Blackletter - gothic texture to contemporary fraktur

I n s t r u c t i o n s a n d C l a s s I n f o r m a t i o n

In this workshop we will start from the historical background of Blackletter. on thefirst day, we will study the basic structure of Gothic Textura including consistencyof form and spacing. on day two, we will analyze samples of Fraktur to find therelation and difference between the forms of Textura and Fraktur. We will practicewith my Fraktur exemplar that is a combination of Friedrich neugebauer’s andClaude mediavilla's. Aiming to write beautiful strokes of Fraktur, we need to under-stand the changes in pen angle, pen manipulation and more. Those instructionswill be given with chisel nibs, wide marker and/or flat brush. on day three, we willstudy variations of Fraktur forms and will design a block of writing and make a finalproduct (logos, cards and/or broadside). once you go through this workshop, yourunderstanding of the form and techniques will enable you to write these forms satisfactorily, and to create your own style. All exercise sheets will be assembledas a book form.

CLASS LEVEL: All skill levels - basic calligraphy experience recommended

BIO:Carol DuBosch teaches calligraphy full-time in Portland, Oregon. She first encountered theedged pen and the Italic script at age 12 in 1957,and has followed the inky path faithfully by learn-ing, teaching, promoting and practicing the art ofcalligraphy. She continues to be challenged by anew script, technique or art material and alwaysdiscovers delightful surprises along the way. Shehas taught workshops throughout the country andat many International Calligraphy Conferences.Carol was Director of the 1987 and 1991 Interna-tional Calligraphy Conferences held in Portland, and Co-Directed Calligraphy Northwest in 2012. www.caroldubosch.com

This workshop focuses on learning this true American script. It was developed in the United States in the early 1800s by platt Roger Spencer. This script wasactually taught in the public school system in the late 1800s to the turn of thecentury. The beginning of the workshop is focused on the oblique pen holder, the nibs that can be used, paper and ink. This is combined with learning the basic lower case letters of this American script. Later we will focus on the Capitalletters and spacing of the lower case letters. A comprehensive workbook is partof the workshop for the students to continue to study this beautiful script.

CLASS LEVEL: Having pointed pen experience is good but not required. Whenone on one instruction is provided, that is when I will tailor the instruction to thestudent’s level – assisting the inexperienced but challenging the experienced students. All levels welcome.

nEULAnD is the husky typeface designed by German calligrapher, Rudolph Koch, in the1920’s. Contemporary lettering artists use these capital letters in a wide variety of interest-ing ways to create broadsides, posters, cards or books. This class will explore nEULAnDletters in two forms. First, the typeface letters will be drawn, cut, embossed, layered, andoutlined. With the understanding of the letter shapes that is gained by drawing, we will move on to work with a variation of nEULAnD to be written with a broad edged pen andbalsa pens we make in class. The nEULAnD variation letters are perfect forms to write with a flat brush and we will work on paper, fabric and wood. There are so many creativeand expressive ways to use nEULAnD, and you will learn valuable techniques and tricks to use in your personal work as you work and play with this amazingly versatile script. Each student will compile samples of their nEULAnD exercises and techniques for futurereference.

batik papers for books and cards

carol pallesen 5.

Create beautiful books and cards using the Javanese tradition of batik. With tjanting tools in hand, participants will dip intomelted wax and draw lines, shapes, and letters on papers whichwill later be brightly painted with dyes. Wax will be ironed out,and the papers are then ready for measuring, cutting, and folding into unique projects. Adding words comes next with theintroduction and practice of a monoline alphabet style. You willbe delighted with the process and your artworks!

weaving calligraphy

marina soria8.

In the words of the famous Argentine historian, Ruth Corcuera, “textile artwill be the means to tell us through colors and designs that the world canbe read through symbols, as in a written text. In the great American cul-tures, these symbols were a kind of lingua Franca and textiles a major artwith many roles, among them to express that where words did not suffice.”Inspired in traditional textiles we will try to rescue their designs, theirgraphics and their color palettes. We will search for color scheme, predominant and complementary colors and accents. We will analyze their designs, the character of the line and drawings to mingle and blend calligraphy with the textile arts. It’s my intention to share with you my experimentations and findings, and hope you will find new solutionsto your calligraphic compositions in this new field. Let's start weavingwords!

CLASS LEVEL: In this class we will be painting and writing to create patterns and textures. Therefore a knowledge of the use of the brushand/or calligraphic tools is helpful. But even non-calligraphers can createwonderful art. So all levels come with an adventurous spirit.

BIO:Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Marina has degrees in Fine Arts and GraphicDesign. She has attended five International Calligraphy Conferences in the USA.In 1997 she founded “Calígrafos de la Cruz del Sur,” the first Calligraphic Guild inSouth America. In 2013, her work was extensively featured in Letter Arts Review:26:3. At present she works as an experimental calligrapher and a graphic artist, and continues to teach in her own studio and abroad. Her main interest is to min-gle and blend diverse disciplines: art, textile art, graphic design, sumi-e and callig-raphy to challenge the limits of conceptual art and technique.

Explore rewarding new techniques that combine artwith words. Working on small format paper, we combine drawing materials, paint and various resistswith handwriting, calligraphy and self-crafted letter-forms to create richly layered pieces that have a striking, print-like quality. All techniques link togetherallowing endless opportunity for individual expres-sion. You will complete this class with fresh ideas, heightened enthusiasm, and a hand-constructed portfolio of your work.

CLASS LEVEL: my class does not require any special skills other than the ability to use an exactoknife. Some familiarity with simple brush letteringwould be useful but is not essential. All levels are welcome, from those who have never taken an artclass to the experienced. These are user friendlyprojects, yet everyone will be challenged.

BIO:Rebecca Wild is a Pacific Northwest artist and calligrapher from theOlympic Peninsula of Washington. You will be thrilled with the beauty of dancing on theedges of the brush! The subtle lines and soft touches of the brush willchange your view of how calligraphy exercises should be - light and soft.

This course is about practicing large-scale calligraphy using alphabetsthat you are already familiar with. It requires total focus, self confidenceand patience. of course, I will prepare some special alphabets for youtoo. As we go larger and larger, the proportions of the negative spacebetween and within letters become important. Further we will work onwall design ideas and make smaller sketches for a final project that couldbe realized on your mural space back at your home. We will also discussthe use of appropriate colour in indoor spaces.
