saga through and do the things you ask of meLet them hate me, hit me, hurt me, nail me to their treeI’d want to know, I’d want to know my GodI’d want to know, I’d want to know my GodI’d want to see, I’d want to see my GodI’d want to see, I’d want to see my God

Why I should die?Would I be more noticed than I ever was before?Would the things I’ve said and done matter anymore?I’d have to know, I’d have to know my LordI’d have to know, I’d have to know my LordI’d have to see, I’d have to see my LordI’d have to see, I’d have to see my LordIf I die, what will be my reward? If I die, what will be my reward?I’d have to know, I’d have to know my LordI’d have to know, I’d have to know my Lord

Why, why should I die?Why should I die?Can you show me now that I would not be killed in vain?Show me just a little of your omnipresent brainShow me there’s a reason for your wanting me to dieYou’re far too keen on ‘where’ and ‘how’ but not so hot on ‘why’

I only want to sayIf there is a wayTake this cup away from meFor I don’t want to taste its poisonFeel it burn me, I have changedI’m not as sure as when we started

Then I was inspiredNow I’m sad and tiredListen, surely, I’ve exceeded expectations?Tried for three years, seems like thirtyCould you ask as much from any other man?
