Vol. XXXXII No. 1 San Diego County, CA Spring 2016 Friends of Cats has been making the rounds of our San Diego community as of late, with a presence at recent and upcoming events this Winter and Spring. In February, the Shelter participated in two adoption events—“Cupids and Canines” at the Grossmont Center shopping mall in La Mesa on February 13, and “Puppy Love” on February 20 at Parkway Plaza mall in El Cajon. The Grossmont Center event featured rescues from around the county and attracted a large crowd. FOC’s booth had a prime position within the mall itself that attracted foot traffic. While some people who stopped by were familiar with the Shelter, many were not, and this provided an opportunity to increase awareness and generate interest in who we are and what we do. One of the cat adoptions at Parkway Plaza left Board Members Julie Tirpak and Terry Hogan with warm hearts. The family included a young girl about age seven who could barely contain her excitement at getting a kitty. She jumped up and down and exclaimed repeatedly, “We’re getting a cat!” As she left with her new companion, she had a smile from ear to ear as she hugged Terry and skipped away. We wish this sort of luck and love for every single one of our cats! Upcoming: On April 30th, FOC will have a booth at the Successful Aging Expo at the Town and Country Convention Center in Mission Valley. This event showcases an array of services for seniors through a combination of seminars, workshops and exhibitors. FOC is the only animal welfare group participating, and our objective is to highlight the benefits of our Lifetime Care Program, which offers full-time residency for cats whose owners can no longer provide for their care. Participants in the program can make arrangements for their cats’ future care through their estate planning. This program is a unique feature of Friends of Cats, and we look forward to engaging with a new audience. Also on our calendar—and yours too, we hope—is the San Diego County Fair. We will have a booth at the Fair on June 25 and 26. When you visit the Fair that weekend, be sure to stop by and talk with our volunteers and board members and see what’s new at the shelter. (And don’t forget our upcoming Cinco de Meow at the Shelter on May 7th—see next page for details!) Our Mission StatementTo maintain a Shelter for homeless and

unwanted cats with the goal of placing all healthy cats into loving, adoptive homes

while providing a sanctuary for cats that are terminally ill, considered unadoptable, or whose owners have prearranged for their

continued lifetime care. In a nurturing, rehabilitative environment, we ensure the

health of all cats entrusted to our care, promote spaying and neutering, and resort to euthanasia only as a matter of compassion for

cats whose terminal illness causes suffering.

No, this is not a big white owl—it’s our funny girl, Gwendolyn, who could give Grumpy Cat a run for his money. Gwendolyn is 3 years old, and while she obviously loves people—judging from her eager dash to greet visitors and bestow grateful leg-rubbings—she will let you know when she’s had enough affection, thank you, with a dismissive wave of her paw. (Perhaps “Princess” Gwendolyn would fit her better?) In any event, she is a lovely girl who would be a great companion for someone who appreciates a cat with an opinion.

Noshie (above) and Munchie (below) are the best of friends. They came to us as a bonded pair, having spent years together in the same household. When their owner passed away, however, they were relinquished to Friends of Cats. Munchie, whose name reflects his favorite pasttime, is a big cuddly black and white boy. Noshie is a lovely female tortie; both are five years old. A dual adoption is required, as these two would be heartbroken to be separated. Together as a loving and frolicksome team, these longtime companions stand to bring much pleasure to their forever home.

Meet A Few of Our Adoptable Cats

Friends of Cats has a periodic circumstantial need for foster families, and is seeking interested, quali- fied parties to call upon as that need arises. If you have experience with fostering, or have a home environment conducive to helping house and care for a cat on a short-term basis, please contact the Shelter for more information.

42 pedigreed cat breeds were represented this January at “The Biggest Cat Show in the West,” and amongst the glitter and glamor of competition were some of our very own Shelter cats. Making an appearance at the FOC booth in the Del Mar Fairgrounds were Deb, a longhaired black and white tuxedo cat, age 4, and Nova, a nine-year-old Tortie/Siamese mix. Both came away with merit awards—Deb with three merits in the domestic shorthair category, and Nova with one merit for being cooperative while serving as the model of mixed-breed behavior at the Education Center. Both were also adopted by the end of the first day.

Ned, a feisty nine-month old male ginger tabby, wasn’t chosen for the Education ring, but his frisky and loveable antics at the FOC booth brought many offers of adoption. In fact, the following day, a couple who had admired him came to the Shelter and claimed Ned as their own. With his departure, FOC has found homes for all six cats it rescued from a recent Riverside hoarding case, in which an elderly man died without any provision for his 78 felines (see Cat Tales, Fall 2015 issue).

On the second day of the cat show, only two cats, Cammie and Ollie, were in the FOC booth. Both were very shy about the commotion around them, with Cammie so buried in her blanket that she was nicknamed ”Burrito.”  A lovely tortie girl of 11 months, she still got attention from our visitors and was adopted at the Shelter the next day.

The booth almost ran out of copies of Cat Tales, and many old friends stopped by to recount their stories of adopting our Shelter cats through the years. Our donation bowl brought in $193, new memberships $10. We thank the San Diego Cat Club for putting on such a wonderful competition of fancy felines, and giving over a dozen cat shelters their own booths to show that a classy ancestry is not everything. Shelter cats can be beautiful—and very grateful.

It takes a champion–or at least an experienced show cat—to endure the rigors of hands-on judging. These cats handle the moves with grace, patience, and style!

Friends of Cats will occasionally receive calls about cats going outside of the litter box. Sadly, this is often a reason some cats are relinquished to the Shelter. The following information may help you determine what the issue is and what steps should be taken to alleviate or eliminate the problem.

If you have a cat that suddenly starts going outside the litter box, have your cat checked by a vet as soon as possible, since this change in behavior can be indicative of a medical problem such as a urinary tract infection.

If medical issues are ruled out, there are multiple factors to consider that may be causing the problem. Be aware that changes to your environment or routine can create anxiety in your cat, and it can begin marking its territory as a result. For example, an owner’s schedule changes or absences, adding a new family member or losing one, home environment changes such as moving, remodeling, or just rearranging furniture, and even weather changes can all trigger stress in our cats that result in their going outside of the box. Also, cats can be very sensitive to our feelings, so if we are stressed, they can become stressed, too.

If you have more than one cat, you will need to isolate the cats from each other to determine who is going outside if the box. Ideally, there should be one litter box per cat, and each box must be cleaned regularly.

Try changing the litter itself. There are many products available on the market. Some cats become more sensitive as they get older, and may prefer unscented litter, or a different texture. Some people even use dirt or sand instead of litter. Also, as cats get older, they may have more difficulty with mobility, so make sure senior cats have a box that’s easy to access and step in and out of.

Another option is to place the litter box in the spot where your cat has been eliminating. Once your cat starts using the box consistently, you can reposition the box in a more convenient location.

Make sure to thoroughly clean the area where your cat has been going. Remaining urine odor will attract a cat right back to the same place. There are a variety of products that can help eliminate urine odor to deter re-marking. Ask your vet or pet store clerk for suggestions.

These are just a few common reasons why a litter box trained cat may start going outside of the litter box. Consult with your vet for additional help with your particular situation.

Friends of Cats wishes to extend its thanks to Board Members Ed and Gayle Kane for their generous donation of new glass-paned doors for Cozy Cottage, which houses our Lifetime Care cats. The new doors greatly enrich the cats’ environment by illuminating the interior with natural light, allowing them to bathe in pools of sunlight, and engage with the outside world without venturing out on the screened-in verandas. They also look beautiful. See below—happy cats!

A special “thank you!” is warranted to a true friend of cats, attorney Gayle Eskridge, for her very generous donation towards our special needs cat Poe’s cleft palate surgery. Gayle has been an ongoing supporter of FOC for over 25 years, including time spent as a board member. Poe, whose story was in the previous issue of Cat Tales, has generated an outpouring of good will and donations. Her rare condition is operable once she is at least ten months old. Many thanks to Gayle for helping us move one step closer to making this possible for Poe.
