The Friends of the DCL show their continued support of the Summer Reading Program by sponsoring educational and entertaining events at the library. This year’s summer reading theme “Fizz, Boom, Read” focuses on the wonders of science. Kids will learn about surface tension from Doug the Bubble Man, reptiles from Dan the Snakeman, and observe experiments that go fizz, boom, pop at the Soda Bottle Science Show. Other enter- tainment includes Puppets with Pizzazz, Drawing Stories from Around the World, Music with Donna B, and Morland the Magician. Show times vary so consult the DCL summer program guide for details. New Summer Program Kicks Off at Jamesville Beach Friends of the DCL will be sponsoring a new program to be held at Jamesville Beach. The Library will be offering crafts to beachgoers at Jamesville Beach Park. Jennifer Burke, Children’s Librarian and Kelly Sickler, Paralibrarian for Children’s Services will be host- ing four fun sessions for ages 5 – 10. Activities include making a Muppet (Beaker), creat- ing sand art, and making your own kaleidoscope. (See inside on page 2 for a list of sponsored programs.) Annual Tea Recap On May 17, the Friends of the DCL held its 12 th Annual Tea, hosting Sean Kirst, Post-Standard columnist, as our guest speaker. Over the past years the Friends has set a tradition of presenting programs which entertain, or teach, or encourage us to recollect our lives in Central New York. Sean filled that large order by combining all these in an hour presentation that re- counted favorite articles and stories from his columns; while answering his ques- tion, “Why—more than ever-reading mat- ters!” After Sean’s presentation the audience was invited to a tea reception prepared by members of the Friends. Guests had the opportunity to meet and speak to Sean. Some even supplied him with sto- ries and recollections from their own lives which are worthy of retelling and cher- ishing. The Tea is the major annual fundraiser for the Friends. There is no admission to the event but rather we depend on the good will offering of our guests and sponsors. This year we had record attendance and raised record proceeds to help us fulfill our commitment to the programs of the DCL. Thank you, Sean, for your partici- pation in the Friends’ Tea. Truly, read- ing, more than ever…matters. See pictures from the event inside this issue.

New Volunteer Opportunity: the LOOC Adopt-a-Shelf Program

Would you like to be a DeWitt Community Library volunteer? Do you have a favorite section in the Library? If so, the LOOC Adopt-a-Shelf Program may work for you. Volunteers “adopt” one section of the Library and are responsible for keeping that section organized. Vol-unteers will make sure each item is shelved in the correct location and correct order and is owned by the DeWitt Community Library. Volunteers will also check that each item in their section is in good condi-

tion and that the overall section is neat and clean. Volunteers may earn one Book Sale Buck for each month of service and have their names displayed in their sections. If you’re interested in volunteering and would like more information about the LOOC Adopt-a-Shelf Program, please stop by the Library and pick up a pamphlet or contact Library Assistant Lauri Fortino at [email protected] or call 446-3578.

The DCL’s new online book club, The Cozy Chair begins this June.

Much like a traditional face-to-face book club, The Cozy Chair discussions will offer more opportuni-ties for everyone to share and chat about our favorite books. Currently, there are four groups planned for the initial launch, including Armchair Sleuths for mystery lovers, and Armchair Explorers for popular science readers.

Official book titles for each group are listed in the 2014 Summer Program Guide and online at: dewlib.wordpress.com. Books for the cozy chair dis-cussions are available at the Library. Ask our staff for assistance.

We hope to see you online, commenting, mingling, and sharing your reading experiences with fellow booklovers.
