This past year has been unlike anything we could have ever expected, to say the least. With the unprecedented effects of

COVID-19, we have had to learn how to adapt to change quickly. No one could have imagined the impact that this pandemic would have on our families, community, and the world overall. We feel thankful to have had such a strong, supportive circle during such a difficult time.

We started the year out with a bang, cultivating friendships with each of our unique members through various activities, experiences and outings. We hosted a “Hearts and Hugs for Heroes” event that honored all our veterans by personally introducing them and sharing their time and place of service, as well as all of their awards and achievements. On site, our member’s days were filled with a variety of activities, including riding bicycles and hot rods around town, taking walks on the beach, spending time with the many animals we welcomed into the center, and participating in our innovative day program classes. Our time together consisted of laughing, learning, celebrating, hugging, and holding hands. On March 13th, with the shutdown of both of our locations due to the pandemic, it was hard to believe that the next time we would all be together was unknown.

We had to become creative in how we would still deliver interactive and engaging activities to our members – virtually. We worked hard to create activities that members would be eager to log on to, and a model that could be sustained for however long we needed to be virtual, until we could safely invite everyone back to the center. We accomplished this plus more, expanding our virtual activities to accommodate people from other senior centers, all the while providing the same engaging, fun, educational activities and classes that everyone knew and loved. Our daily schedule included innovative activities to choose from, ensuring that our members would maintain a well-rounded day from the comfort of their own living room.

Over the past year, everyone’s resilience has been tested, and we have had to lean on each other for support and guidance. Even with all the uncertainty that this pandemic has brought, we will always be here for families, caregivers, and their loved ones. The friendship and support we provide extends far beyond the walls of our center. We are so grateful for the continued kindness and generosity of our community that keeps us going, even through difficult times.

The greatest factor in keeping my 83-year-old mom fully engaged and safe during the pandemic has been her participation in the Friendship Center’s Zoom classes. The teachers are patient, loving, and friendly with her. Every day she lets me know how many Bingo games she won, compliments she received, and artwork she created. This is a vital service for Santa Barbara and I thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
