As 2020 comes to a close, many of us will reflect on the challenges we faced, how well we each rose to meet them, and what we are looking forward to in the year ahead. While it’s unlikely anyone has thoroughly enjoyed the past year, its events have shaped our new reality. Here at New London Hospital (NLH), we are hopeful the coming year will be brighter as we acknowledge 2020 as an opportunity to learn, adapt and inform our goals for 2021.

While the pandemic delayed several of our initiatives this year, in October we were still able to make the successful migration to Epic–the same electronic health

record system used at Dartmouth-Hitchcock (D-H) and many other health care institutions across the country. This also included the transition to the myD-H patient portal, which conveniently and securely connects patients with their health information and access to their providers. Epic

enhances our system relationship as a member of Dartmouth-Hitchcock Health (D-HH) and aligns with our mission to provide our patients with the best possible care.

We are pleased to offer the specialty services that are a direct result of D-HH membership, but we must also adapt to the ever-evolving health care landscape to ensure sustainability. One of our major projects for 2021 will be the launch of Express Care. This will fill a gap in our service region for patients with acute symptoms that require evaluation the same day, addressing conditions such as rashes, tick bites, sports injuries and minor cuts that need stiches. Our hope is to have Express Care operational in the spring of 2021, and we will provide updates as the project progresses.

The entire staff of NLH extends its appreciation to our community members for all their support this year. It’s been uniquely challenging, and the patience and understanding demonstrated represent the true character of a community dedicated to family, health and kindness. We hope your holidays are filled with the same, and wish you well for the New Year.

  • Early in 2019, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced that 2020 would be the Year of the Nurse. In January, it seemed we would be highlighting the extraordinary life of Florence Nightingale, who was born on May 12, 1820, making 2020 the 200th year anniversary of her birth. Considered the founder of modern nursing, Nightingale became the first woman to receive the exclusive British Order of Merit.

  • As COVID-19 rapidly progressed, the courageous role of nurses was evident in hospitals around the globe–along with public appreciation and support for their tremendous contributions. The WHO was certainly ahead of the curve when it declared 2020 the Year of the Nurse.

“It’s been such a challenging year,” says Sally Patton, Chief Nursing Officer, New London

Hospital (NLH). “I’m so proud of the way our nursing staff stepped up to meet the changing demands of this crisis, but I’m also not surprised. We have such a talented and focused group of nurses.”

The team of devoted nurses at NLH and Newport Health Center (NHC) continues its daily mission and passion for excellent health care.

“The commitment and compassion our nursing team exhibits is impressive to observe on a daily basis,” said Tom Manion, president and CEO of NLH. “The dedication of each nurse is not only impactful–it’s also truly heartwarming.”

As 2020 comes to a close, please join NLH as we share our appreciation for our wonderful nursing team in photos.

Kirk Dufty, MD, has been named Chief Medical Officer of New London Hospital (NLH). Dufty joins NLH from Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC), where he worked as an emergency medicine physician and served as the emergency medicine medical director. Prior to joining DHMC, he was emergency department medical director and then the chief medical information officer at Rutland Regional Medical Center.

“I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to work with the dynamic leadership team at NLH,” said Dufty. “My immediate plan is to listen to the staff, learn as much as possible and be available. There are many challenges ahead, but if we combine open communication, shared determination and creativity, we can achieve our goals.”

A native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Dufty received his medical degree from the University of Colorado School of Medicine and did his training in emergency medicine at Cook County Hospital in Chicago before moving to New England.

“We are excited Dr. Dufty has decided to join us. He brings well over a decade of experience in physician management roles, and will provide

tremendous value as we update and improve our service models,” said Tom Manion, president and CEO of NLH.

Since Dufty arrives from within the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Health (D-HH) System, he understands the value of this partnership and the overarching goals of D-HH.

“Our system is maturing and becoming more holistic. Taking into consideration the health care landscape in New Hampshire, I think our employees and the community understand the importance of being stronger together,” said Dufty.

Dufty lights up when he talks about his wife, Patricia Lanter, MD, and their four children. While three are now adults and have moved out of the house, their 15-year-old daughter, Hope, is still at home. Hope has Down syndrome, and is very active with skiing and swimming.

“Hope has an amazing spirit and will surprise you with her jokes and humor,” Dufty said. “She has us in stiches most of the time!” The family resides in Norwich, Vermont.
