SPORTS DAY On Thursday 4th of July, we were blessed with great weather and the question
everyone was wondering was if any house could claw back the commanding lead
that Rocket House had built up during athletics lessons this term.
Period 1 and Period 2 saw the winners of the field events as well as the 800m and
1500m winners come down and get their medals, whilst the rest of their form groups
made the many banners and signs of House support for the afternoon.
Period 3 saw the Tug of War competition start and as with most years, it was eagerly
anticipated and didn’t disappoint. All houses competed well and added valuable
points to their House totals.
In the afternoon, the sprint events began. Rocket House were still hanging onto their
lead but other Houses were catching them with Sans Pareil making the biggest
impact. Some great performances from Sans Pareil saw school records broken and
Rocket House members sweating on their lead.
In particular, Year 7 Sans Pareil girls were performing extremely well with Kosy Nwanya,
Olivia Pile and Emily Bellard breaking school records in the 100m, 200m and 300m
respectively.
When the results were counted, Rocket House just managed to hold onto their lead
finishing first with Sans Pareil second, Stephenson third and Perseverance finishing
fourth.
Can I say well done to every member of every House who not only competed on the
day in the track events and the Tug of War but to those who worked so hard in lessons
to make this year’s Sports Day a spectacular event and gain valuable points for
respective Houses.
We already can’t wait for next year!
Mr Rachi, Teacher of PE.

ENGLISH SCHOOLS’ ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS This weekend, two Rainhill students have the honour of competing for Merseyside in
the English Schools’ Athletics Championships.
The Merseyside squad is made up of 40 athletes and to have two boys in the squad is
a massive achievement for themselves, their families and our school.
Charlie Roberts (11G) is competing in the 800m and after recently running another
personal best of 1:54.13, Charlie is going in to the championships in great form.
As is Luka Sidebotham (9A). Luka is coming off the back of double town titles at St
Helens Town Sports on Tuesday in the 100m and the 400m. Luka is also in great form
and in the process of winning his two town titles, broke the St Helens Town record in
the 100m, which has stood since 2007, clocking a time of 11.26s.
Everyone at the school wishes the boys the very best of luck. We hope we are
reporting on some national medals making their way back to Rainhill in the coming
week.
All the best lads!
Mr Rachi, Teacher of PE.
Luka Sidebotham (9A)
Charlie Roberts (11G)

PARENT AND STUDENT ARTS WORKSHOPS Over the past two weeks, we have held a number of Parent & Student Art Workshops
with some very creative outcomes.
The workshops were a lovely opportunity for students and parents to work together to
create their own personalised pottery mug. Parents also had the opportunity to speak
to Year Progress Leaders and Year Student Managers along with Art staff.
The mugs are just having their final glaze before the students will be able to collect
them to take home on Monday 15th July.
It was a pleasure to see the pride and enjoyment the students and parents had in the
creation of their artistic works.
We will be holding further parent workshops during the coming weeks and next school
year.
Mrs Aylward, Assistant Headteacher.

YEAR 10 TASTE OF SIXTH FORM DAY On Thursday 27th June, Year 10 pupils spent a day as a Sixth Former at Rainhill Sixth
Form Centre, wearing their own clothes and using the Sixth Form facilities. Some pupils
even got to experience a Criminology Seminar as a different way of learning that we
offer in our Sixth Form experiences.
Students got to choose from our subjects at Sixth Form to have a taste of what
pathway that subject can support them with including:
What skills do subjects develop?
What careers can lead from subjects?
What will they need to do after these subjects to get to careers, further
education/qualifications
What subjects go well with these subject?
An idea of what the course will contain
Our Year 10 pupils showed a real commitment to the day and feedback from staff
and pupils was very positive.
Next steps in the Autumn term will involve the release of our new 2020 Prospectus, The
Sixth Form Open Evening and another taster day where students can experience
lessons in their chosen subjects. We will support them every step of the way through
Year 11 and make sure they are working towards their vision for their future.
Mr Hemsley, Director of Sixth Form.
YEAR 10 GEOGRAPHY FIELDWORK TRIPS On Monday 24th, Wednesday 26th and Friday
28th June, Year 10 geographers enjoyed three
days out of school on their fieldwork trip to
Southport and Ainsdale.
The trip enabled pupils to collect data which
will go towards their final GCSE grade.
The aim of the day was to allow pupils first hand
experience of data collection. We spent a
couple of hours in Southport where the
students spent time investigating whether or
not Southport has benefited from government
investment and if this has attracted more
people to the town. We then spent the same
amount of time studying the sand dunes at
Ainsdale, measuring the changes to the dune.
The students fully enjoyed the day and were
well behaved.
Mrs Parkinson, Head of Humanities.
