CBR Update

The Fridsro Community Based Rehabilitation Project is entering it’s 11th year now and we are blessed to have served over 1 million people with disabilities in Sri Lanka and currently have a volunteer force of 14,000 people.

I was privilaged to be part of our launch into a new district, Nuwara Eliya with inclusive teacher training, peer group formation and handing out scholar-ships to students with special needs.

I also was able to visit a few families in the tea estate area who have children with special needs as an initial CBR visit. It was touching and heartbreaking to see how these families live, in such poverty and struggling to care for their kids in situations of societial stigma and with no resources availalbe to them.

The picture is from an initial Fridsro CBR field visit to this family of 5 children, 3 of whom have special needs. Our workers will help them with their edu-cation, obtaining services from the government and livelihood training. This is in a tea estate where their mother is a tea plucker and the kids stay home by themselves all day. Together we will change the perceptions of the special needs community and enable them to live lives of dignity and fulfillment.

The community of Vaddavan that Fridsro helped rebuild after the 2004 Tsunami is well and growing (see more info on our website) Although we had to leave before some of the buildings were completed due to the war Fridsro is committed to this community and we hope to begin rebuilding again shortly. Also due to the war many of the homes we built have been damaged by shelling and we urgently need your help to be able to repair these so that the people of Vaddavan who have suffered so much already can live in safe and comfortable houses.

On the East Coast the village of Thoppigala consists of 300families who are all currently returning from IDP camps and places where they fled during the war. We want to help this community to rebuild and to escape the bonds of the ex-treme poverty they live in, especially for the children in the Thoppigala school. From Mia Bastrup - Fridsro co-operates with disabled adults in Denmark - an alternative kind of charity

What has Fridsro and an institution with workshops for disabled people in Denmark in common? Actually nothing, except me. While I studied at the university in Denmark, I had a part-time job at Nyborgvaerkstedet, an institution for physical and mental, adult handicapped in a Danish town called Nyborg. Now years later I live in Sri Lanka, in Kandy. Not that I ever continued working with disabled people – quite opposite I ended up working with technology – but I never forgot the time there, their needs and optimism of life. One of my friends here showed me Fridsro’s shop, and I immediately feel in love with the fabrics and the idea that I was supporting a children’s home by buying the many different items made out of the fabrics. I’m not the selling kind of person, so suddenly I realised, that this institution in Denmark has a second-hand shop, and that to sell items from Fridsro would be a totally different way of doing charity. If the disabled adults could sell these things, it would mean money and employment for Fridsro, and it would mean experience of being able to help others, even though the disabled themselves need help in their daily life. A triple win situation; the homeless children getting money – the weavers getting jobs – the disabled making a difference for others. If you happen to come to Denmark, Nyborg, you can right now buy items and beautifully bedclothes from Fridsro. To cooperate with the people from Fridsro and Nyborgvaerkstedet has been nothing but fun and joy. Always willingness to find solutions, and very professionel and skilled staff.
