A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENTIt is an honor to serve as President of your Board of Directors for the upcoming year. The Board composition this year features four first time members who will complement the seven members who remain from last year. I am particularly excited about the input the new board members will bring and look forward to this being a year where we can begin to identify and accomplish the things that are most important to our membership. Toward that end, we are in the process of planning a series of member focus groups that will assist us in building a survey that will identify member concerns and preferences in order to help guide the direction of the club. Lots of infor-mation about this process will reach you in the coming weeks and months.

Your Board of Directors collectively believes that there is no more important function of the Board than effective communication with the membership. Thus, the first action taken by the Board this year was to establish a new committee called the Membership Commu-nication Committee that is charged with advising the Board with respect to incoming and outgoing membership communications at all levels of the club. I have asked John Gilboy to chair that committee and I am sure he will provide effective leadership and direction in reviewing the methods and content of information to be solicited from and distributed to our members.

In addition to John Gilboy, the committee chairs this year are: David Gomez, Finance, R.C. Harlan, Legal and By-Laws, Luis Michel, Golf Shop and Tournaments, Kristine Chung, Membership and Marketing, Rick McGill, Greens, Eric Cheng, Long Range Planning, Dave Esgro, House, Carl Miller, Social and Mitch Carty, Tennis, Fitness and Junior Programs.

Our club remains a terrifically enjoyable home away from home with a strong and diverse membership. Let’s all work together to make our club the best it can be.

Cheers,

Corey Ford , President

Friendly Hills Country Club Welcomes Chef Peter Phan

Over the course of more than 15 years, Chef Peter Phan has devel-oped quite the eclectic background. While attending culinary school at the Art Institute of California, Peter supplemented his education with practical experience at Five Feet Restaurant, a fine-dining French-Asian fusion restaurant in Laguna Beach. There, Peter learned the importance of not only creating delectable meals but offering aestheti-cally pleasing presentations as well.

After attending culinary school, Peter worked at Alta Vista Country Club. There, he continued enhancing his culinary experience while simultaneously embracing the service aspect of the job, a vital compo-nent of the restaurant industry.

Ultimately, Peter found his way to becoming the Executive Chef for Nordstrom, working at various locations throughout Southern Califor-nia, from starting them up (one of the three chef ’s selected nationwide to commence the Nordstrom Café Bistro in Fashion Island in Newport Beach) to helping them all thrive. Beyond the exceptional customer service that Nordstrom instills, Nordstrom provided Peter with the foundation for the management experience he demonstrates today.

After Nordstrom, Peter took on even greater responsibility while working as the Executive Chef of SeaCliff Country Club hosting hundreds of events from fine dining and multi-course wine dinners to large weddings and tournaments. Peter’s dedication and creativity, both in plating and in taste, generated the acclaim he received not only among SeaCliff members but in Orange County news as well. Peter also served as the lead chef for the 2014 Rose Bowl and NCAA BCS National Football Championship Tailgate events providing food to more than 40,000 people.

On a personal level, Peter married his wife, Erica, on April 5, 2014. Together, they enjoy watching movies, traveling, and enjoying the aspects of Peter’s culinary background, from cooking at home to trying eccentric foods on vacation trips such as Napa, Hawaii and Japan (Peter returned home from Japan just before starting at Friendly Hills).

Peter welcomes new ideas, constructive criticism and challenges. Peter is extremely excited to become a member of the Friendly Hills team and eagerly awaits the opportunity to serve you - as a member, as an aficionado but, most of all, as a friend.

RALLY FOR THE CUREOn October 21, 2015, Missy Reyna hosted FHWTA’s annual “Rally For The Cure” Tennis Tournament, benefitting the Susan G. Komen Foundation and Breast Cancer Research. The players and their guests enjoyed ‘Round Robin’ play and a special skills clinic hosted by our talented and patient USTA Professional Jorge Schneider.

Winning the tournament was our old friend Trang Sanders with 13 wins. Trang also provided delicious chocolate party favors for the players and their guests. Following play, the ladies enjoyed a wonderful luncheon and a terrific raffle with many lovely prizes. By the end of the day, Missy achieved her goal of exceeding last year’s fundraising total, raising $1600. 00! A big THANK YOU to Missy for all of her hard work, and to our members and guests for supporting this very worthy cause.

The Carols swept the field!

Carol Ann in first place. Carole in second and Carol in 3rd. Hostesses were Missy, Susan and Jennifer (who wasn’t there but did supply something I think) We only had 6 players so Jorge did a clinic with 2 players while 4 would play a round. Six players and 3 of them named Carol?

OF COURSE

Hello from the Golf CourseMaintenance Department ~

There is no doubt that our depart-ment is pleased to say goodbye to the hottest October in the past 11 years. With the much cooler nights

and daytime highs in the upper 70’s and low 80’s we are seeing the recovery in both fairways and greens that we have been working for.

The cooler winter months bring about a new set of chal-lenges that are a welcome change from the summer. We are working to keep green speeds and firmness in a range that keeps the course enjoyable by all levels of golfers. Speed and firmness come much more easily in the winter months, so our staff continues to monitor these variables and make adjustments to our practices accordingly.

During the fairway recovery period, I have been asked why we would mow the areas that had been infected by grey leaf spot and kikuyugrass decline. While these areas are re-covering and are still thin, the kikuyugrass plant, if left un-mown will utilize the energy it has for growth in a vertical manner. By mowing the turf once per week, we alleviate much of the traffic stress but also encourage the kikuyu-grass plant to grow more laterally rather than vertically.

We are at the end of the Landscape Enhancement Proj-ect. The final pieces of plant material are being installed around the lake on 1 and 18 and the walk paths on holes 1,4,6,8,9,10 and 16. I truly would like to thank all of you for your patience throughout this project. I know that it has been very busy and congested around the course since mid-June. By this time next year, you will really be able to see what these newly created zones will look like and the positive addition they will make to Friendly Hills.

We are testing out a piece of equipment called the Sand-Man developed by H.Barber and Sons. The unit is designed to automatically screen out rocks and debris from bunkers. We have only had it for one day, but the unit looks very promising as a tool to help reduce the intrusion of small stones into several of our bunkers. Look for it in use over the next couple of weeks.

While there is still a very strong forecast for El Niño, the month of November is actually going to be one of the driest on record. The heaviest rains will not begin to arrive until the first quarter of 2016. We are still finalizing the locations of the straw waddle that will be installed to help prevent as much movement or loss of mulch as possible.Thank you for your continued support,

Michael WolpoffGolf Course Superintendent
