This month we open our annual “Friends of the Heralds" Program, one that is led by a wonderful Baritone, Mr. Marty Port. Marty sends letters to past contributors, as well as inviting new folks to help support the Heralds organization. The Heralds of Harmony is a big family made up of current members, alumni, past members and patrons.

The Heralds have very generous FOH contributors and sincerely appreciate this confidence in us with your support. We know that we are a part of your generosity and charitable giving and thank you for choosing the Heralds to receive your gift.

I am sometimes asked, “How will my gift be used?” FOH gifts help the Heralds continuously improve with our investment in new music, recruiting new members, and for performing at the highest level of a cappella singing. Our Chapter invests FOH revenue for the future as opposed to operational expense.

FOH gifts are tax-deductible; we are a 501 c(3) entity. All gifts are acknowledged by a letter from our Treasurer for tax filing purposes. If you have not participated in the FOH Program but would wish to do so, send me an email at [email protected]. I will send you the FOH packet of instruction.

Harmony Foundation Seeks CEOby Roxanne Clapp, Editor

Sharon Miller, chair of the Harmony Foundation Board of Trustees, notified us that Clarke Caldwell is no longer with the Foundation, effective July 11, 2016. Expressing gratitude for Clarke's 13 years of leadership, the Board and staff members wish him all the best for the future.

At the direction of the Board of Trustees, Sharon Miller is now serving as President and CEO of HFI, as the Board's Nominating Committee embarks on a CEO search.

A strong and vibrant board leadership confidence is high that the momentum the Foundation has experienced will continue. According to Ms. Miller, in the past nine months, almost 700 new donors have joined the Harmony Foundation family. The Legacy of Harmony Endowment Fund has received $7.5 million in new commitments to ensure the long-

term impact of the Barbershop Harmony Society. The Foundation is a debt-free organization and is contributing $1.8 million to needed programs and needful organizations this year alone.

The Barbershop Harmony Society and Harmony Foundation are positioned to make a significant difference in efforts to keep the whole world singing. This year, tens of thousands of people have been impacted by investments by members of the Harmony Foundation, but the work has just begun.

It was so great to see everyone at the rehearsal and CD recording session Saturday, August 8, 2016.

You sound AMAZING! I am really looking forward to the finished CD. It is going to be quite the work of art. So many people have asked us in the lobby at the shows over the past few years if there was a CD of the Heralds available. They are in for a treat! It has been a long time coming.

Many people don't understand all that goes into the making of a CD, or the legalities and copyrights involved. BMI is one of three major music-licensing companies that collect annual fees from those that play music, then pay the songwriters and producers of that music.

Did you read the article in the Tampa Bay Times in June about local businesses being sued by

BMI for playing copyrighted music without paying the proper fees? You can read the story online at: http://www.tampabay.com/news/business/tampa-bay-businesses-are-sued-for-playing-copyrighted-music-without-paying/2282346 . Copyright rules are pretty strict, and it can be devastating financially for those that don't comply.

When the recording is done, the mastering work will be completed, the artwork will be created, the CDs will be produced and THEN we can all buy them and hear the Heralds sing at our leisure! Watch for more details about the release in the coming months.

Rehearsal Notes - July 11, 2016Theme for Tonight from our Leader: “Motivated men -- all with the same goal -- will make a huge difference. We are working for Vegas, right now. 90% of what we are trying to achieve will come from spirit and motivation displayed per man!

Having said that, last night was, in my book, the best rehearsal we’ve had this year. I was particularly proud of the fact that one of Tony’s central teachings of “forward placement” was in evidence from the start. Sure, we required a bit of reminding, but more attention was paid to resonant singing than reminding each to be forward. (Baritones, you could have made it a slam...more work needed from this section on placement.)

I encourage each man, particularly those who weren’t with us, to watch the videos on Eyes Medley and Time After Time. I’ll try and capture the highlights here, but there is simply too much gold that you must catch up on before we next get together.

Warm Ups/General Comments

• Baritones and Basses, in particular, sing with more expanded sound by feeding air and space while maintaining that good forward placement. Baritones...that’s particularly important when you are #3 in the chord stack.

• Baritones...we need to reach that point where we aren’t being reminded to be in head voice in our upper register. We’ll be doing some one on one work with this critical element.

• Basses: on “up” intervals, work to be as high as possible on the pitch. Over-shoot the interval!!

• Congratulations on singing with forward placement. Equally important is singing with resonant space

• Sing to the production you know, not to the vowel targets. Good vocal production is EVERYTHING! Learn to rely and have confidence in good production.

• Do you like “raisins” or “coconuts?” There is a correct answer to that question

Eyes Medley (PLEASE watch the videos on this contest piece. Just too much to write down here!)

• Make every word syllable sound interesting..not just every word. Shape, change and add dynamic interest even when the notes

go by fast. DO stay within the dynamic plan, but tell the story that the music demands be told.

• Speaking of dynamics. More artistry in words, sounds and dynamics is critical. Remember our discussion on “My heart is jumping.” Draw the audience in with the dynamic change.

• NEW THOUGHT: When you come off of a well produced breath, you are at your biggest dynamic possibility with what comes next. So, to sing softly on the next phrase, you need to think. Singing softly still requires resonance, forward placement, open singing...but soft.

• We need more clarity in the rhythm throughout. Keep this song moving forward with the rhythmic intent.

• NEW: The breath is out for harmony parts in measure 73. Energize right through it. NO BREATH in 73!

• Do something with the important words: “cute’, “love”, “you”, “your”. Those words, and others, mean something, and you will need to do something with those kinds of words to convey the message to the point where our audience isn’t thinking about HOW we are singing but WHAT we are saying.

• More physicality needed. STAND UP and sing...no more barbershop crouches.

Time After Time (PLEASE watch the video. You need this information to stay with us.)

• In the opening phrases of the chorus, m 17-18, all have a generally downward sloping melodic phrase. Work hard to keep pitch up on these falling intervals. In fact, the second time you say “time” in the opening phrase, it needs to be more brilliant than the first!

• BASSES: In measure 49, on the word “Know”, sing the E, as written and when directed drop an octave to the lower E. Sing measure 50, as written. If you need more instruction on this, please listen to 37:19 through 38.35 on the video.

• This is a happy song, not matter of fact, or sad. Show that emotion.

• Each of the phrases in this song need more ebb and flow. Some is directed, but some is up to the individual singer to add more artistic interpretation to the phrases. The requirement for “Zoompahs!” abounds!

• In measure 27, “one you run to see”...the very words suggest that we move more quickly through that phrase, not plodding along, but running to see!

• In the beginning verse, less smoky coloring (breathy, airy) from harmony parts. Sing forward, with resonance. Leads will add a little “smoke” to the line.

Christmas Songs: Feel free to listen to the video. We did work on some of these songs, but the real lessons, even for these songs, are found above.

• ALL: You need to spend more time on the 5 songs we need to have ready for July 23. The 5 songs we will likely record on that date are:

• Mary, Did You Know

• O Come, O Come Emmanuel

• O Come, All Ye Faithful

• Silent Night

• Joy, to the World

• We need you to be qualified on these 5 songs. Due to recording, we can’t use paper on the stage. Songs, on IPads will be acceptable (although not the best option) but no paper.

Same song set for next week! I can’t wait to hear how we sound.

Rehearsal Notes - July 23, 2016 Fantastic Day, today, guys. We got a LOT done!

I’m so proud of you guys! Great attendance...great attention...great singing...great progress!

“We could have danced all night!” Who said we’d be too tired tonight to do some serious choreo work on Eyes Medley! This group of singers amazing...you all just keep working and working. Be proud!

On that note, thank you DREW for leading us in some choreo work. You’ll want to review that 25 minute segment in its entirety to pick up on all of his points, but here were a few of the highlights:

• Do something different with your choreo. For this package to look fresh, it needs to be fresh...even to you! So, do something next time that you haven’t done before. Try a different approach in the “presentate” parts of the song so that it stays interesting to you. Do more than you think you are doing and more than you’ve ever done before. This single tip, will add real points to our scores!

• By the way, scores are earned from the very first moment the song starts. So, move from the very first moment of the song, not just the first planned choreo move.

• Use your upper triangle more than you ever have before.

• STAND UP! Yeah, this is new, but we want to eliminate the ‘barbershop crouch’ from our performance. Stand tall, be proud, show grounded confidence (without being arrogant, of course).

• When does “Eyes Medley” begin? The answer may surprise you, but it starts from the very second Tony turns from the audience after accepting applause and looks you in the eye. Can you out perform him, at that very moment? Meet him where he is!!

• What’s more important? The music or the choreo? (Do I really need to answer that for you?) We need to convey the story of the song through the words of the song, and use your body to help tell that story. Sing to the value of the words!

• When singing softer, avoid that tendency to crouch.. Sure you can lower your body, but do it by moving straight down by bending your knees, not crouching forward and mucking up your mechanism.

• “Dreamy” is a head move than a body move.

Warm Ups/General Tips

• Work for that brilliant LIFT in your singing all the time. Sing forward with lots of resonant space, but don’t use more pressure to achieve that brilliance. Keep your production relaxed and open.

• Remember, when you are moving from root to the third...it’s

further than you think...it’s actually 4 half steps higher than root!

• When you work with double, singable consonants (as illustrate in the warm up phrase of ‘loan, loan, loan’) work to ensure that you sing the full value of the singable “n” to the “l”.

• Get in performance mode almost all of the time (well not really...get there ALL of the time...even in warm ups.) You are doing so much better with this, but go back to what Drew talked about tonight...do something different and do more...all the time

• Each of us needs to brush up on the notes and words of our Christmas rep.

Do You Hear What I Hear?

• Basses: be more precise in the dotted eighth/sixteenth note rhythms in measure 2, 4, 6, etc. This rhythm is important to the majesty of the song.

• For the top three parts, do take a quick breath as the soloist is beginning each verse as in measure 4. It’s a quick but important breath.

• On the transition for “ooo” to “aaah” in measure 13, we all need to lift into the “aah” and make sure that we keep good forward placement on that transition. We are transitioning from a closed vowel to an open one, (or a closed aperture to a larger one) both of which have a tendency to let the production drop if you aren’t aware of it and work to maintain that good forward placement. Try to maintain that lower jaw positioning and lift the soft palate when making that transition. The key is maintaining good vocal positioning on the “ooo” and actually improving that vocal production on the “aaah.”

• Each verse has more presence and volume than the one preceding it.

• Basses and Baritones need to lead out on the minor triad on the “aah” in measure 13. (Tenors supply the minor third, and the leads are least important here as they are merely doubling the root.)

• BASSES: You do not move in measures 20-21. All other parts move here, but you do not. Capisce? Don’t make me chase after you

Angels We Have Heard on High

• Baritones, but applies to all, on “Gloria” section of first verse, we are going from a wonderfully produced high register section to a more normal, comfortable, signing voice by the end of the passage. We need to maintain that same “alignment” of sound and not lose the production as we descend. Use more forward placement as you descend.

• It was applied to basses, but works for everyone, hold the vowel target to its full value on the ending of the Gloria passages.

• Basses did some fantastic work throughout this song, but if you want to hear something spectacular, go back and listen to 20:01 to 21:05 in this song.

Little Drummer Boy

• Harmony parts, please put more “pohm” in your “pums”! (You don’t hear that phrase every day, do you?)

• Until ‘Then He smiled at me ...', each verse in the song has more presence and brilliance than the one preceding it.

• Leads and tenors, in the first verse be aware of the soft volume requirements, while the Bass clef singers add more presence in their sound to support that beautiful lead line.

• HOMEWORK: The success of this song will depend on how much we can tighten up the accuracy of the first two verses. Please work on these prior to next week. We will do sectionals on these two verses next week.

• Drum parts need to be richer and louder. A little more chest voice is needed.

Silent Night

• Baritones, please be accurate on the note changes in measures 71 and 75. They are important, so please move at the right time. The change comes in the upbeat, in both places.

• Leads, there is a breath after “face” in measure 73. Tony doesn’t want to direct that breath due to the continuity required in the other three parts.

• Harmony parts, there are several moving notes that need more shaping and richness as you move through the phrases. That means more motion, crescendoing through those notes.

• When we get to the word “Jesus” in measure 78, all need a bigger, warmer, richer sound

Time After Time

• Good work in remembering the tag! It’s going to be great!

• In measure 58, the three moving parts (not lead) need to pull through that note change on the word “time.

What a great evening! This chorus is doing fantastic things right now and working on a level we didn’t even dream about a year ago...with even more to come. See you next week, when we will continue work on our contest pieces, do some sectional work on the 2nd verse of Silent Night, and continue to polish up Mary, Did You Know, Do You Hear What I Hear?, Angels We have Heard on High, and Little Drummer Boy for our CD. Watch for the distribution of Away in the Manger, which will be posted to Groupanizer this week. We’ll plan on recording this song in September, so get it down and off paper as soon as possible.

Theme of the night!: Let’s Make Beautiful Music! We’ve made tremendous progress in becoming that chorus we aspire to be. Our next step: is to consistently grow past the simple--albeit good -- singing of notes, words and phrases and “make music.”

Choreo Pointers. Thank you DREW for continuing to exhort us to make beautiful music by becoming more believable in our overall performance. As with some of our musical notes, performance notes must become part of our “go-to” operating procedure, making the HOH way. This is up to every man in the chorus.

• Try not to be the “same-same” in your approach to your own performance. Do something different. Remember the phrase, “great big beautiful eyes.” There are different ways to show what you mean here. There is the playful statement, the excited statement, the loving statement, etc., all of which convey something different by the WAY you perform. Find those different ways and use them for your individual performance.

• Stand Tall! and be proud. Consciously, eliminate the “barbershop crouch.” Commonly, we revert to that old “crouch” coming out of phrases, at the start of the song, on resets back to C-1, following big phrases into something soft. Be aware of those. STAND UP! That’s the HOH way!

• Expand visually with the music. Take a look at measure 23 and the expansion of sound that occurs on the word “again” through that whole measure. Physically show that.

• HOMEWORK: Go back and read the words in this score with fresh eyes. (Yeah, really do this!) There is “something" happening with every single phrase in this song. Go back and read the song again and think what you might do differently with your personal performance to show the intent as if you weren’t singing the song. As just one example, how would you physically show the phrases “I just can’t resist you” or “I fell in love with you?” if you couldn’t use any words to let your sweetie-pie know those things? Show us!

• Take stock of your personal plan and know how you can best contribute to the team effort. Sometimes that may mean not singing! WHAT!!? How can that be helpful? As one example, if there is one part that is just too difficult for you, there is no shame in that. Self-select the right play for the team by just not singing where you are not helping the team sound. Stand there, emote like crazy, with no sound and you will be a fully productive, team member in the process

Warm Ups/General Tips

• Remember that noisy breath? It happens because at the end

of a phrase with a nice dropped larynx, where you raised that larynx to take the breath, creating a shallow, noisy breath. Maintain good positioning when taking a breath with the right vocal positioning.

• So is there an HOH way on how to sing intervals? I’m really glad you asked. YES!: On descending intervals the gap is smaller than you think. On ascending intervals, the gap is larger than you think. We’ve been talking about this since ... Always. :-) Its time that we put this concept into play on intervals each and every time. It is the HOH way, and will nearly eliminate the few pitch issues we encounter. Can we agree? We shouldn’t need any more reminders.

• As long as we’re at it, BARITONES, can we agree that we don’t need any more reminders on when to be in head voice? If you have any doubts, please talk to Charlie so that we can clear this up. I’m going to find you!

• Please stop listening to your learning media once you’ve qualified on notes and words. Use rehearsal videos instead. Continuing to use the original learning media only hurts you in adopting the newer interpretations. This is really important, guys!

Silent Night

• In this song, there were several places where moving parts, particularly in harmony parts, needed much more movement and artistry, in order to make that beautiful music. Moving notes, just like held notes, require shape, destination, dynamic changes to avoid just singing the notes and words as they appear on the printed page. Make music!

• Singing to the production! Don’t allow the vowel sounds, or the words, to take you out of that quality production that you are beginning to incorporate much more often. Be aware of those traps that can destroy your quality vocal production. This should be a “study effort” so you know where this is a personal trap for you.

• On the ending “ooo’s”, bass clef singers, project more fullness (think pipe organ). Use a full “ooo” sound rather than and “eww.

Angels We Have Heard on High

• Leads check your note in measure 32 and 38. There is a difference in the two passages.

Time After Time

• CHANGE: Basses will no longer drop the octave on the word “know” in measure 49.




• Remember the breath after the word “hearts” in measure 54, before “entwined, entwined.”

• The leads are doing a fantastic job in shaping the crescendo into “entwined - entwined.” Harmony parts need to match that intensity.

• In the last verse, beginning with “know what I know” we need to keep that in the key of E. This is the final time we say this passage in the song, and the ending drive will be diminished if we lose key here.

Mary, Did You Know

• Please take a look at this before Saturday and make sure you know your part. This song isn’t quite underneath us yet.

• We could use a little more bass in the opening chords.

• This song presents another example of moving notes and phrases, and the potential for more artistry, for Tenors and Baritones in the opening.

• CHANGE: The structure of this song for harmony parts is basically two bar passage, then a breath. We are changing that for at least the first two verses where we will make all two bar passages, four bar passages by eliminating a written breath for harmony parts. As an example, take a look at measures 11 -12. You’ll see a written eighth note breath for harmony parts...take that breath out, and connect the following phrase “save our sons and daughters.” This new structure will apply in each phrase in the first two verses.

• On that same phrase; “save our sons and daughters” we need better alignment on all of the “s” sounds in this phrase. The first “s” is right on the down beat, and the smallest sound you will make in that phrase is the final “s” on the release of “daughters.

Saturday! We are looking forward to a fantastic Saturday rehearsal this week. So that you are prepared, we plan to record “Silent Night (verses 2-3)”, “Angels We Have Heard on High”, “Mary, Did You Know” and “Do You Hear What I Hear.” Be sure you look over those 4 songs before Saturday. Again, we will plan on being on the risers at 9:00 in the auditorium, so plan to arrive at 8:45 (or earlier, if you can, to help set up.” Bring a lunch like last time. We’ll start off our rehearsal with work on our Convention set, “Eyes Medley” and “Time After Time.” See you there!

“Friends of the Heralds” (FOH) is a fund-raising program that is an important part of the Heralds yearly operating budget. Our mission is to preserve and further develop a cappella singing through musical excellence. FOH was established to help sustain Heralds of Harmony financial needs as we increase the number of singers on the risers and continue to improve our musical performance. We are a non-profit organization supported by our performance ticket sales, dues and grants. Under the direction of Tony De Rosa, we will continue to offer the best musical and entertainment experience for our audience. This year we placed in the top ten worldwide at the International Chorus Competition of the Barbershop Harmony Society. The Heralds are poised to continue this significant growth and progression.

FOH allows members, Alumni, as well as our friends, family, and barbershop fans, to assist us on our musical journey and support our financial needs. Your tax-deductible contribution is very much appreciated and will help us in this endeavor.
